There are plenty of different ways to protect your car from theft, but one owner of a Volkswagen Transporter van decided to protect it in a novel way – by covering the new vehicle in rust-like vinyl to make it look like a hunk of junk!
The artwork for the vinyl wrap, done by Clyde’s Wraps in Glasgow, involved taking exact measurements of the entire van. This allowed their artists to realistically model rust as if it had been formed by water running down from the vehicle’s handles, mirrors and frames.
“It only took 3 days for the police to pull him over to ask what was going on with all the rust,” Clyde’s Wraps write on their website. “Please note that there is nothing illegal about going to town with graphics on your vehicle but it may confuse others!” That’s true, but in this case, it seems like that was exactly the point – and it worked!

Unless you have a personalized numberplate in the UK - the number plate will reveal the age of the care - no matter how it looks. Also professionals will know that a particular make is out of aluminium for example, rather than steel . Plus a lot of times cars are stolen for parts rather than to drive - rust is irrelevant ...

As the graphic artist behind this can I point out we did this in 2014 for our client who has a great individualistic taste in life (which I admire) and the van was a brand new 2014 VW T5. The number plate reads T5 OMG! And if you bear with us at Clyde Wraps you might see it's baby soon! Thanks to all for Sharing - we're overwhelmed!

Doesn't matter you can tell its new - it's a talking point and people spot it around - thieves risk being seen driving away, and they have to strip it before moving it on. Much easier to nick one that doesn't need the work, and thieves are all about an easy life. Huge amount of fun and very nicely done!

How cool would it be to do have the reverse done..? Ie, you have a s****y old clunker and these guys wrap it to make it NOT look like a piece of s**t.. That's awesome

I don't think it matters you can tell if its new - something outstanding like this gets known around town, its a talking point and easily spotted - thieves risk being seen driving it away, and they'd have to spend time stripping it to move it on. Even if you're stealing to order, its much easier to nick one that doesn't need the work - and thieves are all about an easy life. Hurrah for a bit of fun and a sense of humour!

It's a great idea, but if the thief is any kind of pro, like Daniela said, they can tell from the headlights and door handle to see the car is actually new...

This rusty car has some but they must think bout auto thiefs too. Newest tires, flashing VW badges in front and bottom, pretty cool signal lamps etc. But still looks good. Good work.

It looks fairly good from a distance but if you get within about 15 feet you can tell. Not to mention it's wheels, windows and lights.
