I once had an apartment where every time I took a bath, the nicotine would seep out of the walls and ceiling. IT WAS SO DISGUSTING!

I'm a smoker but never smoke in my house. It was never acceptable to smoke in any of my family's homes, so it was a habit to go outside. It's 10°F /-12.2C and I'm currently outside smoking rn. I had smoked in one of my first homes on my own but found when we moved, that cleaning the nicotine and tar from everything we owned was disgusting, so I never did it again. We always get non smoking motel rooms also and I never smoke anywhere near them. I have tried to quit without any luck so far. So I'm doing the best I can atm.

This. My ex-inlaws each smoked 3 packs a day for 40 years in the same house (it was DISGUSTING). MIL was a complete monster clean freak, and hated walls and everything else turning yellow so, instead of trying to quit, they spent over $30k (in 1992) to install natural cedar shiplap in every room in the entire house so you couldn't see the nicotine stains. (It apparently never occurred to them to try to stop smoking.) Joke was on them, though, because that much smoking leaves a greyish residue as well from the smoke itself, which binds not only with the nicotene tar residue accumulating on everything, but also with any sap residue in the cedar shiplap. So whenever they removed a picture from the wall or moved furniture, she'd have to hire someone to clean ALL the shiplap in the entire room (so walls matched) because she hated the clean area that was protected by whatever was moved. And real cedar is much harder to clean than painted drywall. 😏

The style 10+ years ago used to be wood/earth tone colors. The black and white is just now making a comeback, but was popular in the 50s too. Bright colors like yellows and pinks were the 70s and 80s. The 90s and early 00s introduced browns and beiges.

I think it's a very common thing in the UK to have washers in the kitchen. It's a space saving thing. That one is probably a washer/dryer combo.

It's also very common in Germany in older apartment buildings (like really old ultil the early 1920s or so) . The reason for that is: in the old days most of the apartments didn't had a bathroom. It was common to have the toilet outside and also some kind of washing / laundry room with a well nearby. The kitchens where most of the time quite big. Time has changed and the apartments have been modernized. Some plumbing was installed and to have a bathroom in every flat, most of the time, they splited the kitchen in two rooms. So, they just had to rip open one wall. This was also during a time, were modern washers still weren't invented or weren't affordable for everyone. After they were affordable, people just had a limited space and tadaaa.. Washers in the kitchen... You usually have the combination of: bathtub and washer in the kitchen or: shower tub and space for the washer in the bathroom. I'm pretty sure the bathroom in the apartment from the picture is quite tiny 🤣

I THINK thats a dishwasher, I've seen a couple with windows like that. But then that begs why would they remove a dishwasher?

The windows appear to be replacement sash units. I've never seen a replacement sash unit that didn't have UV&IR-inhibitive glass.

Or sheer curtains. That's what I have in all my windows to prevent fading pictures and/or furniture.

Where else could they place it in that room?
