The main purpose of a sign is to communicate a message or convey information. Most are useful. But others are just plain stupid. Then there are super funny signs. And those that make no sense at all. But have you ever come across a sign that gave you goosebumps? And not in a good way.

"For More Information On Lung Cancer, Keep Smoking."
I think it's a good deterrent from starting smoking, but once folks are addicted, they won't care. There are countries where they show pictures of people actually dying on cigarette packages and folks still buy them.

Load More Replies...This should be at any path up any mountain. So many people don't understand that slippers aren't meant for hiking and then are surprised when they need rescuing.
Probably not, as Mount Everest has become more of a kick for the wealthy. You can have some sherpas carry all of your luggage there, and, if you pay extra, probably carry you up there, too. Which does not make it safe, there are enough fatalities. But one would think that the dead bodys littering the way there (it is too dangerous to recover them, so they keep lying along the way, sometimes serving as landmarks) would be enough of a waring.

There's a scary sign at the top of the Bright Angel Trail, that starts from the south rim of the Grand Canyon. It shows pictures of people who've died of dehydration and heat stroke because they tried to hike the trail in the summer, when temperatures are well over 100 degrees F. The warnings are very explicit.
Even so, I bet you anything several totally unqualified and ill equipped idiots attempt to climb these peaks every year...
Don’t Forget Your Life Jacket
Life jackets don't require intelligence to operate; they were probably unlucky. I'd say 146 of those people were definitely idiots, though.
Load More Replies...Fear is a necessary human emotion. It alerts us to possible trouble so that we can react, which in turn helps us survive potentially deadly situations. When encountering danger, fear triggers us into fight-or-flight mode. We can either choose to go up against the perceived threat, or we can run away as fast as possible.
But there is another response… Freeze. When something just stops us in our tracks, and we make like Elsa in Frozen. Some of the signs pictured here have elicited that very response from the people who encountered them. Until they became unstuck enough to take a photograph and share it with the r/ScarySigns community.

There are many "Tsunami Stones" all over Japan, some are centuries old. This particular stone, from what I was able to find out, is in Aneyoshi, a small village on Japan’s northeastern coast. It was erected in 1896.

If fear is a negative emotion and a state that many of us don't necessarily like being in, why do we enjoy watching horror movies, or scrolling through photos of terrifying signs? According to experts, it has something to do with the chemicals our body releases after being scared.
Turn Back Now!
There may be one just outside the frame of this picture. Besides, people are stupid enough that it's pretty likely someone will think they "know better" and go around/move the barrier, so putting up the sign is just an additional precaution. ( Not that the ones dumb enough to go past the barrier will read the sign, either. )

Seems obvious, but the last time we were on the Big Island during an eruption, a guide at the volcano told us every year someone touches the lava with their foot... only to pull their leg back and find that their foot is gone.
When it comes to people in general, there is no such thing as "obvious". But putting up signs does at least reduce the risk of ligitation.
Load More Replies...I visited the Big Island in1994. Kilauea had erupted the week before, so I got to walk on still warm, solidified lava. The ranger had to go out and chase a guy for being beyond the safe zone. When lava cools (obviously) the top cools first and forms a thin crust that looks like solid lava, but when you step on it you break through and vaporize.

Margee Kerr has dedicated her career to learning as much about fear as she can. She’s a sociologist and the author of SCREAM: Chilling Adventures in the Science of Fear. She says fear floods our bodies with "feel-good" hormones. "Our arousal system is activated and triggers a cascade of 'feel good' neurotransmitters and hormones like endorphins, dopamine, serotonin, and adrenaline that influence our brains and our bodies," Kerr told The Huffington Post.
Highway 16, Canada. Over 80+ Confirmed Murders. Whose Got More Insight To This?
Google MMIW and Highway of Tears.. its all there and horrific that the RCMP willingly ignore when a certain group of women keep going missing
No More Stolen Sisters - google it. It’s bad enough that so many (indigenous) women go missing, but the lack of investigation is horrifying. What surprised me is Canada is one of the worst about ignoring the disappearance of women -
Load More Replies...As I understand it, most of the victims were First Nations women. :( [Edited]
First Nations women, not Native American (as they are Canadian).
Load More Replies...All over North America Indigenous women are trafficked, murdered and disappeared and law enforcement considers the investigation of these crimes to be low priority.
There is a book titled Highway of Tears: a true story of racism, indifference and the pursuit of justice for missing and murdered indigenous women by Jessica McDiarmid that goes in depth about it.
This is horrible, but the missing comma on this sign is really bugging me. Because there is no comma between "GIRLS" and "DON'T" it is a statement that hitchhikers on the highway of tears are not girls, instead of an instruction to girls that they should not hitchhike there.
Look, the sign was sponsored by the families of victims, not the local pedants society. If it makes you pay more attention to it, good.

Inside The Boy’s Bathroom At School
This didn't make any sense to me because I thought it had something to do with Corona. I'm from the Netherlands and school shootings never crossed my mind.
I was half-way in reading, when it occured me, that's from USA and it's about school shootings, not Covid.
Load More Replies...How very... American of you... There is only one single country where shool shootings are a significant problem. The overwhelming mayority of Americans even support rigorous gun control (source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_opinion_on_gun_control_in_the_United_States#:~:text=75%25%20of%20American%20adults%20supported,of%20error%20of%20%2B%2F%2D%204%25.), yet no politician dares to address this, as too much lobby money is involved. Even Fox News 2019 polls showed a 90% support for universal background checks, and 67% favored banning assault weapons.
You know, this just makes me think of horror games that have ‘quick, the killer’s after you and there’s no human-sized vent, hide in the bathroom stall’ moments; how do Americans feel watching those moments in horror games if it’s a reality for some during school shootings? Genuine question. Does it take you out of the ‘reality’ of the game because it’s too real? Is it a darkly ‘funny’ ‘ah, yeah, same’ moment?
its genuinely very disrespectful to say that. ive been in two lockdowns and ive had a friend that was in a shooting where someone died and your out here like oh haha tell me your American without telling me your American like actually stfu
Load More Replies...Took me a while to realise a "lockdown" meant school shooting- first thought was "that's a bit extreme for Covid!?" Second thought was "maybe the doors are electronic and occasionally "lock" unexpectedly??" Then I realised it meant school shootings and I felt incredibly sad! I just don't understand how a country can allow stuff like this to happen without doing anything to prevent it!?
All but the 5th are general lockdown things, #5 is the one for shooters
Feet raised is specifically for shooters too, I think
Load More Replies...You’d most likely be watching a horror movie or scrolling through these pics in a place where you feel safe. Not while you’re in immediate, real danger. And that makes a big difference. “To really enjoy a scary situation, we have to know we’re in a safe environment,” Kerr told The Atlantic. “It’s all about triggering the amazing fight-or-flight response to experience the flood of adrenaline, endorphins, and dopamine, but in a completely safe space.”

Waterfall Glen - preserve, walking, biking, hiking trail with many off-trail opportunities - is a around the current Argonne Natl Lab. It is an excellent place to walk. Or bike. Hike. Go off trail and find the ponds and waterfalls. If you feel like walking approximately 'around' Argonne, you still can. But if you want something fancy, go a lil northwest to Fermilab. That building is a villain's lair (and amazing).
My father helped with the RaLa experiments in Bayo Canyon, Los Alamos, NM. The canyon is still radioactive, particularly if you were to cut down a tree and burn it. The radiation eventually killed him, too.
Kerr says humans have been intentionally scaring themselves, and each other, since the dawn of time. "Through all kinds of methods like storytelling, jumping off cliffs, and popping out to startle each other from the recesses of some dark cave," she said.
The expert adds that there are various reasons for this. "To build group unity, to prepare kids for life in the scary world, and of course, to control behavior. But it's only really in the last few centuries that scaring ourselves for fun (and profit) has become a highly sought-after experience."
Came To A Family Dollar In A Pretty Ghetto Area, The Restrooms Are Right Next To The Employee Break Area, And I Saw This Sign On The Way Out
Good company as in they don't expect the employees to try and fight the robbers or something. Also having clear instructions is helpful if something happens. Small one or two people working locations are at risk of something happening even in better neighborhoods.
Standard advice I think. Apart from anything else, I would imagine that insurance would look dimly on companies telling people to fight the robbers
Load More Replies...I worked retail in a very nice area and we had signs like this in the employee area. It's pretty common, not just a "ghetto" thing.
A friend of mine worked at a gas station - he said they had a very similar policy. Even like "ask him if he needs anything. Make him a coffee if if he wants. Do not antagonize him in any way." The money is usually insured, and the clearance rate of gas station robberies is at nearly 90% due to the numerous cameras - at least in Europe, but I would guess the American numbers might be similar. So no use risking anything.
I know a lot of companies that will then fire all personnel who were on the clock when the store was robbed. Doesn't matter if they followed these instructions or not
That’d be incredibly financially irresponsible for the companies to do a turnover like that after any robbery, that’s not even including the liability of civil suits they’d chance by doing that.
Load More Replies...A friend used to work in a gas station. They were robbed, and she peed her pants due to being frightened. The masked robber, then, said "Just like in 3rd grade, whenever you're scared, you wet yourself!", giving away who he was. He left before he got to know that he revealed himself. So, remember: making fun of people for that reason will make you go to jail.
People who have fought back have lost their jobs for not following instructions.
This is standard protocol for pretty much all retail establishments.

Load More Replies...Hunters can just shoot each other. Real Sport. Instead of Deer who are fed salt licks and feed blocks.
Even though gun ownership is very restricted, it even happens frequently in Europe during hunting season that helpers, hikers, horses, cattle and other livestock out on pasture are "mistaken for a boar". Despite reflective vests and/or the shape and size of the victim absolutely not matching with a boar. Culprits are 95% elderly hunters with poor eyesight, often drunk, with a certain status, who nobody in the family or hunting club dares to tell off or the authorities, in fear of consequences. This is one of the many reasons why weapon ownership is highly restricted. There are enough nutters already, we don't need more. Adding to the problem is the right of free access for hunters to all areas, including private ones, in some regions. I don't know the particular rules in my area of the Netherlands, but if I see a hunter on the horses pasture, or shooting in that direction, I unpack my longbow and shoot back.
I think it's saying that sometimes other hunters are sometimes mistaken for deer, so identify your target before you shoot it.

Not everyone enjoys fear. Some actually have a fear of fear. According to VeryWellMind, “Whereas most people experience fear only during a situation that is perceived as scary or threatening, those who live with anxiety disorders may become afraid that they will experience a fear response. They perceive their fear responses as negative and go out of their way to avoid those responses.”

The Poconos aren’t nearly as bad as far as steep and long but boy was I happy to be driving a 4WD truck during a snowstorm from NYC to Niagara Falls. Outside Of A Haunted House Attraction
Sounds lik McKamey manor...... No thanks. Not even without a necklace...
I totally glossed over the title and just read the sign. In my mind, the only possible thing this sign could be referencing would be a casual late night safari with performing monkeys. The monkeys perform for the sheer enjoyment and occasional snacks. But glow necklaces make them CRAZY and they tend to kidnap the wearer and tear them limb from limb. I'm thinking to myself, that is an incredibly laid back sign for a situation involving horrific dismemberment by nocturnal monkeys, resulting in the legal verdict of "You asked for it". Where is this hellish place? Oh, it's a haunted house attraction. No monkey murder sprees, just clean fun. Goodness, the places my mind goes.

This is probably after the case of the young man who went missing in the UK. It's suspected that he drunkenly climbed into a bin to sleep it off and then the bin lorry came a few hours later. They never actually found the body, but evidence suggested that is what happened as he'd slept in a bin before after a night out.

What Is The Meaning Of This Sign? It's Been On The Sub A Few Times But I Couldn't Find A Concise Answer
Usually see these around emergency spillways for dams. In the event the dam has to use that spillway, you don't want to be anywhere near it.
It's the stomping grounds for Zombie Amelia Earhart. You see, when she crashed her plane, she was rescued by none other then Howard Hughes himself. She was barely alive. But HH had a plan, and said "We can rebuild her. We have the technology. We can make her better than she was. Better... stronger...faster." Sadly, he was wrong. She didn't survive the technique, but they certainly made her stronger and faster, but as the undead. Undead is not better by most peoples standards. So she roams the back country as a half robot, half rotting corpse. Your only chance is run up the stairs at least 200 steps which trips the circuitry and resets ZAE.
Likely discharge over a dam from a reservoir.... The siren would be from an automatic overspill system warning you too get to high ground asap
No, it means they're opening the flood gates of a dam and there's about to be a whole lot of water heading your way. That's what the alarm is for.

"Destroying Angels" is the coolest plant name I have ever heard.
Destroying Angels grow in my favorite mushroom forest - they are quite distinct and not tasty looking. The easiest way is to check any white "agaric looking" mushrooms for gill color - champignons have pinkish or greyish gills. Just leave the white gilled mushrooms. For advanced mushroomers - the delicious Agaricus silvicola looks like a "beefier" version of the Destroying Angel but has a distinct aroma and bruises yellow. I learned that the hard way - once left 3 plump and fresh Agaricus silvicolas in the forest because the gills where too light colored. Only learned about the yellow bruising sign after I got home.
Another reason - especially amateurs - not to forage mushrooms in the wild ...
All mushrooms are edible. Some only once. Also they are not plants. They predate plants by hundreds of millions of years

The trail heads are easily accessible, the hike is only moderately difficult and short enough to be a day hike ,in good conditions. All of this lulls unprepared tourists into starting off underprepared. The problem is conditions change dramatically, it can easily be a beautiful summer day at the base, but have high winds and snow at the summit.
Found This Out In The New Mexico Desert
This is actually life-saving but scary to imagine how many people die in need of something like this.
And how many died because they pressed the button

This sign is targeted at people crossing the US/Mexico border illegally. They've probably given up everything to get as far as this sign-- there's no going back.

The Numbers Are Exaggerated, But The Warning Is Valid
Hey, that’s insulting the memory of my uncle who died mixing Christmas pudding batter. He was pulled under by a strong currant.
Load More Replies...I believe this. Every year at the not very dangerous Dutch coast about 10 tourists get killed due to ignore the warnings about currents. That includes people jumping in without safety devices, to save a dog or person - instead of immediately alerting the rescue staff present on several points on the beach.
Been there. It is a beach along the Na Pali coast trail on Kauai. By the time you get there, you are hot and just want to jump in the water. But the undertow is insane and no one is coming to rescue you in time.

So People Normally Play With Bats?
Bats have very small sharp teeth, bites might not be particularly painful or leave a noticeable mark, but can still transmit rabies. Not to mention all the other diseases they can carry due to their freaky immune system. ANY contact with a bat warrants medical attention.
My bestie found a wild bat hanging on a sign in broad daylight. So of course she starts petting it. She sent me a picture and I called her just to yell at her.
"Do people play with bats?". Yes, in countries without rabies they do.
In countries with rabies, they do too. Dumb people see cute wild animals and want to pet them, this should not be surprising to anyone who has ever seen images of dumb tourists on the internet. In my neck of the global woods, tourists and dumb people are always trying to pet baby bears. “Do people play with bears?” Yes, yes they do, for dumb reasons.

Found In A Dead Mall In Livingston, Nj. There Are No Radioactive Sources Or Power Plants Around For Several Hundred Miles
Yes. “Dead mall” doesn’t mean completely dead and abandoned, it means a mall with barely any stores open that few people visit. The “dead mall” in my town has a fish processing plant, the local court of law, a Chinese restaurant and the local cannabis shop, and that’s it 😅😂 Google’s AI thingy says “A dead mall is a shopping mall that is either deteriorating or has low consumer traffic. Other terms for a dead mall include ghost mall, zombie mall, or abandoned mall.“ (edit: I lied, there’s a self-serve dog wash station in the mall too lol, small town dead malls are hilarious)

There were posters on how to build nuclear shelters out of mud and logs in random offices. This produced this joke: What to do in case of a nuclear attack? Wrap yourself into a white sheet and start crawling towards the nearest cemetery, but slowly. Why slowly? So, that you do not cause a mass panic.
Not true, there was until pretty recently a nuclear power plant only 66 miles from Livingston. Not sure why the mall needs this sign tho....

(The black ones are slippery with algae and wet, you fall into the ocean, that's it.)
I once visited a waterhole which had a sign saying "NO DIVING. If you dive into this pool, you WILL break your neck". A local park ranger confirmed that it had happened several times; being a kid at the time, I was terrified merely to just swim in there.
in australia, you'll often find signs saying things like "swooping birds in this area, protect your eyes, face and head. walk, do not run or ride your bike. avoid this area if possible" because of magpie season and honestly i'm surprised one of those signs aren't in this.
I hate that we have to pay for BP premium just to do basic things like read the entire thing!
''Drop bears next 5km'' >.< Terrifying when walking through the bush.
We were working near a bridge once a little off the beaten track. Sign said no diving. One guy decided it did not apply to him and dove in. Guess there had been an old concrete bridge that collapsed at one point or sumsuch? He said he dove into a group of rebar, some pointing upwards and just missed impaling his head by a foot or so.
