Is it a particularly American, or just a modern thing to call a crotchet a "quarter note"? I mean, I worked it out, but I learned the proper words for the notes at school and have always used them.
Yes, it's the name of the note in American English. Further on they go "eighth" for the quaver, "sixteenth" for the semiquaver, "thirty-second" for the demisemiquaver, and so on.
