In the past couple years, we all spent an unprecedented amount of time in our homes. So no wonder so many people rolled up their sleeves and decided to either fix things that had been bugging them for too long to remember, or just go into full DIY renovation mode. And truth to be told, not everyone seems to have succeeded, as this previous article we published recently suggests.

But this time, we are taking a look at the incredible examples of renovation projects that completely transformed people’s homes. Whether it’s brightening up a blank room by repainting walls, redecorating an entire apartment, remodeling a living room, or creating something entirely new from scratch, like a bookcase that perfectly blends into the wall, there’s no limit to people’s persistence and creativity.

And thanks to this great online group on Reddit that’s devoted to sharing original content of “real people and their real rooms,” we have a lot of wonderful inspiration to scroll through. Upvote your favorite home renewal projects and ideas, and if you’re also working on something like this, be sure to share it in the comment section!

The dark blue-gray, with the crisp white accent, really makes the wood pop. The striations and color of the wood are gorgeous! It's a very cozy space.

Ditched the drawers and the laptop; those may be missed. I like the narrow desktop on the side, since that's often all you really need. It's pretty dark for a small room though.

It's so crisp, clean, and classy. The wood adds some warmth and texture. And you have a great backdrop to utilize many types of surface decor to change the overall feeling of the room.

There is not necessarily a fish in it. It could very well be aquascaping, which is just an aquarium decorated to look like an underwater landscape.

I still think the yellow looks cozier. Just needed to be modernised and given a lift (or stylish twist). And yeah, I agree the tiles had to go. However, I can't comprehend why everyone today seems to think white and grey are prerequisites for a modern look. Why, why, why? I've been waiting 20 years for it to go out of fashion but these colour(s), or lack thereof, never seem to die. Why is everyone so afraid of colour?

Nooooooooooo. Why does everyone have to paint everything grey. So drab (it will be remembered like the mission brown of the 70s and 80s). Gold can look beautiful if done in a modern style.

In order to find out more about common home improvement and renovation mistakes to avoid, Bored Panda reached out to Philippa Mainthe professional realtor from Tampa Bay who went viral for her brilliant and insanely funny listing description about “the worst house on the street” a while back. Philippa happily shared some very useful advice with our readers, so if you have a project on your mind, be sure to see what she had to say.

The realtor explained that there are so many errors people make when doing home renovations, but they can be summed up by the idea that it is more expensive to try to do something cheaply. “Because it will inevitably cost you more in the long run when it has to be redone in order to make it right,” she added.

My theory why apartments are often brown, beige, yellow-ish orange is to hide the nicotine so when a smoker moves out the landlord won't feel they have to clean and paint everything. I had to wash all my walls and every fixture was splattered in orange nicotine in my suite.

Another common mistake to avoid when renovating a home is hiring unlicensed professionals to do the work, and that’s very common practice among people. “I had a client go under contract on a home recently that was in the process of having a covered patio installed,” Philippa recounted.

“During inspections (before the covered roof was even complete) the home inspector discovered none of it was up to code and it could have potentially been a hazard in high wind situations. In order for it to pass county inspections and for the buyer to feel comfortable moving forward with buying the home, the sellers had to replace the entire structure. So they paid once for it to be done poorly, then paid to have the materials removed, and then paid for new materials and for a professional to properly install it.”

Philippa continued: “On top of that, the unqualified person they first hired to do the job actually ruined the main roof of the home during the installation, so they had to hire a roofer to repair their roof as well.” The realtor assured that all that could have been avoided if they had hired a professional who was licensed and insured to do that kind of job from the start.

In the "before" picture I didn't even notice that beautiful wood in the ceiling. It competed with (and IMO was overtaken by) that previous (also beautiful) wood flooring. In the "after" picture, the textures and colors of ceiling shine. I don't like the new flooring as well as I liked the old flooring, but I think the decision to eliminate the competition with the ceiling was the right one. The renovation is awesome. Love the cabinets and that island is spectacular.

Another useful tip from the realtor is knowing what to save on and what not to. “People may try to save $200 by not pulling a permit, but when a buyer discovers that when the owner goes to sell, it could cost the seller a lost sale or thousands of dollars to get it properly permitted after the fact,” she said.

“One of my biggest pet peeves is when people replace flooring but only some of it, especially when the areas are adjoining (like replacing the carpet in the living room with wood plank, but leaving the kitchen that connects to it with original 1980s ceramic tile). It makes it difficult for the new owner to properly match it (even if you leave them materials) because of the way the floor is installed, so they either have to live with the ugly tile, or pay to replace the whole floor,” Philippa explained.

Excellent job, done tastefully. I like that they’ve upcycled some of the original furniture and features instead of just buying a new room like in a number of the other entries.

What a space to make new memories. The before pic is such a representation of the 70's decor. When I look at my childhood memories they are all soaked in that color scheme. I love that each generation has their own color scheme of memories based on decor of the times.

It does brighten the place up. I am always torn about painting wood trim. I've spent a lot of time stripping bad paint jobs off beautiful old millwork, but as you've shown so well, it really changes the feel of the room.

Just getting rid of the ugly green might have been enough to lighten the mood. The trim wood's natural color seem to be a light one which would even create a Scandinavian look.

It would feel more inviting with at least a tiny dash of colour. I get that monochrome is popular, but dear god at least add a yellow cushion or something. It's a living room, not an office

Most of the change is furniture and decor items. Looks like they changed the light fixture, painted, and have new carpet, though. A lot of folks can do the first two themselves. Very few people lay their own wall-to-wall carpet, though.

This is beautiful! Just because it isn't plastered in Marvel-branded superheroes doesn't mean they aren't considering his interests and personality. I see lots of storage in the closet, a desk and a night stand we don't know the contents of. Learning to put things away when we're finished enjoying them is a valuable thing! Especially when it creates a space that children AND their parents can feel good about. WIN!

I think it's great. My 9yo would have liked it even though it's a more of a "this will last him a while"-style. They grow out of "kids style"-room pretty quick. At 9yo they are mostly into friends, sports/activities and electronics anyway, they don't need a playroom.

Not gonna lie. Had to Google Jellybean Rowhouse. Most people know what a rowhouse is, but i have never heard the expression "Jellybean" with it. Of course, the only regions you may commonly find brightly painted rowhouses in the U.S. are specific areas in the Southeast (like NOLA, Miami, South Carolina, etc.) Too bad, too, because how much fun would it be to live in a pool-colored lapped house?

As much as I like the monochrome bathroom style it’s become quite common. Which means it’s probably going to date quickly. It can be hard to choose styling that’s bang up to date but different enough to avoid cookie-cutter trends.

It looks nice, but a lot of features in this bathroom are already dated. Also, tracked doors are hard enough to keep from sticking over time when they AREN'T in a humid bathroom. In three years, these people are going to rue the day they chose that shower closure design over hinged doors. Maybe sooner, bc cleaning the framework is going to be a b*tch.

My dream bathroom would include a very large clawfoot tub, lots of philodendrons and a tile floor made with small six-sided white tiles (dime tiles?), and a small table I can move from the end of the tub up to where I can set my very large Melmac glass of ice. The toilet and sink would be a separate room.

Why do people by sofas without backs. They are sooooo uncomfortable. My daughter has them and the only way to be comfy is to lie down, which isn't very nice when you are just visiting.

3 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

it's not dumb. Yes we have a lot of those toilets here in Europe, mostly in more modern houses (nobody I personally know who's building a new house is building it the old way) and the tank etc. is build into the wall, like you have to build a little new wall to put all the stuff inside, but that you're still able to reach everything for when you have to fix it etc. :-)

I think your green tile shower is gorgeous- but if you want this bathroom redesign to work you have to fix the other distractions. 1) Too many mixed metal pieces! I see polished chrome, brushed nickel, bright gold, antique brass, and polished brass in this room. Since the glass door frame is polished chrome, I would use chrome and warm copper (which will blend with your flooring) as the only two metal choices in the room.

    Martie Saks
    Community Member
3 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

In addition tochanging out the metal components, paint the back of the linen shelf cabinet as well as the shelves a deep charcoal or very black green and add a thin wood trim to the frame of the same shelf cabinet, stained to blend with the flooring.( It can be darker). Since your wall and counter tiles have a creamy peach hue, use ivory or muted towels as opposed to white, or bright colors. Finally, add some larger plants - at least one 2 -1/2 ' floor plant in a pretty muted clay pot. There - Now your bath ensuite is transformed!

It looks like there was a small linen closet next to the sink in the before picture, when they took the picture from the entrance of the room and you can see the window. But in the after photo, they're taking the photo near the window and the closet is no longer there. So, you're a keen observer, it looks like they knocked out a whole closet 🤣

That stovetop! ❤ The whole kitchen looks great! I'm not enamored of our electric stove. I was spoiled by growing up cooking with gas, and before we moved where we are now, we had a lovely stove top, it even had a griddle in the middle, lol! But this house is electric and it's been almost five years on this electric stove top and oven. I'm considering trying to make a couple of steaks in it as it 'broils'. Fingers crossed!

Gorgeous colours! Extra points for how well Mr. Puppy goes with the new carpet.

The addition of an Eames chair and a dog makes any room look classy.

Needs a nice dark or medium warm toned color on at least one wall to give it a more cozy feel. I feel the old white-ish color is a little cold.

Maybe the owners were afraid of color. That can really stymie a good designer. After photo is big improvement.

I love that the upholstery is uniform, and yet every seat is different.

I am confused... it says "before photo included" but I don't see anything but the same room from different angles, so I am guessing they meant to say "before photo NOT included"
