Pregnant Woman Steals Coworker’s Tiramisu Because Her “Baby Wanted It”, Cries When Confronted
It’s no secret that many pregnant women are hungry lions. They’re forming a whole new human in their bellies and are eating for two, after all. Some also have cravings that didn’t exist before they were expecting. Generally, moms-to-be get quite a bit of compassion, sympathy, and preferential treatment during the months leading up to the birth. But one worker has shared how they’ve tried to be patient with a pregnant colleague and have now just about had it up to their eyeballs.
The expectant mom is constantly stealing her colleague’s food and snacks from the work fridge, despite being asked not to. When the pregnant woman recently devoured a decadent dessert that wasn’t hers and blamed it on the baby’s cravings, the co-worker lost it. They reported the woman to management but are now wondering if that was a bit too unkind.

Cravings are a natural part of pregnancy, but experts warn that moderation is key
Pregnant women may be eating for two, but experts say, on average, they only need to up their calorie intake by 200-300 calories during the second and third trimesters. Overeating and excessive weight gain can actually have a negative impact on both mother and baby.
“Gaining too much weight can lead to an increased risk of a cesarean delivery, delivery complications, gestational diabetes and hypertension in pregnancy,” warned Dr. Arnaldo Torres is the chair of OB/GYN at Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital. “The baby could be at risk for a heavy birth weight, childhood obesity, and adult obesity later in life.”
Women who begin their pregnancy at a healthy weight should gain around 25 to 35 pounds. For underweight women, the figure is 28 to 40 pounds, and those who are already considered overweight are recommended to keep weight gain between 15 and 25 pounds. Women with obesity should aim for 11 to 20 pounds.
According to the Mother Baby Center site, pregnancy cravings are very normal. They’re either a result of changes in a woman’s nutritional needs. For example, a certain nutrient deficiency like iron might cause a red meat craving. The site also suggests pickle craving and iron deficiency tend to be related. Another cause of cravings is the surge in pregnancy hormones.

Individual cravings vary from woman to woman and can change significantly over the course of their pregnancy. It’s okay to give into cravings, to a point. However, pregnant women should still aim to stay healthy and not overindulge too much.
“If you are craving chocolate, try small portions of dark chocolate. Aim for frozen yogurt or sherbet instead of full-fat ice cream,” suggests Dr. Torres. “Be careful with spicy foods, as heartburn could be a side effect. If you’re craving salt, try flavorful salt-free seasonings such as garlic powder, balsamic vinegar, or a salt-free Italian seasoning. A good alternative to potato chips is thinly sliced roasted potatoes flavored with a salt-free seasoning.”
According to the Pampers website, some common pregnancy cravings include sweets (chocolate, candy, or tiramisu!), savory high-calorie carbohydrates (pizza, chips), animal protein (steak, chicken), fruit, savory high-calorie dairy (cheese, sour cream), carbohydrates (pretzels, cereal), fast food (Chinese, Mexican, falafel), cold foods (ice pops, slushies).
But then there are women who have off-the-wall cravings like mud, dirt, charcoal, or soap. This is a condition known as Pica and can be harmful if not controlled. “Pica is an eating disorder characterized by an appetite for substances that lack any nutritional value,” explained Dr. Torres. “Women who lack calcium or iron in their diet may feel the need to eat these non-food items. If you crave these types of items, it is best to see your doctor to rule out vitamin deficiencies.”

I feel like I am living in a parallel universe where people stealing shĩt and whining about it is the norm. WTAF?!
If I don’t eat lunch I don’t feel well. If I was waiting hours to eat my lunch and it went missing I would be really upset. The other coworkers can bring in food or set up a lunch fund for the poor pregnant colleague if they want. I would have said, “that tiramisu cost me $__, I need you to repay me.”
Load More Replies...Tell HR that the tiramisu was for a dear friend in the hospital with cancer. If she's going to use pregnancy as an excuse then turn it around on her!
And that the container wasn't a clear one so, she'd have to go snooping to begin with. How could "the baby" want tiramisu when you just lay eyes on it and think "f**k OP, this is mine no matter what, and you want it don't you baby?" sickens me!
Load More Replies...Is this standard is the US? I see so many co-worker stole my food stories. If someone had stole my lunch at work, it would only happen once. It would be a serious matter and cause for a verbal warning at the least.
I live in the US. I worked retail in a grocery store for 2 1/2 years during the pandemic. We had a "work refrigerator" in the break room. No one ever stole my lunch while I worked there, nor did I ever hear one of my co-workers complain that their lunch was stolen. But it also seems like most of the stories I hear on Reddit that are "my co-worker ate my lunch" sound like they are working in office buildings or small offices. So, I cannot say I ever personally experienced my lunch being stolen (or heard of it secondhand), but it seems like it's fairly common.
Load More Replies...If anyone steals my food for any reason, there's going to be problems. I would never take anyone else's food because I don't know who made it, how long it's been setting somewhere, what's in it, or anything else about it. I'm not taking any chances getting sick on someone else's food. And my food is spicy with odd combinations of ingredients because that's what I like. Anyone taking my food would not only be disappointed but also have a huge issue on their hands.
I cannot imagine eating someone else's rando lunch. I obviously eat "someone else's food" when I go to someone's house for dinner, but I cannot fathom just opening the work fridge in the break room and grabbing a random bag, opening it, and just starting to scarf down whatever was in there. What if whomever packed their lunch left some of the meat/perishable items out on the counter overnight, and THEY don't care about eating it the next day, so they packed it up? What if they used expired ingredients or didn't notice the mold on an ingredient? I know a little mold won't kill anyone, but I'm not even risking an upset stomach and diarrhea on someone else's lunch XD AND then there's the moral and ethical considerations on top of it - I MIGHT steal from a billionaire, but I wouldn't steal from a co-worker. That's low. I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I stole other peoples' lunch/snacks.

What is with all these people stealing other's food at work? There seems to be an incident every other day recently. Whatever excuse they give it is very low behavior.
Food theft should be treated the same as any kind of theft and grounds for termination of employment in my opinion. If it doesn’t belong to you hands off!
Stealing is stealing, no matter if you have a human being growing inside you. I learned in preschool that taking things which don't belong to me is wrong. This woman is a total jackass of a thief.
If a coworker ever stole my lunch I don't think it would happen a second time. I would make such a scene. I don't care if people thought I was crazy. Don't touch my food.
Pregnant or not, thievery is thievery! OP labelled and put a warning on his food and obviously the unfit birth giver still rummaged through it and consumed. OP did right in reporting her and hopefully the boss will at least slap her with a warning about food theft. As for the miscreant colleagues who think OP went to far, let's see if they are willing to constantly give up their share of food to the criminal with child later on! SMH!!!
Theft is theft. If she is going hungry because she is single and pregnant, she should speak up and get some help going; not steal someone's food.
If she is that poor, she really shouldn't be having a baby in the first place. They have to be fed, too.

"the baby just really wanted tiramisu", don't care, that doesn't give her any right at all to anyone else's food
Coworkers who think that you should let her eat your food should step up and give her money or buy her food
Entitled behaviour is always stupid, regardless of your circumstances. This woman can eat anything she wants, as long as she pays for it or prepares it herself.
That's some well developed baby that already has a taste for specifically bakery made tiramisu!
There are going to be many, many tears in that meeting to try and get out of it.
Single mother. Also pregnant. Thief. No impulse control. Probably 65 IQ.
Being single and pregnant isn't a crime, nor does it say anything about a person's character. Stealing and emotional manipulation, however, is a definite problem.
Load More Replies...She's a thief. I'd tell her I feel sorry for her baby, being born to such a low character mother who won't even be able to teach her right from wrong. She'll obviously be a terrible parent, she has no self control.
What if she stole some food, had an allergic reaction and had to be hospitalised? did she think of her baby before stealing a potentially lethal dish, and particularly one which if made to original recipe would have some alcohol? Nah, once a thief, always a thief, HR hearing all about this from me.
YTA for even possibly thinking YTA for being upset that someone knowingly, continually, steals from you.
Not usually. It absolutely makes sense to show them consideration when it it comes to heavy lifting, offering them a seat, etc, but apart from that, pregnancy is not an illness, and it does not negate your duty to be a decent human being, either.

My manager took their side and said I was just whining and get over it. I have never been so angry over something so small that I can recall. I didn't even get any.
She prob did this before being pregnant now it’s just in the open. Wonder who else she’s pushing over and taking their foods? She’s gonna be an entitled mom too I think. Watch out at the baby shower. Bet some gifts she won’t be as “thankful” for. Also maybe slip a tiramisu in as a gift too before u leave or a dessert for the table lol
Was she only stealing OP's food? If so, why was she (OP) singled out? Baby or no, I'd have to have her or myself leave. I'm heavy handed!
