Removed: Photographer Removes Phones From His Photos To Show How Terribly Addicted We’ve Become
American photographer Eric Pickersgill photoshopped away the smartphones and digital devices from his portraits of everyday life. The project “Removed” aims to show our addiction to modern technology, social media, and hyper-connectivity. Pickersgill knows that he’s also amongst the addicted.
The photographer was inspired by a chance encounter in a New York cafe. “Family sitting next to me at Illium café in Troy, NY is so disconnected from one another,” Pickersgill writes in his notes from that day. “Not much talking. Father and two daughters have their phones out. Mom doesn’t have one or chooses to leave it put away. She stares out the window, sad and alone in the company of her closest family. Dad looks up every so often to announce some obscure piece of info he found online.”
He achieved the surreal effect in his photography art by asking strangers and friends to remain in position, taking the shot and then removing the devices in final photoshopped pictures.

The project inspiration came from a chance encounter in a NYC cafe
“Family sitting next to me at Illium café in Troy, NY [was] so disconnected from one another”
“Not much talking. Father and two daughters have their own phones out”
“Mom doesn’t have one or chooses to leave it put away”
“She stares out the window, sad and alone in the company of her closest family”
“Dad looks up every so often to announce some obscure piece of info he found online”
“Despite the obvious benefits that these advances in technology have contributed to society, the social and physical implications are slowly revealing themselves”
“In similar ways that photography transformed the lived experience into the photographable, performable, and reproducible experience…”
“…personal devices are shifting behaviors while simultaneously blending into the landscape by taking form as being one with the body”
“This phantom limb is used as a way of signaling busyness and unapproachability to strangers while existing as an addictive force that promotes the splitting of attention between those who are physically with you and those who are not”
“I’m not attempting to tell others what to do with their time, I’m just hopefully offering up a moment of realization”
“I just personally need the reminder to put it down because it is an addiction”
Thank you Eric Pickersgill for the interview!

Oh, f**k off, you pretentious dimwit. Just because you took a bunch of black and white pictures of people looking disappointed by their hands doesn't make everyone into desocialized zombies. Most of the mindless fuckwits praising this c**p are blissfully unaware of the beautiful irony in a wannabe viral "art project" being concerned about people focusing too much on Buzzfeed articles and not enough on talking to each other about how boring life is. Instead of staring at the newspaper, the radio, or the TV, everyone is staring at their phones. This is not a new "problem," we just have more avenues with which to share uncreative hipster photo galleries of it, now.
I rather look at this from a different angle. smartphones are an extension of our being, they make us smarter and able to access information much faster. they improve the economy and potentially have a hidden helping hand toward the advancement of human scientific endeavors. in the near future we will most likely have implants coupled with a retina lens in our eyes to make our brains and minds thousands of times smarter and faster at processing information. I see this as another evolutionary step toward an exciting future for humans. many people don't share this belief but I am in line with elon musk in that fact that smartphones are an extension of our intelligence not a "digital leech" not an "addictive device" but rather an augmentation of what we are capable of. with that said it's always wrong to distract your attention from your loved ones. this goes for "reading books" " reading news papers" "solving puzzles" and talking on the phones for hours. balance is key.

St Peter walks up to God one day and asks. "What has been going on down on earth lately?" Gad asks "what do you mean?" St Peter tells him that "Seems everybody that comes up here in the last 20 years just walks around staring at the palm of their hand like they think they lost it?"
Terrible. Thing this is true when i go out on a date with my guy i leave my phone in car so we can devote all our time to each other .....
The art of conversation is slowly dying. When one tries to have a conversation with most people nowadays, their grammar is all wrong.
I was going to take over a society I would give a majority of people smart phones and load them with social apps and game apps and get them so completely addicted that they would not even see the take over coming, mean while telling them that all is well on their phones and by the time they figured something was wrong it would be too late to do anything about it,, sound familiar?
The smartphone is an absolutely incredible piece of technology. If he doesn't want to embrace that he doesn't have to, but shaming people who do is getting out of hand.
Yes because two-year-old sitting on a tablet rather than playing with other children is awesome! Yes children coming down with type two diabetes at 3 to 5 years old because the only thing they’ve ever done is sit on their a*s in the living room with their parents and played on their tablet! It’s incredible that’s for sure but not in the way you believe !

I have a minor addiction, but if someone tells me to get off my phone, I do, or if I have company, it stays put away under my pillow. Can't say the same for a few friends of mine.
The funny part is that all of us are on our phones or computers.
SO SAD what has happened to our fellow humans...this is what disconnects us and makes us less compassionate towards others
I agree and disagree at the same time. I kinda stand in the middle of this argument. But it will sure be interesting to live in a world without phones and technology.
It's not the same as books or newspapers or even tv! Nine times out of ten the person on the phone is texting someone else and not looking things up. The person on the phone makes a choice about who they want to talk to and most of the time it's not the person in front of them! Books cannot interact. So, the book argument is meaningless. Most of us have been taught that it is rude to interrupt people when they are talking to someone, so I will stop talking as soon as the other person starts texting. I hate it and I think that the texter is telling the live person that they are S**T and do not matter.

I remember an old lady telling me once that television had ruined everything. People were not talking anymore, they were sitting around watching television. Is this any different? I guess so, as we couldn't drag our televisions around with us!! it is the escape from reality from believing that what you are actually doing in the real world can be BETTER than what the alternate reality can offer you
This is eye-opening! I wrote a blog about the use of smart phone killing relationships and cited this post as reference. Check it out http://yogawifehealthylife.com/2017/02/19/smart-phones-are-they-killing-relationships/
This is crazy really. Hars but true. It is such a great challenge how to go back to being simple and plain. By the way, this is the new fake ultrasound design from fakeababy. This is the funniest stuff I ever had and it is just so funny that it can blow your laugh away. Best for gags also.
The "Alone Together" Phenomenon. Everyday that I ride the train through Berlin, I count how many people are staring into their devices. Sadly it's most people. You're probably reading my comment from one right now.
Hey I found an app on the internet which you can use to remind a person to "get of the phone". It's called LookUpster!!

What a load of contrived bollocks. Put a book where the phone had been and would you say we're all addicted to reading? Would we be so "disconnected" if the subjects were reading books instead of communicating with others on phones? Photographically the images are very poor too. Utter shite.
Now do the same with a couple of decades ago and remove books and newspapers. Similarities?
Rather ironic that the majority of people are probably viewing these images, and commenting about how terrible it is, using a mobile device...
The dialogue doesn't match the pictures....leaves me a bit confused but great work nevertheless!
Wao! It really looks so sad. How just simple device in the picture can transform the entire meaning. I remember back in the day while practicing Photoshop, we sd to remove one person from the picture. It was amazing to see how the meaning of the picture it was still remaining. But here, looks ver incomplete and pretty sad.
I bought my first smart phone about a year ago. I lost it and got a better one. I use it many to listen to I heart radio as I travel around in my wheelchair. Once in a while I send a text. Maybe one or two a week. I don't live with it in my face. People will stop talking to each other soon I guess'
The use of cell phones is causing us to lose our real ability to communicate in person, We are loosing our social ability, we are even loosing our writing skills. Everything is now done in the shortest form possible. Parents and children pay less attention to one another, I wonder how many families site together at dinner time and talk to one another. I am also guilty of this disconnect, however if I am in the company of friends , I never take out my cell phone unless it rings. It may not been seen as a problem right now, but I wonder how many vehicle accidents have occurred because of cell phone use. These photographs show how disconnected to one another we are. The husband and wife with one another in bed, both on cell phones, saddens me greatly . I encourage everyone to use this technology. minimize its use.
Sadly, nowadays, people are so disconnected. Only we can reconnect with others, if we realize that is wrong to live through our smartphones. Also, great work :)
While I agree that there is a massive disconnect between folks these days in large part due to technological advances, I think it would have been more profound if these were photos of people ACTUALLY on their phones/iPads with the device photoshopped out. These staged photos looked just that, staged.
So, now, let's place books in the empty hands of the people in the pics and see what reactions that elicits.
