Sister’s Fiancé’s $50K Ring Hoax Exposed By Woman And Jeweler Wife, Engagement Called Off
It’s a perfect moment, the moon is bright, and a romantic song plays in the background. Then you see the person you love get down on their knees, pop out a diamond-studded ring, and ask you The Question. Sounds enchanting, right? But what happens when you realize that the supposedly expensive ring is a cheap one?
In this article, Redditor Cultural-Counter5605 got to know from her jeweler wife that the ring her sister’s fiancé claimed to be worth $50k was actually $30. She told this to her sister, who called off the engagement, while their family blamed the woman for sabotaging her relationship.

In this story, the original poster (OP) talked about a family conflict that she got stuck in. She gives a little background that she’s 26 and her wife Katie is also the same age. She has a younger sister Lydia, who is 22, while her fiancé Seth is 24. And it was just a month after they got engaged when things went completely downhill.
Seth came from a well-to-do family with both parents working in the business sector. He was also earning quite a decent amount and lived a lavish lifestyle. So, naturally, as anyone would expect, he produced a super expensive ring when he proposed to Lydia. And the happy couple constantly kept bragging about this costly ring. Seth even claimed that it was worth $50k.
One day, Lydia had a photoshoot planned, so she went to OP’s wife Katie, who was a seasoned jeweler, and asked her to clean and polish the ring. Katie agreed to the favor and what she found out from it was the whole cause of the conflict. She went to the poster and told her that this supposedly expensive ring was made of cheap material and only worth $30.
The couple discussed things and decided that it would be better if the poster told Lydia about it. So, she sat down with her sister and gently expressed that Katie had done a thorough check and found out that the ring was indeed very cheap. Lydia was stunned by this and said that Seth must’ve been scammed by the seller, and it was only natural for her to think so as he came from a decent background.
However, when she spoke to Seth about it, he confessed that the ring was actually cheap and he was hoping that Lydia wouldn’t find out about it. That must’ve broken her heart. She was so upset with him that she called off the engagement and went to live with a friend. But she bore no ill will towards her sister or her wife. It was just Seth that she was mad at.
But the family was not thinking along the same lines as Lydia. The parents, especially, were extremely angry with OP and her wife, even accusing them of “sabotaging her sister’s relationship”. They also said that the couple should’ve minded their own business and there was unnecessary pressure on men to spend a lot of money on rings. The parents even called them “selfish” and there was a lot of extended family who also thought of them as the bad guys for doing what they did.
Confused with her actions, the woman took to Reddit and asked for the netizens’ thoughts on the matter.

Well, the Redditors reached to her rescue and told her that she was not in the wrong. They all said that the only person to blame for the whole drama was Seth alone for lying about the cost of the ring. As per Mirror UK, “One in three men lie about the price of their fiancée’s engagement ring.” The fact that so many people lie about this makes us wonder about the person, don’t you think so?
And even the netizens pointed out that he repeatedly lied about something that he didn’t have to. And the lie he told was an incredibly huge amount. There’s a giant difference between $30 And $50K, so it does sound strange. Given his good financial situation, they wondered about his strange actions. Verywell Mind states, “People lie to their partners to make themselves look good or more successful than they really are.” But she was already ready to commit to him, so his lying just messed up things.
Folks online also started questioning his character and his honor for breaking his fiancée’s trust. “Deception includes manipulating information through emphasis or exaggeration. Secrets and lies end relationships,” says Psychology Today (PT). And it seems that’s exactly what happened in this story.
PT has also mentioned, “The victims of deception may begin to doubt themselves, and their self-esteem may suffer. Often, they need counseling to recover from the loss of trust and to raise their self-esteem.” It looks like the poster’s sister might have a tough time as her trust has been broken by that lie. And the fact that she called off the engagement and left her fiancé to live with a friend just reflects her pain because of him.
The peeps also called out the parents for being rude to OP and her wife. They said that the parents should be grateful that the couple caught his lie as he might lie about something else in the future after their marriage. Some even applauded the poster for taking that step and protecting her sister. They said that only Lydia’s opinion mattered and as she was not mad at her sister, it was all fine.

You have got to be kidding me? So your family wants your sister to marry a proven liar??? Who in the wide world would want that for their child? My guess is that your family, in some way or other, hoped to gain some advantage from this marriage or perhaps they are miffed because they looked forward to a free lavish meal.

I used to work at a jewellery company - cubic zirconia and silver looked beautiful. And so does Swarovski Crystal. But why lie? Is he saying that she is worth so little to him that he doesn’t want to spend any money on her? It’s a ring that she’ll hopefully be wearing for the rest of her life. I can understand if he’d said that he didn’t like diamonds and bought her something else but to lie is such a crappy thing to do.

There's a lot of space between a 30 bucks ring and a 50k one. There was no need to be THIS cheap, and certainly no need to overstate by this much - let alone brag on and on about it. I wouldn't mind a cheap ring (provided it looks nice), and as a gift I wouldn't want to know the cost anyway. The issue is the attitude behind it: lying for no good reason, and being stupid about it to boot. Yuck!

I agree it's about the lie. It's also about who Seth is as a person, he belittled his finance with that lie, she is humiliated that he felt she was so easily deceived and it was no problem for him to deceive her. She faced being laughed at behind her back by anybody with a decent eye for quality stones and metals and he was basically laughing behind her back too if you really think about it. He is a horrible man and her parents are foolish to think this is what their daughter deserves.

For the comment that said I am no jeweler but I can tell the difference between a 30 dollar and a 50k ring. Nope, you can't. Some modern current jewelry/accessories are nearly impossible to tell. My mom has lately been into buying stainless steel jewelry that looks indistinguishable from gold, but it's for a fraction of the price. These things look incredible, very hard to tell they are not actual gold.

To the person who said "Can'T yoU TeLl the DiFFerenCe BetWEen ...blah blah blah" Dude - I'm wearing a pair of rings that cost $7 and $5 respectively from Temu - silver and cubic zirconia. With the way I've styled them together, a colleague who knows her sh!t, and whom I told the rings were silver and CZ, still thought it was one ring that cost a couple hundred dollars. So, no - not everyone can tell the difference.

They needed to tell her because if she ever got it cleaned out fixed by someone else she'd surely find out then, and the fiance could then claim that they stole the stone or replaced the ring when it was cleaned. Even if he didn't get away with another lie then they'd have to explain to the sister why they never said anything. Always best to be honest up front.

For the people who say it is obvious to the untrained eye the difference between a $30 and $50K ring, not always at first. The cheap rings get a few quick beauty treatments, like little sparkle enhancing coats, more or less akin to the top coat on a manicure. But within a few weeks, those things wear off, the metal starts to dull and tarnish and then the stones chip, scratch, and pop out. Seth's lie had a limited life span.

Not only did he lie, but he must not think very highly of her. Does he think she's stupid? Since he's bragged about the ring, someone, at some point, will tell him to get it insured which requires an appraisal. I would not want a partner who disrespects me lies to me, and brags about money he spends on anything. Clearly, he has issues that cannot be limited to this ring. OP's sister is lucky to find out who he is before she married him

first, i don't understand why men/women think that an engagement/wedding ring has to be expensive. the cost of the ring should not ever be a measure of love. that said, the fact that seth felt that he has to lie about the cost of the ring shows that he is willing to lie about something that should not be anything to lie about. when my ex proposed he didn't have a ring because he wanted me to pick out something that i liked. after looking at many settings i finally confessed i didn't like the flashy diamonds but i would let him know if i did see something i liked. a few weeks before the wedding i took him to a store where i saw what i wanted: a thrift shop that had antiques jewelry. ended up with small band that had alternating blue sapphires/diamonds w/ light scrolling on band. the cost was much much less than a new set & i loved it.

I agree that it's stupid that men are expected to pay s much for a ring. But my father gave my mother an engagement ring that he designed, and made (with help). The material would probably cost less than $50 today. Silver and onyx. To her it has always been priceless, and she loved it the moment she saw it. men don't need to spend a lot of money on a ring, and there doesn't even need to be a ring. However, whatever people exchange to symbolize their commitment needs to be something that demonstrates care and love.

NTA. Lydia was bound to find out about the ring sooner or later, and not in a good way. My ex pulled the exact same thing on me. I found out about the cheap ring after he walked away and I gave the ring away. If Seth could lie about the value of an important piece of jewelry, what's to stop him from lying about credit card debt, his job, or an ex he claims is "just a friend"? Glad Lydia set THAT trash can out at the curbside. Your family, however, are full of 🐎💩.
