Getting a little help from Grandma sounds lovely until Grandma decides she has been promoted to co-parent. Grandparents may get away with a little extra spoiling, but there is a big difference between giving a grandchild an extra cookie and openly contradicting Mom in front of the child.

That distinction is at the heart of this family conflict. A 33-year-old mother was already struggling with her controlling mother-in-law, but things became much harder when her husband left for a work trip, and the mother-in-law allegedly began overriding her parenting decisions.

At the end of the day, even the most well-meaning grandparents can cross a line when spoiling grandkids turns into undermining the parents

Parent-grandparent disagreements are actually pretty common. The Bump reports that among parents whose children regularly or occasionally saw a grandparent, 43% had asked a grandparent to change their behavior to match the parent’s rules. About 37% reported minor disagreements over parenting choices, while 6% described the disagreements as major.

The problem becomes more serious when grandparents do not simply have different opinions but actively undermine the rules parents have established. Parenting Mentor notes that children can quickly learn to use conflicting adults to their advantage when one relative says yes after a parent has already said no. That can turn an innocent attempt to spoil a grandchild into a much bigger power struggle over who actually gets to make decisions.

They also note the difference between grandparents having their own traditions and disregarding the parents’ boundaries in the parents’ home. Grandparents are to follow the parents’ instructions when caring for grandchildren, while acknowledging that some families have different rules at “Grandma and Grandpa’s house”.

The key is that everyone understands which rules are non-negotiable and that grandparents don’t use exceptions to undermine the parents. This is because repeatedly contradicting a parent also puts the child in an awkward position. Rather than simply enjoying time with the grandparent, the child may learn that there is a secret route around the parents’ rules.

Tandem Psychology describes this as a form of triangulation, where the grandparent’s indulgence effectively pits the child against the parent and can make the parent feel undermined or betrayed. That may help explain why something as small as allowing a toy at the dinner table can become much bigger than the toy itself.

If the same pattern includes sweets, activities, bedtime, or other household rules, each individual disagreement can feel like another challenge to parental authority. Family Rhythms’s guidance on grandparent relationships similarly argues that supporting the parent’s authority in front of children helps preserve trust between generations.

The spouse caught between an unhappy parent and an unhappy partner can face a particularly difficult balancing act. Trying to “keep the peace” may seem like the easiest solution in the moment, but it can also leave the parent whose rules are being challenged feeling as though they are expected to absorb the conflict.

And that is why clear boundaries and communication are very important because unresolved conflict can have consequences for children caught in the middle. When boundaries keep being ignored, reducing contact can become a consequence rather than the original goal. What do you think about this situation? Should grandparents always follow the parents’ rules, even when they strongly disagree with them? We would love to hear from you!

Netizens largely felt the mother-in-law was the one who crossed the line first, arguing that this was about much more than letting a toddler play with a toy during dinner
