Through the photo project “lost” Anja Grundboeck aims to show the various problems and dependences of our modern society. “lost” focuses on the fact that deep life crises do not always occur and effect the obvious, but even the most successful amongst us.

Happiness, time and satisfaction are goods that can’t be purchased with all money in the world. Therefore the similarities of a homeless person and a respected businessman are sometimes far greater than one might assume. Fighting against deep-seated and often suppressed depressions, perfectly staged families live their lives in a self-destructive way through addiction, drug and alcohol abuse.

The immense pressure to appeal imposed by media and society claims many victims; people who no longer live for themselves, but others. The resulting phenomenon of insatiable satisfaction of our own ego leads to the fact that we get lost from the right and determined path. Nevertheless the wish for happiness and completeness is, beyond doubt, greater than ever.

“lost” aims to increase awareness of ones own problems; to work on trying to focus on yourself and your own happiness, but also to develop compassion towards others and to realise that human is human.

People living on the streets are often labeled right away. Yet, paradoxically, they are also among the most ‘invisible’

Getting an accurate picture of global homelessness is extremely challenging, especially because of the “hidden homeless” – those who may be residing in inadequate settlements such as slums, squatting in structures not intended for housing, couch surfing with friends and family, and those who relocate frequently. Once on the street, they become vulnerable to all forms of exploitation and even abuse.

In 2005 the last global survey was attempted by the United Nations which estimated that 100 million people were homeless worldwide. As many as 1.6 billion people lacked adequate housing

The public is under the belief that taking steroids will automatically make the user become built and muscular, which is not so

Many serious side effects and health risks are involved with using steroids. The entire body is affected by steroid use. There are others ways to train: natural bodybuilding is a bodybuilding movement with various competitions that take place for bodybuilders who abstain from performance-enhancing drugs. David Lengauer (seen in the photo) is Austria’s most famous natural bodybuilder and he’s the living example that fitness has nothing to do with steroids, but rather a healthy natural diet.

#4: Statistics show that there are at least 13 million prostitutes and up to 186 billion dollars are spent for it worldwide, with China on the top

In India, you pay 1$ for sex with an adult and 1.000$ for sex with a virgin. Women become prostitutes for many different reasons, yet several reports estimate that about 70% experienced sexual abuse in their childhood. Prostitutes often feel stigmatised by society as needing help to stop their work instead of society respecting their choice of work. Actually fewer than half of the prostitutes have considered stopping.

People who cut themselves often start in their young teens, but it can continue well into adulthood if not treated

Statistics on teen cutting are hard to come by because so few studies have been done on that subject. It can be difficult to understand why people cut themselves on purpose. Some people try to cope with the pain of strong emotions, intense pressure, or upsetting problems. The number of cases is on the rise and it’s estimated that in the US, one in every 200 girls between 13 and 19 years old cuts themselves.

According to UN sources there are up to 150 million street children in the world today (these include kids who actually live on the street but also those who have a roof above their heads, yet work, beg or roam the streets)

Chased away from home by violence, drug and alcohol abuse, the death of a parent, family breakdown, war, natural disaster or simply socio-economic collapse, many destitute children are forced to seek out a life on the streets. Scavenging, begging, hawking in the slums and polluted cities of the developing world becomes their daily routine.

Researchers and psychologists have been arguing for decades about what constitutes “workaholism,” and whether it is a disorder at all

Regardless, since the term started being thrown around in the 1970s, a mountain of evidence has piled up showing that workaholics display many of the same characteristics as those addicted to drugs or alcohol.

If cannabis is legalized at the federal level, the pharmaceutical industry would lose billions annually – even if it’s just medical marijuana

The industry’s willing to spend millions to stop that from happening. A frequent point raised by those who oppose the medical use of cannabis is that it is addictive. It’s confirmed that approximately 9% of people who use medical cannabis will develop some level of addiction. Compare this with the 11% alcohol addiction rate and then let’s talk again. Medical cannabis can be used to alleviate suffering from a wide variety of health conditions. It can stop the progression of diseases without producing debilitating side effects, and can even be part of a cure for some life threatening diseases like cancer. Still, there should be a clear distinction between medical marijuana and smoking pot for fun. While there are zero fatalities from cannabis overdose, the long-term effects should not be underestimated. Panic attacks, impaired thinking and the ability to learn and perform complex task are just a few of the side-effects when smoking pot frequently over a long period of time.

But research is increasingly clear that mainstream media does indeed contribute and that exposure to and pressure exerted by media increase body dissatisfaction and encourage eating disorders.

The constant need to be available drives many of us today

Yet social media addiction is nothing that should be taken on lightly. Researchers at Chicago University concluded that social media addiction can be stronger than an addiction to cigarettes and booze following an experiment in which they recorded the cravings of several hundred people for several weeks.

Not all street musicians are necessarily lost, but very often they are the ones who put a smile on those who are

In a world that is often depressing and confining, music is a welcome reminder of the beauty around us.
