Woman Calls Out Clothing Brands For Sexist Care Tags, And Here Are 10 Of The Most Upsetting Ones
Interview With AuthorDespite our society actively educating people on practising a safe environment for every human being – many social issues require an unbelievable amount of hard work in order to at least be heard by some.
People who grew up in an “old-fashioned” upbringing tend to need an absurd amount of everyday learning that would ultimately lead them into understanding how discriminating against other folks is foolish, at the very least. Some individuals carry on believing their unhealthy opinions even with all the right-minded morals our community strives to preach – however, it’s all a matter of time.
Things like sexism and racism remain to be particularly significant in this day and age, as a countless amount of people still get harassed on the basis of their race and gender. Sometimes it feels like certain groups of people are simply hating as if it’s an ordinary everyday type of need.
Many fail to recognize how casual the discrimination can be – for instance, let’s look at this viral TikTok that made many people rush to check the care tags on their clothes.

This TikToker got over 920K views on a video after exposing clothing brands for their discriminative care tags

Millie Lusson, a Canadian hobby enthusiast and history lover, made a TikTok video demonstrating how a bunch of clothing brands appear to be using discriminatory language in their instruction labels.
The video sparked a fiery debate amongst online users and received nearly 3200 comments where people couldn’t comprehend that things like this still happen in this day and age.

Bored Panda has reached out to Millie in order to find out about her personal beliefs regarding this serious matter.
The woman is extremely passionate about this topic and revealed that we as a society should be past this type of “humor” by now. She feels that putting jokes on labels is a great idea, but strongly encourages companies to be self aware and make them funny without using misogyny, sexism, etc.

We asked Lusson about what she thinks would be the best “remedy” for organizations or people in general that still discriminate against folks based on their gender, to which she replied:
“I think it starts with education. It takes a lot of work, but learning about diversity, sexuality, and gender identity, and the history and evolution of systems of oppression, is important and necessary work for everyone to take on. And along with that, talking about it with friends, family, and colleagues is a big part of it. It will probably be uncomfortable, but people need to learn to sit in discomfort and grow from it rather than avoid it.”

Millie also added: “casual misogyny and sexism are very problematic, they seep into the vernacular, and with that there is a danger that they become the norm. Being under the guise of ‘jokes’ does not excuse them and we should not let them slide because of that. Calling it out is a simple good thing that anyone can do”.

To a certain extent, social media can be a true blessing. People are able to voice their concerns and actually be heard by the majority. Sadly, sometimes, just educating people doesn’t perform as well as we would like to – hence why calling out involved individuals and literally pointing at their mistakes works wonders.

Sexism will most likely continue to happen as double standards are extremely embedded in our culture. After all, inequality starts in our childhood when parents casually say things like “but you’re a girl,” implying that a woman is not allowed to do whatever she wants to do simply because of her gender. It’s our job to continue enlightening uneducated people even if it seems that fighting for an ethical environment will never stop.

Share on FacebookI've noticed that people will make jokes about seriously bad behave or situations. Then as soon as you call it out you're immediately told it's a joke or to lighten up and chill. People are twisting blatant hatefulness, sexism, and any other bad thing into a joke. But there is no joke that is just how they feel and think. What do you call that? When people use a joke to mask how awful they really are. I see it so much on social media and it's messed up how some people do that. Does anyone else know what I'm talking about? I can't be the only one who notices this.
I know what you're talking about. Ive had someone ( or people over the years) criticize something about me and when I call them on it, tell me they were just kidding. The truth is when I called them on whatever it was, they didn't have the backbone to stand up for what they said. My word for it is hypocrite.
Load More Replies...Apparently, it is "cool" to not have a clue how to wash laundry and be a nitwit who depends on the knowledge of others.
Well in the current trajectory of society, ( dont go to the movies stay home and stream it, dont go get dinner door dash it, dont drive a car uber instead etc) we are indeed raising a bunch of folks that will be hard put to fend for themselves in the most basic scenarios. So i corddially invite you to invest in my new start up 'Rent a mom' where a real life mom will come to your home and do your laundry for you. May as well make parenting a subscription based service now too right?
Load More Replies...It's amazingly sexist against men, who are put down as incompetent idiots. However, I'm sure that's not the intended slant of this piece.
I'm also sure that's not the intended slant of the labels.
Load More Replies...Sorry, but my sons knew how to use the washing machine and fold their own laundry since they were 4 y.o. Tried to help even before that. If you're a grown man and need a woman for this, you're practically an amoeba.
As a kid that age, I was allowed to wash dishes and cut vegetables with a sharp knife. I don't know if the result was presentable :-)
Load More Replies...The one joke label I saw that made me laugh was a Top Gear T-Shirt and it said: Tested on animals. They looked awesome!
And when you give it to your Mom, wife, girlfriend, don't be surprised if she puts it on a 90 degree wash with her red socks!!!!
I've never seen this kind of thing. Don't these companies know that moms, girlfriends and wives buy more of these clothes than males do?
I think those are probably brands that make clothing specifically for men and most women who know how to do laundry wouldn't even look this far down the label, because we all know at what temperature to wash a pair of jeans.
Load More Replies...If it's a joke, you should be able to explain what makes it funny. This is just encouraging men to be incompetant and misogynist, and disguising it with humor. You give me laundry to do, it's either going in with mine, on the 40 degree standard cycle, or it's sitting at the bottom of the dirty laundry basket till the end of time. You want something handwashed, watch a youtube video and figure it out.
Wowwww. I (perhaps naively) hope that some of these came about from non-English speakers blindly copying other care tag text. But seriously, the idea that men can't figure out simple household tasks and they're exclusively women's domain is insulting to everyone. Besides---don't tell her--- but my mother should not be trusted to launder anything you care about. She puts everything in the dryer on high!
I can’t even fathom getting mad over a cloth tag 😂 I have better things to do and worry about
I've seen tags that say "if you don't know what these symbols mean then ask your mom, she'll explain." Or something close to that, I no longer own the shirt. I thought it was pretty funny. I showed it to her and she laughed and said she has no idea what they mean.
Given that mothers are, on average, de facto the most knowledgeable about such things, I agree that's fine.
Load More Replies...Sexist both ways, suggesting that it's a woman's job to do the laundry, but equally suggesting that men are incapable of it
It must be a USA-thing, I never ever saw this kind of labels in Europe-sold clothes in any of the countries. Some are really terrible, some one kinda hilarious and kinda true as better-don't-wash-a-feine-material-clothing-if-you-have-no-clue. True, it's not gender-related.
No.1 way to lose clientele. Also who wants to read that? Just trying to wear a clean shirt here man
All I see is manufacturers pointing out that men supposedly aren't capable of doing their own laundry. None of it is clothes sold in the US, as far as I know (nor care---I just make sure it's washable, and never read the label again), but it's hardly "offensive." Seems as if just this one particular female has issues and "has to" bring them to the attention of an otherwise "who cares?!" world.
Almost all of these brands are skating brands like ripndip and enjoi
Here's one that Bored Panda wrote https://www.boredpanda.com/funny-product-instructions/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=organic
The men that designed these labels evidently 1) Still live with their mothers 2) Have never had the pleasure of speaking to a female apart from their mothers 3) Are probably playing Fortnite right now, getting too passionate about losing against 13 yr olds.
Oh my god its just a joke you delicate snowflakes, dont cry, ok? :D And most important thing - its joke against men, because by the joke men cant do laundry, so it sais ,,leave it be you dumbass, your mom/wife will know what to do with it." Are you really so insecure and lacking in self-confidence that even a simple joke makes you angry?
This appears to be TEN different companies ALL using the SAME joke. They're seeking the sort of outrage supplied here; how about trash these companies for being mindless drones? So dependent on others, they can't even come up with a joke on their own?
The last thing I would do is giving my laundry to my (clueless) wife, 🤣 Although I can somehow get the humor, the "It's her job" definitely is over the line.
Honestly, why is everyone so pissed off.. My husband cannot clean the house half as well or efficiently as I can. Whatever he tries to do in the house is awkward to him, wholehearted and all... And I know I cannot do his job, I do not have the strength... We are made different for very good reasons .... Genetic women bear children and have a more natural tendency with them... Why allow yourself to feel less for having natural tendencies. ... And I am not referring to social / cultural expectations... But true natural gender tendancies
Is this real? It can't be. Not in Europe it would never get sewn in to a washing tag, never.
I'll believe you that these are not just jokes and are sexist and a serious issue if you ladies will admit that joking that dads are barely able to raise their own children and that they are just bumbling idiots babysitting while mom is busy is also sexist and should be stopped. Literally every show on TV, and most movies, perpetuate the stereotype that men are stupid man babies incapable of caring for a child, or a pedophile, if that can just be a "funny joke", so can "give it to your mom", or you can stop your crap too.
Wouldn't it be great if the clothing tags treated ALL people as if they were morons, and not just men/boys?
Yeah, ridiculous..but I'm not going to waste time being upset by a tag. If I got upset by every written word, I'd never be happy. Act how you deem appropriate and demand it from others. All you can do!
It's called "Humor"...try it, you might like it!! People who think that this tag is SERIOUS need help...right away.....
Don't take this the wrong way but the people who should be offended are the ones buying these clothes. The tags are essentially calling them idiots who can't follow simple directions and need someone to explain how to do something as simple as laundry. That being said, when it comes to being offended by misogyny, this kind of thing isn't worth the effort. There are FAR more pressing issues to be addressed when it comes to the treatment of women. Let's go after the laundry tags after we tackle women's rights, the wage gap, reproductive freedom, the blatant bias against women in medical research and healthcare in general, unfair hiring practices in which women are consistently asked if they have or want children, sexual harassment, assault, domestic violence....the list is ridiculously long and this seems like it should be the least of our worries.
Women do laundry?? My wife and daughters never told me that! Man, do I feel dumb! I guess 71 isn't too old to learn something new!
It's illegal in EU. Companies shall give you all your money back or they will be sued... in EU there are orginizations that sue them.
what i really think is sad about this is how yes there taking the piss out of women and telling a man he should let a woman do it because its her job, but no one is noticing how its been horrible against men telling them they cant do it, there too stupid to do it - if i was a man and my shirt or what ever said this i would myself be offended, after i had finished laughing at how Ludacris this actually is
It's sexist against men, so if you are a man you can't do laundry?? So you need a woman to do any of simplest things in your life because you are as dumb an useless you can't??
wow....that's not angering at all! Now I know what brands to never buy. How disgustingly sexist, hope they enjoy losing money and customers
They'll most likely gain customers. It's not like you're their demographic anyway
Load More Replies...You mean you don't get that it's a joke? Too bad they didn't show all the other labels that have funny instructions and just picked the about women. Why is everyone so eager to get angry and just fly off?
I know someone who works for a clothier that does this. Their intended clientele are millennials, and they don't mince words about believing that the younger generations are home illiterate, inept, and feel entitled to have others do their bidding, cleaning, everything else. The few labels that are in the post are a drop in the pond. This WILL become more mainstream in marketing!
Yeah... but it's boomers who are the real "snowflakes", right? After reading comments to this, I have to say apparently not. Never seen so man,y so lacking a sense of humor. I'm male. Done laundry since a teenager... and I find these very funny.
Well duh, you’re just a dumb dude living in your misogyny and not really giving a shît how dumb you look or how anyone else feels about it. Of course it wouldn’t bother you. You’re exactly who we are clowning.
Load More Replies.....and then there's me, thinking that it was intended to put men down as helpless and stupid. Sheesh.
If your heart goes out to people in sweat shops then buy clothing that wasn't amde in sweat shops. I for one won't buy clothes from brands who think "Give it your mom." is a funny joke.
Load More Replies...Ah bless William, why don't you go do my freaking wash then? Or is that a tough concept for you?
Load More Replies...It's OK to find them funny, but don't forget they're just as sexist towards men (portraying them as incompetent idiots) as they are towards women (echoing discriminatory gender roles).
Load More Replies...In *your* relationship, it's your job to do the laundry. But that's not what the tag says, is it? It doesn't say, "Linny H's Husband: Give this laundry to Linny H; it's her job." What does it actually say? And what does that imply? And why oh why might some women (who are not you) find that annoying? I wonder
Load More Replies...Just because it's a joke, doesn't mean it's a good joke. It's a very stupid joke that annoys a lot of people, because it is word-for-word a copy of what some people say when they are *not* joking. I really hope you can wrap your head around that? Try really really hard and ponder this concept, and maybe your brain will squeeze out something of substance
Load More Replies...Wtf are you talking about?
