“We Have Literally So Much Information Now”: 35 Massive Scams People Are Still Buying Into Prosperity Gospel Preachers.

Specifically Joel Osteen and his ilk. They're why we should be taxing performative mega-churches like they live off of.

All of them. Not just the greediest mega churches. All of them. Housing every homeless person in the U.S would cost $20 billion per year. The sum total untaxed money taken in by churches each year in the U.S , is $75 billion. Churches could fund those housing costs, and give every one of the 550,000 homeless people in the U.S a salary of $31,000 a year, and they'd still have $37.5 billion left over.

Let's see if the religious will keep up the donations if the money goes to the homeless.

Years ago (early 2000s?) I had a relative who was into the Crystal Cathedral / Hour of Power. I watched a couple of his sermons on TV out of curiosity. I was very put off that most of what I saw during the "sermon" was "me,me,me, buy my book, buy this figurine etc" Very little if any actual reading / preaching from the bible. Just a disgusting money grab about donations and purchases. From stuff I read just now, that might have been the son. The dad started Hour of Power back in 1969 and may have been truer to his roots back then (I don't know). I found the whole setup off putting. I guess the crystal cathedral is a catholic diocese now. When they went bankrupt the catholic church next door bought it.

There’s a big difference between between true religious beliefs and practices, and the phony TV preachers who get EXTREMELY rich by bilking their followers. None of the ministers or priests that I know have 3 jet airplanes !

I grew up being forced to go to a church just like this. The pastor had the biggest house on the lake, the newest Cadillac and wore expensive suits every day. Years later when I returned home from the military, he came into the restaurant I was working and was patiently waiting for the transgender waitress to get off work, he saw me and his face went completely pale 🤣

“We Have Literally So Much Information Now”: 35 Massive Scams People Are Still Buying Into Religion.

Wow! This one has generated quite the discussion. Well, here's my two cents: every religion is clearly throwing around just absolutely bonkers, bogus stories. You can't blame people for catching on to that, over time. Not one of these religious stories provides a description of creation or reality that squares with the scientific evidence. Seems like the only "good" purpose for religion these days is that it gives it's followers something to help them with their immature fear of death. That and maybe a sense of community. I sincerely hope that, as we gradually improve, we leave behind the antiquated thinking that allows these ideas the space to propagate.

My church has grown and donated over 25,000 lbs. (12,000 kgs) of fresh produce to local hunger relieve programs; we support a "Section 8" senior living community (because they are all on Medicaid, they can only keep $34 per month of their SS checks to buy everything they need not covered by SNAP) by providing paper products, cleaning supplies, personal hygiene, money for laundry, a monthly birthday party with gifts for the birthday guests, and more; we provide Christmas gifts for 50+ children in our community; participate in Habitat for Humanity builds; and work on disaster relief by cleaning out and rebuilding houses. I think the OP needs to visit a few more churches. Not all are money grabs.

But what is your church not doing? What is it hiding? What is the history of the particular denomination that you follow? how much of your tithings go to special interest groups and lobbyists to influence politicians that make policy that affect the poor and impoverished that you believe to be helping? That is the problem with organized religion, it has the veneer of food but when you peel that veneer away you can see all the rot that it has. The issue is the total aggregate effect various churches have on the overall well being of society, not just a few small local people in a community usually members of the church getting aid. Religion is a net negative for society and more people would have a better outcome in life if there was no organized religion, if you help 50 people but the policies that religions push hurt a million your not exactly being very Christ like.

You know, this is something I saw a while back and it really resonates with me: We've gone from 'my religion says I can't do that' to 'my religion says YOU can't do that'. And this is exactly the reason religion, especially Christianity, is getting so much hate. I don't care if you're religious, I don't care if you are a Christian. What I care about is not having it in my face all the time. What I hate is Christians in government and other positions of power telling me how to run my life and taking away my rights that have nothing to do with anyone except myself. What I will fight against until I have no breath left is organized religion and Christians thinking they know better than me and everyone else how we should live, how we should think, how we should feel, how we should raise our kids and especially, how we should treat other people. I especially hate the hypocrisy of 'we love the sinner, not the sin'. BS. That saying is just an excuse for more Christian bigotry and violence against others who are different from them. You Christians cultivated the hate, you grew it, you marketed it, but now you complain about reaping the results. Too damn bad.

The worst part about dental coverage is the cosmetic designation for repairs that are vital to your health. My bite structure is effed but it costs too much to repair at the moment. Sure I can go without eating, having teeth is purely for cosmetic purposes anyway.

Sad thing is, the example above is understating rather than overstating. Around 2010 I was paying $250 / month for an umbrella policy. I pay first $2,500 but insurance was there in case I had something major like a heart attack. Within a few years (and when I dropped it) they were charging me over $500 / month AND they raised the deductible to $7,500. for the past 10 years or so I've been on state medical and due to age, soon medicare.

Yup. And being mad at the insurance company sure takes the pressure off your employer for not offering a better, more expensive plan, not paying more of the premium on your behalf, or not paying you more so that you can more easily afford the deductible. But hey, insurance companies, am I right?

And it keeps getting worse. Insurance 20-30 years ago was much cheaper and covered everything. I broke my foot badly in the early 2000sand had multiple surgeries and dozens of doctors visits and my out of pocket cost was probably 250$ mostly co-pays an prescription. 2 years ago I went to the emergency room for chest pains and with my low deductible plan it was 1500$ out of pocket for an ekg and a bag of fluids. On top of that they treat you like garbage. I sat in a room for 7 hours waiting for someone to come tell me that nothing was wrong and go see your primary. Its nothing but a giant cash grab in the US.

I love my country Switzerland, but honestly we have an insane health insurance system. Obviously not as bad as the US and you would never be turned away, but I pay CHF 640 a month for basic insurance, then have a franchise of CHF 300. And because I was born sick they won't give me complimentary insurance and definitely not dental.

To find out how this conversation started in the first place, we reached out to HurtHurtsMe, the Reddit user who posed the question, "What do you consider to be the biggest scam?” They were kind enough to have a chat with Bored Panda and explain what inspired them to start this thread.

"With the holiday season and change in weather, it’s hard seeing clothing prices jump around," the author shared. "A jacket could be $50 original price but on sale for $22. Then the next day, it’s the lowest price of the season sale! 50% off. Same jacket is marked back to $50 with 50% off to equal $25. If you are not actively stalking pricing, you could get scammed into what you think is a good deal based on retail messaging."

I feel that Scientology is worse, because it has happened in verifiable recent times. There's much less excuse for being sucked into it, because we know who made it up and when, and admitted to making it up. Mormonism isn't much better, again there is proof that it was made up, when and by whom.

Funeral homes have to disclose and itemize all their costs. My family uses a small locally owned funeral home that doesn't "stock" caskets but rather a catalogue you can look through that lists the various options available for each model. The caskets are delivered the next day and this reduces the costs by 15%. Their hurst is a van. Our families never uses the limo. We also make our plans and decisions before the need, even for young people. "Direct cremation" is the least expensive way to go. Also, not inexpensive, but natural burials are becoming more popular where I live..

Weddings are insane. We looked at a multi-use hall and the cost to rent it for a wedding vs and other type of even was 4 times as much. The whole thing is a giant scam supported by a culture of dream weddings. 30-60k is insane to spend on a day you'll barely remember a few years down the road. We eloped and threw a nice party for our friends and family to celebrate with us.

While I agree even a small funeral and burial can be outrageous and we shouldn’t have to bargain in a time of grief in an unexpected death, it sucks how many people who don’t have much money have fundraisers to spend over $20k on a funeral. I understand wanting to have a decent send off but it’s getting ridiculous. My husband knows to donate my body to science or cremate me and toss me in the river. I kinda hope he dies before me because he will be lost and probably have a hard time with it.. Since his parents are gone his body goes to science. His dad would have been ok but his mom would have freaked out. She was a $20k funeral type of person. But complained about the price to hire someone to mow her lawn or fix her furnace.

this one is changing both due to costs and due to 'earth friendly' aspects. It is much more acceptable these days (USA) to be cremated, or to have a cheap cardboard coffin. One thing you can do is let your relatives know what you want. My grandmother was cremated and zero guilt about what she 'might have wanted' because she chose / paid for it before she died.

As an older American who has traveled to tip free countries and also places with very minimal tipping - I am quite happy to FINALLY see a lot of backlash happening against the tipping culture. A living wage should be baked into the wages. Tips should not happen or go back to being for over the top service. Restaurant owners posting guilt trip signs about how if you don't tip the servers will have to sell their children to pay the rent are obnoxious IMO.

"yeah....but they're not! That's why they need a 30-40% tip!" Yeah, restaurants shouldn't get away with paying waitstaff $2.....but that doesn't justify the expectation that they deserve a significant percentage of your bill as a tip, and acting like everyone else is the a*****e because they won't shell out an additional $100+ for the person who spends minutes taking and delivering your order.

i only tip if the worker went above and beyond to make the expierence a great one. once wen i was at a restaurant i had the sweetest waitress with the most bubbly cheerful personality. she paid alot of attention to our table and the others she was servering. one of her tables was an elderly woman eating alone and wen she wasnt busy shed chat with her so she wasnt alone. 2 of her table thought she was annoying but wenever she came over to check on us or ask if theres anything else we needed her smile alone just made us smile. our meal was $30 and we were gonna leave her $20 tip bc of how hard she worked to make us and others happy but we left her $50 instead bc of the extra effort she put in to make sure the elderly woman didnt feel alone. she even walked the woman to her car. we just believed she deserved more. the other tables except those 2 tipped her well too. the 2 grumpy tables didnt at all. they treated her horribly like she was their personal maid or something. she just took it all without showing how much it hurt her. we ended up becoming regulars bc of her. we learned her name and alot about her over time. such a sweet girl

Anytime there's a post like this, you'll very rarely hear from a service worker agreeing with the post, because they make way more money with tips than they would with a decent wage. They don't want the tipping culture to change, nor does the restaurant industry, so change will have to come from customers first.

Other than servers, I have eliminated tipping. If an industry wasn't tipped 15 years ago, I don't tip them now. If I have to pay before I eat, no tip. If I have to do any work for what I'm paying for, no tip. I'm sick of tip culture.

The customer is paying their income either way. The difference is whether the employer takes responsibility for the workers being paid appropriately.

When it comes to what the OP considers to be the biggest scam, they shared, "Higher Education costs are outrageous."

On average, it costs students in the United States $108,584 to attend college for 4 years, and they can spend even more if they go to school outside of their home state or at a private university.

I agree, John Maynard Keynes's theory that if the government spends enough money on projects, and raising taxes to fund it, that some of it will trickle down to the lower income groups and eliminate poverty, is a scam that has never worked (Keynes is the only economist to self describe his theory as trickle down, and in most economic journals hsi version is the only one that gets that title)

Partially true. I tend to reject the "detoxing" stuff as mostly laxatives to make you poop a lot. But the last sentence is wrong and probiotics can really help with getting the right bacteria in you. There is good and bad, and some things - like eating too much sugar - can cause the bad bacterial to get out of balance (too much). My intestine bacteria was off for decades due to lots of antibiotics (sinus infections) and also sugar when I was younger. Several years ago I started taking 1 probiotic daily. To be blunt - I fart a LOT less and I can now eat "fart foots" - cabbage, beans, broccoli etc - with no problems. I know this is a short explanation / not enough space but if this is you - take the time to read up on probiotics. I was honestly surprised how much they helped me and I wish I knew many years sooner.

I used to work at an office near a music venue. I worked at night, and sometimes a company would shut down our parking garage to sell tickets. I always successfully argued with them, but I had a colleague who parked his car right in the pull-in lane and walked to work. They chased after him and negotiated something, but it was always an annoying inconvenience.

I don't see this as a scam if it isn't required by everybody and is an extra expense for the company. In larger cities many businesses do not have their own parking. My IT job was in a large-ISH city (nothing like Seattle). It happened the city parking garage was literally across the alley from the back entrance of my work building. My employer paid for our monthly parking spaces but they didn't have to. There were other smaller businesses in the area that had employees that parked there and AFAIK those employees had to pay for their own parking.

All the nuns stealing, selling, and either killing or covering up the deaths of babies. Missionaries going to africa during the aids crisis, telling them that condoms are sinful while also handing out injectable meds/vaccines.....while using the same dirty needles for who knows how many people at a time. Most of you reading this DO NOT NEED COLOR PRINTS. About 10 years ago I got fed up with inkjet printers and went back to black laser. Toner doesn't dry out. In 10 years I've replaced the toner cartridge twice, the image drum once. @OP: Your second sentence is answered by your first sentence. They sell the printers for cheap so they can gouge you on the ink cartridges. Kodak made this marketing strategy famous with the polaroid camera.

Your printer cost $50. Does anyone think that's the market value of a printer? No, they're selling it at a significant loss, on the expectation they will make up the difference by selling your cheap behind over priced printer carts! Tank printers (and laser jets with refillable carts) have been around for quite awhile at this point. Those items are priced fairly in excess of $250....but if you pay a fair price for the hardware, ink and toner powder are dirt cheap. 500ml bottle of ink for $10-$15 depending on brand, and 250g of toner powder (good for 5 refills of a toner cart) is around $6

I was a blissfully unaware late teen/early 20s jobseeker who found a really great deal selling knives. And if I got some of my friends and family to buy my knives, they could also learn to sell them! And I'd even get some of the money they made! My parents had to explain what, exactly, the problem was.

Multilevel marketing is a dinosaur that needs to die. There was a time it made sense and was structured more sensibly. No internet, no huge box stores to supply every need. Door to door or other in person salesmen made more sense back then. Some were employees of whatever company. Some were "independent" and technically multi-level. Avon might be a good example. Fast forward and people can usually access the same or similar goods from many sources so paying a person extra to deliver it in person doesn't make sense. And with that (seemingly to me anyway) came a lot more emphasis on making the money by recruiting more people below you and ordering monthly shipments and so on.

Got some relatives who got suckered into Amway. They went to America for a "conference" or whatever it was called and came back suckered into Amway *and* the most obnoxious form of American brand evangelical Christianity (it's a package deal, apparently). You know, the kind that preaches that the earth is flat and only 6000 years old etc. I'm told that as soon as they came back they organised a family get-together which turned out to be an Amway pitch session in disguise. They did this with several different branches of the family. Then they also made aggressive attempts to convert the same family into their newly minted religion as well. At the end of the day it was just two different cults using the same scummy methods, and it created a huge rift in the family and decades of resentment toward them. Thank goodness the wife at least has since come to her senses and their kids left home and realised how insane the stuff their parents taught them is.

Was sending money at wal mart and they asked if I knew who I was sending money to. I did, no problems there. She said they have to ask now because if they suspect fraud and send it the employee can also be liable. She told me about a woman in her 60s that needed to send 500 bucks to her boyfriend, a Mr. Elon Musk. The clerk told her they could not do that. This lady flips her lid on the clerk saying when Elon gets to town they will bring the cops to the wal mart to deal with this because if he doesn't get the money he is going to be so pissed. She said yes let's call the police, that is a great idea. People are awful.

There's a story on my local news here in FL for the last couple of days about an older lady that sent Elon Musk $600,000. They caught the guy but haven't recovered the money. I always miss the beginning of the story, so I don't know what the schtick is.

Catfishing in general. The famous people scams SHOULD be more obvious. (No amount of gift card scratch codes is going to bring Elvis and Michael Jackson back). But I feel like the not famous ones are even worse because when they work they generally involve breaking someone's heart. Mutual friend experienced this a year or two ago. My friend and I tried to tell her it was a scam / all the red flags we were seeing - but she ignored because she had 'found love'. Spoiler - it ended in tears after she had sent him enough money.

Like cmon man, I know you are smarter than this. Thankfully enough all I had to do is ask him why would they make you use gift cards to pay taxes instead of just paying the IRS? The current Secretary of HHS, Xavier Becerra, took a lot of money from Herbalife when he was in Congress (third biggest donor to his many congressional campaigns, more than any other candidate in the USA) and protected them from investigation and regulators. As Biden's head of HHS, he used his power to squash any investigations into them and protect them. When the SEC opened an investigation, it stayed as one on paper only and no further action at the request of Becerra. When Kamala was the AG of California in 2015, he personally asked her to drop the investigation, and shortly later she did and then got $5,000 in donation from them for her re-election campaign. Herbalife is in our literally government right now

The problem is that there's some actual things you can do to joints and ligaments to reset/realign them whatever, but chiropractors base their practice on pseudoscience - it is like someone giving you plant extracts to balance your "humours" - some, maybe most of them do work, but not for the reasons the "healer" thinks, and when they are wrong, boy do they do some damage.

The underlying "science" is wrong, even when you get results - maybe you needed massage or physiotherapy, but they believe (almost religiously) that all disease is caused by "vertebral subluxation", and they might break your spine trying to fix an imagined illness.

Went to a chiropractor first time for severe lower back pain in early 20's. He popped everything and only charged a small fee, but nothing he did touched my back pain and he had zero answers as to why. Realized he wasn't actually trained in medicine when a real doctor diagnosed it as kidney failure from undiagnosed type 2 diabetes. When I say it's a wrong number the person sending it keeps up the conversation, so I join right in, getting more and more bizarre as I go, until they give up. you can buy a lot online with bitcoin, quite a few major retailers accept it, as do some payment processing companies. You can buy a lot with it if you want. The issue is that it is not stable, as it is a digital asset with strong market forces. But also quite a few world governments recognize it https://www.investopedia.com/articles/forex/041515/countries-where-bitcoin-legal-illegal.asp

This is what people don't realise. Predators seek out vulnerable prey. They are after people with learning difficulties, dementia, mental health problems, brain injuries, and those that are vulnerable due to loneliness or grief. When people say 'if you fall for it you deserve to be scammed' they are imagining someone like themselves.

SO OLD. I was sitting here trying to remember if the first time I received it was early internet or completely pre-internet. As in, first one I got may have been a paper letter in an envelope. But it was at least as far back as dial up BBS's and very early email days. The internet tells me some flavor of this scam has been going on since at least the 1800s. -- "The "Nigerian Prince" scam, also known as the "419 scam," is believed to have started gaining widespread attention in the early days of the internet, but its origins as a fraudulent scheme date back much further, with similar scams appearing in various forms even in the 19th century, often referred to as "The Spanish Prisoner" con."

It's just a hoax (often well-intentioned) that pops up now and then, claiming that you're giving [some website] a license to use and sell your intellectual property. Sometimes they'll quote the part of the TOS that says you're granting a license to use, reproduce, or publish your content, but it's only for the purpose of making the website work and be legal. You have an automatic copyright on everything you create (even this post is copyrighted as soon as I click the "post" button). There's a very good argument that you've implicitly granted a license simply by posting to a site that you know is going to use, reproduce, and publish your content, but their lawyers want an explicit license in the TOS. Absent a license, every instance of sending your content to an individual computer via a webpage could be a separate act of copyright infringement.

“We Have Literally So Much Information Now”: 35 Massive Scams People Are Still Buying Into Healing crystals. If anything, they've become even more popular recently.

Edit: Having said that, I *have* seen them be very effective as tools to effect introspection and discussion about mental health, basically operating as a fun, dialectical abstraction of psychological concepts that might be too complicated or daunting to address directly. But it's a slippery slope to letting this abstraction become a real, significant part of how you live your life.

Homeopathy has one (and ONLY one) thing going for it, in that the "doctor" treat their patients with respect and care - it is one of their "dogmas", it seems. Considering that most patients have no idea how homeopathy supposedly "works", the placebo effect plus the "therapy" session with a trusted "doctor" might in fact produce some results. This is not to condone homeopathy in any way, there are still big bucks preying on ignorance, but our real "western" medicine could learn a thing or two about the value of respect towards the patient.

But be careful that something you might consider "homeopathy" isn't actually a legitimate treatment. I had heard about honey being used to heal wounds for years, but ignored it because "homeopathy". But after a nasty bout of cellulitis, the open wound from the surgery just wasn't healing very quickly, even though I was using a triple antibiotic ointment. Went to a wound specialist on my PCP's recommendation, and he told me to use Manuka Honey. I was skeptical, because... homeopathy. But I tried it. The wound healed rapidly (compared to the dreadfully slow healing from before). There are homeopathic treatments that actually help, but they are not the end-all, be-all. They work best in connection with legitimate medicine. And no, not all of them are placebos.

Homeopathic can be ok when it's something minor but I read of a lady that had jaw cancer. She relied on homeopathic nonsense to get it cured after the doctor tried to sway her decision. She came back months later and when the doctor when to touch her jaw, it fell and just hung off her face. She was dead within weeks.

All flagship tech devices are horribly overpriced, and the advances that make a particular device genuinely obsolete don’t come often. But if these companies stopped trying to make us replace them regularly, they’d run out of revenue, thanks to business models built on continuous consumption.

iPhones in general. The entire Apple "ecosystem". It's nowhere near as well integrated as people claim it is, and is so full of errors and glitches and things that don't quite work right. As an example - I get asked by the built in weather app if it has permission to track my location several times a day. It doesn't matter what answer I give (never, while using the app, always, etc) it will still ask again a few hours later. I've even tried uninstalling the app and it still happens. I also have reminders set for certain times of the day that will show up an hour or two late, and when my watch dies, after I charge it and turn it on it sets everything (phone, watch, computer) to "sleep" focus without telling me, so I don't get any notifications - very annoying during my work day to see that I've missed calls from clients. I'm starting to get out of it now, but holy c**p is it annoying.

Then don't buy those items. So long as consumers continue to ignore the things they know are terrible....corporations have ZERO incentive to change. That everyone else is doing something $hitty and short sighted, and you know they're $hitty and shortsighted....it doesn't give you permission to ignore it. Nor does it excuse or negate the consequences if you do. Yes, being a better person requires effort, and it might even require that you deprive yourself of something, or deprive yourself of the most convenient choice in any given moment. No one is going to do it for you. No one is going to force you. Whether you do or do not, is on you. Everyone needs to stop making excuses and learn to accept that.

This is so blatantly wrong. And OP even admits to having bought a big gas guzzeling car. We, the consumers are responsible for buying all the products made by these corporations. The only thing I agree with OP on is the use of private jets, but then again if we didn't buy, buy, buy, there wouldn't be money to fly private jets. We have become so far removed from the places of production that things need to be transported over long distances wrapped in plastic. When I buy my food at the market it comes in the crates it was put into when harvested, but I have had to get used to eating in season and locally, so no tomatoes in winter/spring, and no avocados or bananas.

NO. Stop spreading this manufactured b******t. First off that dumbass study cited "100 companies are responsible for 71% of pollution" And if ANYONE bothered to read the f*****g study, they would have discovered real quick that that number was arrived at by attributing downstream emissions back to the corporation.....with the top of that list consisting of fossil fuel companies. What does that mean? That means the emissions from YOUR car, your power usage, your heating usage....are attributed to the company providing them! Not the person with direct f*****g control of their own consumption. Does the extraction, refinement and transport of fossil fuels contribute to emission totals? Of course. Fossil fuels account for 75% of global emissions. Extraction, refinement and transport accounts for 15% of global fossil fuel emissions (11.25% of global emissions) the other 85% are the result of CONSUMERS buying and burning them. Yes, it falls on the consumer to make better choices.

Your reasoning fails to take into account the economic realities of “consumer choice”. We can buy only what companies make available, and only the goods we can afford. Motor vehicles are a good example of this. Fully electric cars are still significantly more expensive than those fueled with gasoline, and have become even more so in the US with the latest changes to the federal rebates for EVs. Is it your fault that you can’t afford to replace your existing vehicle with an EV, or is it the fault of the companies that price them high and employers who chronically underpay workers? This argument is an extremely bougie one, ignoring the fact that a majority of households in the US are living paycheck to paycheck. This is an institutional and structural problem, not simply a consumer problem.

After a few years of study, we found out why the Prius, and other hybrid cars are so popular for contract drivers for all the delivery and transportation services. It's because they are based on science, and physics, and really good engineering (not perfect but getting better). Electric cars that get plugged in is the same, or worse, than gas engines, scientifically speaking.

The problem is even worse when you realize how other counties like in Asia handle this. Or better said don't do anything about it. I went to Thailand for vacation and they have everything in plastic. Free plastic bags, plastic straws wrapped in plastic package, plastic bottles and no extra fees for using plastic. And not to forget them dumping most of the trash just on one pile. And then we as Americans or Europeans have to seperate everything and pay fees for every little plastic thing and drink from paper straws? It's so dumb.

Plus obviously we as citizens have to do this while all big companies ignore all climate laws and dump their stuff everywhere. But we as the everyday user are the problem

Both sides are true. 8 BILLION people in the world each doing their part definitely DOES make a difference. But also, even if it is true that "top 10 corporations produce 90% of the pollution" (source?), the thing to ask yourself is WHY? Like - what are those corporations doing? Almost certainly the answer is "producing stuff for those 8 Billion humans". So again, individuals can reduce the demand for those products by not buying as much of them.

Say it louder for us. But Elon wants to force government employees to always work from the office, so that won’t be occurring in these “united” states any time soon.

Two things can be true at the same time:: 1) When the 40-hour workweek was introduced, it was a big improvement on what we had. 2) It didn't go far enough. It's time for a 32-hour workweek, 24-hours if we can get it.

You could have a 2 day week if you were prepared to do two 20 hour shifts. If you did them all at once you could have 296 days off work a year! Think of the family time!

How about the scam I fell for :( The fraud department of my bank calling me, alerting me to fraudulent charges happening on my card. I’ve had my identity stolen before, so I wasn’t surprised snd was just grateful they found the charges early on. I googled the number and it was the same # as my bank.

They had identifying info about me that not just anyone would have and asked me verifying questions after that my bank asks me any time I have called them before. It was so, so believable and I was already in a stressed mental state prior to the call. When I called my bank directly the next day, even the employee told me it was legitimate. It wasn’t until I called again that an employee dug into their logs of texts/calls to me that they determined it was fake. Luckily, I was only out about 1.5 hours of my time in total with talking to the scammer, changing card and bank numbers, updating accounts, etc and didn’t lose a dime.

Main lesson I learned: If your bank calls you for ANY reason, hang up and call them directly. Don’t be dumb like me.

Edited to add: When they were sending me texts to verify things / help me add the card alerts to my phone, the confirmation texts came from a number that I’ve gotten legitimate texts from my bank before. They’re too smart!!

My "bank" called me about something "suspicious" and wanted my bank info. I said i wasn't comfortable sharing that info when i was being called by a blocked number. She told me that was fine, and that i should call my bank and clear it up. I did. She was real, and there was something suspicious, which we cleared up, but i told them that having someone call like that was insane.

DO NOT hang up and call them directly. Call them from a different phone. My mother, had the same call, she was sceptical so ended the call and phoned the bank, they confirmed fraud activity, had her set up a new account then confirmed her details to transfer the money to said account. Only it wasn't the bank, the call is diverted back to the scammers. I don't know how it's done because I'm not techy, but if you call them from the same phone, it will go back to them. She lost 50k in several payments. She managed to get 30k back because the bank flagged one of the payments as fraud but did nothing to stop future ones, which meant she was able to hold them liable.

This got me thinking, scams exist before, well, forever. Many years ago, like in the nineties, i received a letter from my bank, a paper letter, in my actual mailbox, with my adress, with bank info and logo. They wrote they wanted to get in touch with me and could i call them, because they couldn't reach me. No word about what it was about. I called my bank and they had no idea what about. For years i've been wondering about that, but that must have been a scam. No idea what they where hoping to win though.

The important point here is that the phone number you see isn't necessarily the number the call is coming from. Spoofing numbers is easy, and almost all robo and spam/scam calls come from a spoofed number. Similarly, a link can use any text at all while sending you to a completely different URL. If you aren't the one dialing a number or typing /copying the URL from a reliable source you don't know for sure where you'll end up.

Spoofing numbers is so trivially easy that Caller ID is worse than useless for any authentication. The companies that own the communication networks could implement a more secure system, but because the government won’t force them to, they don’t want to spend the money.

As a general rule, make every transaction of money or information a 'push' and not a 'pull'. In a nutshell - make sure you initiate it. Never use the number or link in the email or text. Manually go to your institutions web site, or call them yourself at a known number. Over time I have received a number of very legitimate bank emails from banks I didn't have accounts with. But they know if they use big names like BoA, AmEx, Citi etc, that a lot of the recipients will have an account with those big names. I only allow two 'pulls'. One is my house mortgage payment and the other (for the discount) is tmobile auto pay. but both are a fixed / same amount every month so I know what to expect.

That happened to me. They can spoof the call so it looks like it’s coming from your bank. They told me someone had accessed my account and made Zelle payments to themselves, gave me confirmation numbers and amounts, and said they were going to transfer me to the anti-fraud division and that I should give them that information. I said, “No, don’t worry about it. I’ll call back later” and then called my actual bank. Yep, scam.

You could also access you bank account online and see if there was any withdrawals. Also, you can set up alerts for withdrawals/deposits.

Always call the number on your bank card. I once had the "fraud department" from Bank of America call me. They were so realistic I immediately notified the bank to let them know about this scam. Remember, your bank will NEVER call you!
