Usually, when you read a history article or story, it's mostly just dry facts and your imagination. But an amazing photo gives something a bit different. It shows you how it all actually looked, letting you understand the historical moment more intimately. Dorothy Counts - The First Black Girl To Attend An All White School In The United States - Being Teased And Taunted By Her White Male Peers At Charlotte’s Harry Harding High School, 1957
This is the era Trump voters wanna go back to...you know...when America was "great."
Exactly......he wants to go back to a time when whites dominated society by racism and violence agai g minorities. Not gonna happen!
Load More Replies...That's what I was thinking, how brave and determined she looks. What a hero!
Load More Replies...I can't even imagine going through that. It makes me sad not just for her but that there were that many people in one place being so mean and hurtful to a fellow human being. We like to think things have changed but there is still plenty of people to fill 1000s of high school auditoriums, who would act the same way. :( I would be heartbroken if I found out my kids ever acted this way.
Ginger snap that's why it's important to set a good example. Racism, bigotry and bulling aren't born traits they're learned. So it's up to those of us that want to see this change to set an example for the change. Be careful of how we express our anger and sadness because we always have our children watching
Load More Replies...I don't think any of us could imagine what these heroes went through. Absolutely amazed at their resolve and courage!
I am amazed at the braveness those women had in those times. White men with a two digit IQ taunting her. I hope someone gave them a b***h slap so they woke up!
I would love to go back in time and beat the s**t out of that a*****e in the checkered shirt...and the other a*****e in the stupid 50´s tie.
i am wondering those who sneered on her are they still alive? just asking...
According to wiki, "Counts received a public apology from a member of the crowd which harassed her in 1957."
Load More Replies...I was 9 yrs. old & remember hearing about this. Was totally confused and sad.
Thank God she did not let that time in her life define her. It actually breaks my heart to hear and read about the way she was treated because everyone deserves and education especially the ones who want it. The ones who want to cause havoc, clowning around and being disrespectful should be in a separate school so as not to interfere with the ones who want to learn. Congratulations Dorothy Counts Scoggins for making something wonderful out of your life despite the animosity you faced !!
what a time for black women :/ amazing girl. hope not all her class mates were a******s
Wonder how many people where sitting there wishing they had the guts to tell the idiots to shut up?
How times have changed, went to a wedding with five hundred guests and we were the only two pale skinned guests there. This was in South Africa.
Makes me angry and ashamed to be a white male. Wish someone would have sat down next to her to show their support. But also makes me so proud of her and her determination and strength.
In reference to photo #1 Is THIS what Trump and his followers mean when they chant his political mantra, 'MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN'?
Ok but wouldn't this make an amazing movie with Zendaya as Dorothy? I mean as long as they actually said what happened and didn't try and turn it into leftist propaganda that is.
The last time I went to the States I saw that WASP were still going strong. The Amercian government interferes throughout the world in business that does not concern it. Also, thanks to the States attacked of in Irak and having a full war, we now in Europe have none stop terrorist attacks every week. The United State should mind its own business and leave the rest of this planet alone. We would have much less problems. Apartheid still exists in the U.S.A.. The native Amercian Indians are still kept apart in reserves, Afro-Americans are still considered by whites as lower cast. White police kill more black men than anyother ethnic group.
The US isn't perfect, but your comment is wrong in many respects. Native Americans can live wherever they want. A large number choose to live on land that has been ceded by the government and is there own, sovereign land. African-Americans are treated poorly by some people, but the majority of Americans are not hostile to them at all. White police kill twice as many white people as black people every year- still statistically unbalanced, but directly in conflict with your comment. Does America make mistakes? Absolutely. Should we mind our own business more? Many Americans would like to, but every time a conflict springs up in the world, it seems like the world says "America should do this" or "America should do that."
Load More Replies...I hope they didnt do well in life. I dont have time for people like that
These are the kind of people who who change the world
Load More Replies...After four days of harassment that threatened her safety, her parents forced her to withdraw from the school.
I wonder if anyone in the background is embarrassed their ignorance was caught for all to see.
If I only had 1/10th of that bravery and perservearance, I would consider myself blessed!
The people in the picture probably have grown up grandkids, maybe great grandkids now
People were truly so cruel and unfortunately today still are..strength embodied for sure!!
people were truly so cruel and still are! Strength embodied for sure!!
Such a strong girl I kind of know the feeling she is going thru I hope she had a good life Just show you how narrow minding the other schoolmates were I blame this on the upbringing at home
Sehr, sehr starke Frau - ich würde gerne wissen was sie in diesem Moment gedacht hat.
She looked so pretty for school that day only to be teased by those horrible boys.
So disgusting. Looks like a teacher or grown-up man on the right laughing along. (*PLEASE NOTE: To every black person seeing this, please know there are a lot of white people like myself who find this disgusting and, just like back then, there are good and bad people in all colors. I will always stand with and love my black brothers and sisters.)
It was so sad. I ws in grammer school in the 60's when they put one poor black girl in our class. I remember that i was sorry for her but i was too afraid to approach her and befriend her either.
Nobody should have to put up with that type of harrassment. But good on her for standing up and being strong.
This shows an amazing amount of passion and bravery, this woman shouldn't be teased but should be praised and respected.
HAHAHAHA!!! Those were the days!!! If it weren't so easy to troll Black people, this wouldn't of happened.
Breaks my heart! She was such a courageous and lovely soul. Ignorant jerks laughing behind her makes me so angry!! :/
Wow love this picture ! When you have the Will ! Beautiful silent triumph ...
Wonder if any of those jokers ever grew up and feel ashamed by what they were doing?
The whie male peers laughed at their own ignorance and failing to see themselves in the black girl's face.
She looks courageous on the outside but I can guarantee you she was scared sh**less on the inside. She obviously wanted the education more than what her fear was. GOD BLESS HER!!
I wonder if any of the boys in this photo look back and feel ashamed? I'd really like to believe they are.
How horrible to go through that just to get a good education, I bet she became more educated and more powerful than those idiots behind her.
Everyone is asking, "what happened to these boys?" They run the country now.
This is heart-breaking. Indeed she is strength embodied, but such a burden for one young woman to bear alone. :'-/
Why does this still continue into the 21st Century is my question? Goddess-Is...94-png.jpg
I wish I could have sat beside her and gave her some support. What a really brave and determined young lady. Total admiration for her
Proof that maintaining your composure is hard, & in the end you'll come out way ahead of the bullies! Thank her for the courage to prevail!
Of all of the balls in the room hers are the biggest. Strength, courage, class and beauty.
God, this is the kind of behaveor that makes my skin crawl. Why are certain people like that?
In Canada, we never had "sagretion" Idon't even know how to write it...
I would like to see a follow-up with the white boys. Where are they now and how they have lived since this nasty business.
I wonder where those nasty little shits are now. I wish I could have been there to support that young woman - I hope her education took her to better places.
Ignorant cracker kids come from Ignorant cracker parents who are legitimized by ignorant cracker social/political leaders.
The guy laughing loudest appears more like a teacher than a student. Sad.
Beautiful strength. Those dickbags behind her are probably still buttholes raising little buttholes to follow in their foot steps.
They knew better but wanted to be idiots, like their parents, any way.
What a rude ignorant lot they were. She,s putting them to shame by not reacting
I'm proud of you Dorothy, for being the first. How difficult it must have been for you.
Typical ignorant white yanks, what else would you expect from them, she has probably got more brain in her little finger than all these white bastards put together, and NO I am also a white man but with manners.
Despicable. Learned hatred. No reason on earth for it. No reason at all. Heartbreaking.
Amazing courage, how I admire her. I would like to think I would do the same but know I wouldn't.
After four days of harassment that threatened her safety, her parents forced her to withdraw from the school.
ces jeunes crétins sont la preuve vivante de la "supériorité" de la race blanche!
Not that much changed, USA. It's been more than 50 years and you are still this low
She succeeded and those little losers sold household articles at the door i bet. Pick on others is easier than looking at yourself.
Quite the commentary on poor behavior by those white males which isn't just juvenile males. It looks like an adult is enthusiastically participating.
She was out of their league and they were just jealous pieces of sh*t.

Great collection of images that reflect human history. The good and the bad.
Most of these photos just prove we've done terrible things as humankind and never learn from any historical archive depicting so. :( Still, wonderful to learn so much from visuals of another era.
Nah. The very fact that you found the cruel ones troubling proves that we DID learn and are indeed improving. Maybe slowly, but certainly.
