A dog considered “unadoptable” is helping abandoned chimps get back on their feet.
The pup’s name is Princess, and she was belongs to Jim and Jenny Desmond, wildlife rehabilitators. She was considered unadoptable and may have faced euthanasia. The Desmonds decided to foster her and eventually welcomed her to the family. They have taken her all around the world helping injured, neglected and abandoned animals.
Their latest project is providing support for chimps in Liberia. The Desmonds take in baby chimps who are victims of the bushmeat and pet trade – both of which are illegal.
While they are by these chimps’ side as they heal, so is their 9-year-old dog.
“Princess truly helps the chimpanzee orphans feel safe, secure and loved. She adds immensely to the feeling of family they inherit when they come into our home,” Jenny Desmond tells This Dog’s Life. “Not only does she welcome them and shower them with gentle kisses, but she is also very protective of them.
