Sad Shelter Dog Whose Only Friend Was This Elephant Toy Learns That He And His Toy Are Getting New Home
Meet Smokey the rescue dog who won’t go anywhere without his elephant toy. His previous owners lost their home and couldn’t look after the pooch anymore. The 5-year-old doggie was surrendered into a Franklin County Dog Shelter & Adoption Center on Valentine’s Day, along with his favorite toy “so that he can take comfort” in it. Smokey loves his stuffed gray elephant with pink ears so much, there was a sign on his kennel saying that he and elephant must be adopted together.
The elephant was the only thing to make Smokey’s days at a shelter a bit brighter. Other than playing with the toy, it has been a few depressive weeks for Smokey who seemed to be extremely shy and stressed. Smokey was scheduled to be euthanized in March…
Then one day in came two volunteers from the nonprofit I Have A Dream Rescue Organization. They fell in love with Smokey immediately and committed to finding him a foster home.
Now that the dog knows he will have a new home, he can’t stop smiling. “He was sad and laying with his elephant until [volunteer] started to talk with him,” says Melissa Sutherland, I Have A Dream’s treasurer. “It is amazing what rescue does for dogs.”

Share on FacebookHow heartbreaking, to lose your home is a horrible feeling. To also have to give up your dog is...I don't even know the word for that level of heartbreak. I lost my home once and if I hadn't been fortunate enough to have family that let me and my dogs stay with them I don't think I could have survived the stress.
This is so sweet... I have a rescue doggie named Gronk who can't sleep unless he is spooning with some one.
I could not work in a shelter - I'd have a house full of strays (and soft toys) - Kudos to all of you that do work there.
Please people...adopt, don't shop. There's absolutely no reason to "purchase" a dog or cat. Perfectly awesome cats and dogs just waiting for forever homes in high-kill shelters. My 3 cats and 1 dog are all rescues and are pretty damn cool, if I say so myself.
Even the least attractive guys are almost always beautiful on the inside. After all, they are Little People too!
I couldn't find him on their adoption page - hoping he found his forever home!!
He's back up for adoption, the rescue that said they were coming through backed out. He still needs a rescue, spread the word!!!!
This is so heartbreaking....i can't stand the thought of lonely depressed animals, i was tearing up at this entire article. I'd love to see updates of this doggie in his new home
What a lovely animal poor wee soul only having his little elephant but yah he's rescued now xxxhave a great life wee one x
Funny how we do everything in our power to keep criminals and useless humans alive but do whatever we can to kill animals we feel are "useless".
My heart is breaking every time I see articles like that. Poor little pooh, ifI only could save all strays...
Stuff like this just makes me tear up inside...I wish that everyone could just be happy and well!
What a gorgeous boy,I hope his forever home is filled with so much love, security and warmth, and lots more toy elephants!!
Someone stop this spamming, please. The other day it was someone with Conway as a last name, now her... :/
