Guy Is Mad Canadian GF Cancelled All Her Trips To America: “Doing The Classic American Thing”
According to an old saying, it’s best to avoid discussing religion, politics, s*x, and money in public, as they may lead to heated arguments and hurt feelings.
In a relationship, however, open and honest dialogue about these topics is essential for building understanding, trust, and long-term compatibility.
A post on the subreddit r/AmIOverreacting recently sparked a heated debate about national loyalty. Its author, a Canadian woman, shared that her American boyfriend is unhappy with her decision to boycott travel to the U.S. in response to recent tensions between the two countries.
Unsure whether to continue standing by her principles, she’s asking others to share their take on the situation.
Recent U.S. elections have polarized both political parties, but they seem to be affecting international couples as well

Not many couples have different political beliefs

In a new University of Michigan study, researchers analyzed data from more than 4,000 people to see how common it is for partners to differ politically, what factors might lead to such differences, and how these differences affect their relationships.
Nearly 1 in 4 couples (23%) had different political party affiliations, and less than 8% were made up of one Democrat and one Republican. This means that most couples in the study shared similar political beliefs, whether it was their party preference or overall political ideology, said the study’s lead author Amie Gordon, U-M assistant professor of psychology.
Interestingly, factors like education, income, personality, and how long people had been together did not strongly predict whether they would have different political views.
However, couples who did have differing political views had slightly lower relationship quality. This effect was noticeable in everyday interactions as well as overall relationship satisfaction.
Gordon, who co-authored the paper with graduate students Annika From of U-M and Maria Luciani of the University of California, Berkeley, highlighted other things matter more for relationship quality—such as perceptions of overall similarity and shared values—than whether someone is politically different from a partner or not.
But even when they do, experts think they should be able to find common ground

Dr. Jeanne Safer, psychotherapist and author of I Love You, But I Hate Your Politics, agrees. She thinks political beliefs shouldn’t be the primary focus in choosing a life partner, nor should they dominate your relationship.
“It’s very important for people to expose themselves to those who disagree. It will expand your horizons,” says Safer, who recently celebrated her 40th wedding anniversary with journalist Richard Brookhiser, all while holding opposing political beliefs.
If political identity is particularly important to someone, Safer advises to keep the news cycles respectfully limited. This, according to her, applies both ways.
“I had a couple, who after many years of marriage, came to me because they were ready to break up. They were thoughtful and cared about each other. They had gone through a lot of difficulties together,” she says. “However, the husband became a conservative later in life. Even if you marry someone who has the same politics as you, it doesn’t mean they’re going to have it many years later… And they were ready for a divorce because, in their big house, he was taping Fox News in the basement. The wife said, ‘It comes through the air and pollutes the house.'”
“I said, ‘You have to stop this, it’s his house too. He has a right to listen to it, though he doesn’t have the right to blast it. Get used to the fact that he’s a different person than you, or you’re going to lose your marriage,'” Safer recalls of the sessions. “You know what was amazing? They stopped.”
Marriage, Safer explains, is the coming together of two equals with different thoughts and perceptions of the world—the ability to see that helps couples settle their arguments and move forward.
The woman has received a lot of support in the comments
But some people agree with her boyfriend

Why on earth would anyone with a functioning synapse in their head want to go to Trumpistan? TUCK FRUMP
Her response is very sane. I live in the US and our country should generally be avoided for the dumpster fire it is becoming.
Poor people in Panama and Greenland - Orange is now openly threatening them with military invasion.
D*****s actually threatened Iran too - how does he think that will play out? Guy intent on starting WW3

The fact that half of USA has voted and justifies his actions is deeply worrying. Even more worrying is that the have sporn that can fill Trump's shoes once he dead or out. Musk has American children. That is very worrying, sorry scary. This is a coup, slow and calculated coup. And nothing can be done now to stop it. Musulini, Hitler Franco Stalin weren't the first totalitarians, they just seize the opportunity after people like trump had spread the seeds. The worst is to come. I wouldn't bet my bottom Euro that he won't try a change the constitution to stay in power. They say it impossible, but the said the same about Hitler
I think a lot of people are overlooking this fact. yes his Presidency 'may' be temporary but his actions have highlighted the fragility and volatility of a two-party system, hugely divided on practically all matters. It has shown that even if a new President comes in and tries to rebuild relationships / remove tariffs etc - the successor can just overturn it all in less than two months. The government of any country would be stupid to consider the USA a partner or ally now for this reason alone.

I do not blame ANY non-American for boycotting the US, or staying away. The Trump regime is embarrassing, and evil. -signed, an American.
It is not "classic American" to downplay what Orangebrain is trying to do to Canada. There are millions of us who support you. I live in the U.S. and am ashamed at what this country has come to.
Until the rest of the world see some real actions from the "ashamed", you are enabling the orange clown with your silence.
Load More Replies...I am an American stuck here with this s**t for the next 4 years (I hope its only 4 years) and I don't blame her. Its a f*****g joke what he is doing and to Canada of all countries. We are so lucky to have such a great relationship with our northern neighbors. No worry for centuries about wars or invasions. Just peace and cooperation and that fat piece of s**t comes along and blows it up for what? Some kind of b******t power play? Its embarrassing and frustrating. I feel angry and hopeless every day at what is going on in this country. To my Canuck friends please know its not all of us Americans, not even half that want this s**t.
You aren't alone. The situation is absolutely mind-boggling and frustrating beyond belief. I've put myself on a news diet for a couple of weeks, because I'm not getting more than four hours of sleep per night. The stress is wearing me dangerously down.
Load More Replies...The people who tell her that she shouldn't put politics over her relationships and that weddings are to celebrate love and not to lump all Americans together are forgetting that it's not just about the people. It's also not just about safety. There's the issue of travel contributing to their economy and not wanting to be a part of that. Canadian dollars are better spent travelling our own country (as expensive as that is) or our allies' around the world. She's not telling him not to go home and see his family, and she's not even saying she won't see his family- she just won't travel to the US.
Our extended family is very international and inter-racial, including white Democrat Americans in a very red state. Instead of us doing our usual summer holiday through Canada and USA, our American family members are visiting the rest of us in Canada, Europe, and Asia until the stupidity in USA stops.
