30 Times People’s Renovations Made Their Homes Much Cozier, Shared In This Online Group
In the past couple years, we all spent an unprecedented amount of time in our homes. So no wonder so many people rolled up their sleeves and decided to either fix things that had been bugging them for too long to remember, or just go into full DIY renovation mode. And truth to be told, not everyone seems to have succeeded, as this previous article we published recently suggests.
But this time, we are taking a look at the incredible examples of renovation projects that completely transformed people’s homes. Whether it’s brightening up a blank room by repainting walls, redecorating an entire apartment, remodeling a living room, or creating something entirely new from scratch, like a bookcase that perfectly blends into the wall, there’s no limit to people’s persistence and creativity.
And thanks to this great online group on Reddit that’s devoted to sharing original content of “real people and their real rooms,” we have a lot of wonderful inspiration to scroll through. Upvote your favorite home renewal projects and ideas, and if you’re also working on something like this, be sure to share it in the comment section!

The After And Before Of My Teeny Tiny Studio Apartment In NYC
A place for everything, and everything in it's place. Very comfy looking.
You had to fit a lot in a small space, but were able to keep it very cosy and comfy... Good job!
Is a studio apartment the same as a bed sit ? It looks fantastic by the way!
I'm moving into a studio apt and I see some ideas I'm going to use.
The Before And The After
GREAT desk. I had a giant L shaped desk, but I gave it away because it was so huge and heavy... now I wish I still had it.
Build something like this for cheap. Much less bulk and it looks more sleek
Load More Replies...The dark blue-gray, with the crisp white accent, really makes the wood pop. The striations and color of the wood are gorgeous! It's a very cozy space.
Ditched the drawers and the laptop; those may be missed. I like the narrow desktop on the side, since that's often all you really need. It's pretty dark for a small room though.
Damn!! Nailed it. A space that small for a gaming area could not have been utilized better!
Small Bathroom Remodel. Before&after
I saved the 'after' photo to show my designer... it's definitely my style.
It's so crisp, clean, and classy. The wood adds some warmth and texture. And you have a great backdrop to utilize many types of surface decor to change the overall feeling of the room.
Load More Replies...There is not necessarily a fish in it. It could very well be aquascaping, which is just an aquarium decorated to look like an underwater landscape.
Load More Replies...I still think the yellow looks cozier. Just needed to be modernised and given a lift (or stylish twist). And yeah, I agree the tiles had to go. However, I can't comprehend why everyone today seems to think white and grey are prerequisites for a modern look. Why, why, why? I've been waiting 20 years for it to go out of fashion but these colour(s), or lack thereof, never seem to die. Why is everyone so afraid of colour?
We have the Golden Wall Syndrome in our house and every photo looks like it's from the 70s. Just painting the walls a light grey changes everything!
Nooooooooooo. Why does everyone have to paint everything grey. So drab (it will be remembered like the mission brown of the 70s and 80s). Gold can look beautiful if done in a modern style.
Load More Replies...The before is more my style, I mean, the after is very nice indeed, but I like the other one more.
In order to find out more about common home improvement and renovation mistakes to avoid, Bored Panda reached out to Philippa Main, the professional realtor from Tampa Bay who went viral for her brilliant and insanely funny listing description about “the worst house on the street” a while back. Philippa happily shared some very useful advice with our readers, so if you have a project on your mind, be sure to see what she had to say.
The realtor explained that there are so many errors people make when doing home renovations, but they can be summed up by the idea that it is more expensive to try to do something cheaply. “Because it will inevitably cost you more in the long run when it has to be redone in order to make it right,” she added.
Before And After Renovation Of My Tiny Scottish Apartment Bathroom
You transformed this space! It feels charming now rather than mundane! Well done!
Love this ! I really love that green ! I never would have picked it but I do love it and I want to paint something that color green now !
Much better use of space! Though if I was to be picky I'm not sure that the tiling is that great, you can see that the tiles aren't all flat.
Bathroom DIY Upgrade. Before And After
Astounding change after painting and changing the shape of the mirrors. The best one so far
Before And After Of My Small Apartment Kitchen. I Don't Miss The Orange! (Louth, Ireland)
My theory why apartments are often brown, beige, yellow-ish orange is to hide the nicotine so when a smoker moves out the landlord won't feel they have to clean and paint everything. I had to wash all my walls and every fixture was splattered in orange nicotine in my suite.
Or grease splatter in a kitchen. Never can get it all off
Load More Replies...I think it's a very common thing in the UK to have washers in the kitchen. It's a space saving thing. That one is probably a washer/dryer combo.
Load More Replies...I need info on the countertops! Love them and been looking for similar!
I think you can get similar at IKEA https://www.ikea.com/us/en/cat/butcher-block-countertops-46457/
Load More Replies...The before is just a dismal color...and that back splash! The gray/black/white palette in the new kitchen is much nicer. Love the wood counter tops.
Another common mistake to avoid when renovating a home is hiring unlicensed professionals to do the work, and that’s very common practice among people. “I had a client go under contract on a home recently that was in the process of having a covered patio installed,” Philippa recounted.
“During inspections (before the covered roof was even complete) the home inspector discovered none of it was up to code and it could have potentially been a hazard in high wind situations. In order for it to pass county inspections and for the buyer to feel comfortable moving forward with buying the home, the sellers had to replace the entire structure. So they paid once for it to be done poorly, then paid to have the materials removed, and then paid for new materials and for a professional to properly install it.”
Philippa continued: “On top of that, the unqualified person they first hired to do the job actually ruined the main roof of the home during the installation, so they had to hire a roofer to repair their roof as well.” The realtor assured that all that could have been avoided if they had hired a professional who was licensed and insured to do that kind of job from the start.
Living Room After/Before, Nova Scotia
Love it. You might think about putting UV blocker tint on the windows, that sunshine is going to fade everything super fast.
The windows appear to be replacement sash units. I've never seen a replacement sash unit that didn't have UV&IR-inhibitive glass.
Load More Replies...Ikr? Every surface in the old room has a different pattern/texture. I actually feel itchy looking at that fireplace wall and carpeting. The after pic is astounding!
Load More Replies...I like it but why do people put sofas facing back from windows and view? Don't understand that
I'd have left the carpet!! That's so 80s chic and I adore that vibe!

I Remodeled My Parent’s Upstate NY Kitchen During Covid. I Did A Lot Of This By Hand, Myself And This Is My First Time Ever Doing Anything Like It. I Had A Blast. Would Love To Hear Your Thoughts! Before And After(S) Below!
I love the wood floors too but I have wood floors in my kitchen and they're hard to care for. The foot traffic is intense and there are always little water spills that can damage the floor. The floors in my kitchen constantly need refinishing
Load More Replies...Wow, great job! I am getting ready to remodel my kitchen... but I have to hire someone to do it, because I have no vision... I can't figure out how to arrange all the different elements.
Shame I'm probably nowhere near you - I love doing all that kind of thing!!
Load More Replies...I really don’t care for the currently very popular center island action.
I love the island- creates more workspace when you don't have the wall space for it
Load More Replies...In the "before" picture I didn't even notice that beautiful wood in the ceiling. It competed with (and IMO was overtaken by) that previous (also beautiful) wood flooring. In the "after" picture, the textures and colors of ceiling shine. I don't like the new flooring as well as I liked the old flooring, but I think the decision to eliminate the competition with the ceiling was the right one. The renovation is awesome. Love the cabinets and that island is spectacular.
I think you work resulted in a kitchen that is much better to work in, provides far more storage and is bright. I'd feel happy working here!
You are a terrible person. I bet your house isn't half as nice as this one. Try being nice it's not hard
Load More Replies...Another useful tip from the realtor is knowing what to save on and what not to. “People may try to save $200 by not pulling a permit, but when a buyer discovers that when the owner goes to sell, it could cost the seller a lost sale or thousands of dollars to get it properly permitted after the fact,” she said.
“One of my biggest pet peeves is when people replace flooring but only some of it, especially when the areas are adjoining (like replacing the carpet in the living room with wood plank, but leaving the kitchen that connects to it with original 1980s ceramic tile). It makes it difficult for the new owner to properly match it (even if you leave them materials) because of the way the floor is installed, so they either have to live with the ugly tile, or pay to replace the whole floor,” Philippa explained.
A Before And After Ft. A Poor Man's Backsplash - Done While Being Stuck At Home. Detroit, Mi
This is a very nice update, something to be proud of. I love the richness of the new colours!
All the changes are nice. I love the color of the lower cabinets, and the new floor is to die for!
Should have taken the green tiles up to the cabinet, why leave the space empty
Living Room Before & After
It's fabulous! I've seen this one dozens of times but never get tired of it.
Load More Replies...What a space to make new memories. The before pic is such a representation of the 70's decor. When I look at my childhood memories they are all soaked in that color scheme. I love that each generation has their own color scheme of memories based on decor of the times.
This room was automatically made more cozy because of the dog on the couch
The husband says after the fact, "I just told her I wanted a bigger TV."
It definitely looks much better but with smaller furniture I think it would be the best.
Above Pic Is Before We Moved Into Our New House In Ohio.... Bottom Pic Is After A Solid Paint Job!! Feels So Much More Open And Airy Now And I Love It
It does brighten the place up. I am always torn about painting wood trim. I've spent a lot of time stripping bad paint jobs off beautiful old millwork, but as you've shown so well, it really changes the feel of the room.
Just getting rid of the ugly green might have been enough to lighten the mood. The trim wood's natural color seem to be a light one which would even create a Scandinavian look.
Load More Replies...Gorgeous. If it were mine I'd turn the sofa round & see that beautiful view forever.
The corner of the room that the couch is facing has a TV in it. -- just saying.
Load More Replies...Bedroom Makeover For My 9 Year Old Son. Denver, Co. After vs. Before
This doesn't really look like a child's bedroom. More like a 30 year olds.
Wow, the room looked really depressing before. The poor kid didn't even have a real bed. But while the "after" looks stylish I think it's a strange choice for a nine-year-old. A dead animal head above the bed? Really?
Most 9 yo boys I know would be ecstatic to have a "dead animal" skull in their room.
Load More Replies...This will look stylish and hip for years to come. I love to see kids rooms that are timeless enough to grow with a kid right up thru high school.
Can i just say that i hate open closets? Who thought that this should become a trend?
It is not an open closet, I'm from Colorado too. The closet doors are open.
Load More Replies...Ok now although it looks good— I wish they would specify how much money they spent. Nothing here looks DIY.
Most of the change is furniture and decor items. Looks like they changed the light fixture, painted, and have new carpet, though. A lot of folks can do the first two themselves. Very few people lay their own wall-to-wall carpet, though.
Load More Replies...This is beautiful! Just because it isn't plastered in Marvel-branded superheroes doesn't mean they aren't considering his interests and personality. I see lots of storage in the closet, a desk and a night stand we don't know the contents of. Learning to put things away when we're finished enjoying them is a valuable thing! Especially when it creates a space that children AND their parents can feel good about. WIN!
I think it's great. My 9yo would have liked it even though it's a more of a "this will last him a while"-style. They grow out of "kids style"-room pretty quick. At 9yo they are mostly into friends, sports/activities and electronics anyway, they don't need a playroom.
Dull Stairway, Before And After. Scotland, UK
That really brightened things up, didn't it? Going upstairs looks like a good thing now!
Right! I would have preferred just wood stairs. I could never maintain white stairs 🤣
Load More Replies...Wait wtf how did they turn the down stairway into an up stairway?
Guys post more pics of your European architecture. In Canada most of our homes are so box like, and lacking the interesting multi use spaces you all enjoy. It is fascinating to me. Ps this color is so energizing in a soft Spring first leaf of the year way.

Load More Replies...Now this is the type of change I wanted to see in this thread! Completely new look, no walls were moved, room wasn't completely renovated. Great job!
You nailed the title of this thread. Simple, but packed a visual punch Well done?
Not gonna lie. Had to Google Jellybean Rowhouse. Most people know what a rowhouse is, but i have never heard the expression "Jellybean" with it. Of course, the only regions you may commonly find brightly painted rowhouses in the U.S. are specific areas in the Southeast (like NOLA, Miami, South Carolina, etc.) Too bad, too, because how much fun would it be to live in a pool-colored lapped house?
Your sense of design, use of space and light is wonderful! Lovely job!
Before And After Of Lake Side Cottage In Ontario, Canada.
Really captured that coastal vibe with the white and blue. Perfect for lakeside living!

AMAZING deserves the highest score and I'm more than sure that it would have gotten it had this pic been posted at the beginning of the article
Hexagons Are The Bestagons. Bathroom Remodel In San José, Ca.
As much as I like the monochrome bathroom style it’s become quite common. Which means it’s probably going to date quickly. It can be hard to choose styling that’s bang up to date but different enough to avoid cookie-cutter trends.
Lmao why does anyone care what other people think about their stylistic choices of their home?
Load More Replies...Definitely better than the before. Would love to see a bit more colour incorporated into the design though.
It looks nice, but a lot of features in this bathroom are already dated. Also, tracked doors are hard enough to keep from sticking over time when they AREN'T in a humid bathroom. In three years, these people are going to rue the day they chose that shower closure design over hinged doors. Maybe sooner, bc cleaning the framework is going to be a b*tch.

My dream bathroom would include a very large clawfoot tub, lots of philodendrons and a tile floor made with small six-sided white tiles (dime tiles?), and a small table I can move from the end of the tub up to where I can set my very large Melmac glass of ice. The toilet and sink would be a separate room.

Dumb American question here: Is the toilet tank built into the wall/ledge thing? It looks much nicer than American toilets.
it's not dumb. Yes we have a lot of those toilets here in Europe, mostly in more modern houses (nobody I personally know who's building a new house is building it the old way) and the tank etc. is build into the wall, like you have to build a little new wall to put all the stuff inside, but that you're still able to reach everything for when you have to fix it etc. :-)
Load More Replies...Very "70's" tiles before. Love the herringbone, as GoddessOdd stated.
I think your green tile shower is gorgeous- but if you want this bathroom redesign to work you have to fix the other distractions. 1) Too many mixed metal pieces! I see polished chrome, brushed nickel, bright gold, antique brass, and polished brass in this room. Since the glass door frame is polished chrome, I would use chrome and warm copper (which will blend with your flooring) as the only two metal choices in the room.
In addition tochanging out the metal components, paint the back of the linen shelf cabinet as well as the shelves a deep charcoal or very black green and add a thin wood trim to the frame of the same shelf cabinet, stained to blend with the flooring.( It can be darker). Since your wall and counter tiles have a creamy peach hue, use ivory or muted towels as opposed to white, or bright colors. Finally, add some larger plants - at least one 2 -1/2 ' floor plant in a pretty muted clay pot. There - Now your bath ensuite is transformed!

Also those make-overs are great to fabulous. But it gave me some thinking... in the 90s blue was the color to go and now... it's obsolete. I'm excited to see what of those styles simply remain timeless and which won't. However, personally, I always favored the "dark" libery still or (how it's called in my country) the colonial style. Those colors and massive dark wooden furniture needs to fit your place though.

Loved the before and the after! This is by FAR more interesting and creative than ANYTHING posted above. All that was largely a snooze fest.
