Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. When it comes to movies, your absolute favorites might be the ones that your partner swears they’ll never, ever watch again. And it can be especially hard to agree with someone else on how you feel about a comedy. Some prefer slapstick, while others find raunchy movies to be hysterical. But one voice in the comedy world that’s certainly an acquired taste is Amy Schumer.

That’s why Shabaz Ali recently shared a video on TikTok calling out Netflix for claiming that Amy Schumer’s new film, Kinda Pregnant, is the most popular movie in the U.K. at the moment. Below, you’ll find Shabaz’s post, as well as a conversation between him and Bored Panda.

“I’ve definitely questioned if they just put anything to promote it”

To find out what inspired this TikTok in the first place, we got in touch with Shabaz via email. “I do a weekly review of movies or TV recommendations, so this week, I thought I’d do that video,” he shared.

We also wanted to find out if he’s ever watched any of Amy Schumer’s other films. “I’ve seen some of her stand-up clips and movies,” Shabaz noted. “They’re not good.”

So is this the first time he’s ever been skeptical of Netflix’s Top 10 list? “I have mentioned it before when I’ve watched a TV show or movie, and it’s been in the top 10 and it’s been terrible. I’ve said, ‘How is this Number 1?’ I can’t say for sure, but I’ve definitely questioned if they just put anything to promote it.”

We were also curious about what Shabaz thought of the responses to his post. “Some of the replies were funny, and it’s always good to know that you’re not the only one thinking it or you’re not going crazy.”

Finally, he wanted to clarify that he’s not totally against the streaming platform. “I do enjoy Netflix, but with them increasing prices and then promoting naff things to the top… I’m a bit miffed,” he told Bored Panda.

Many critics pointed out that the movie simply just isn’t funny

Amy Schumer is an actor, comedian, writer and producer who has been a household name for the last 15 or so years. She began gaining mainstream popularity in 2007 when she earned fourth place in the NBC reality show Last Comic Standing. Since then, she’s released several stand-up comedy specials and even won a prime-time Emmy Award for her comedy show Inside Amy Schumer in 2015.

In 2015, she also began starring in movies, with Trainwreck being her first big hit. Schumer also released a memoir, The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo, in 2016 and has since starred in a documentary series about her pregnancy, Expecting Amy, and co-hosted the 2022 Academy Awards. And most recently, she wrote, produced and starred in the 2025 Netflix film Kinda Pregnant.

It currently has a 28% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 4.9 out of 10 on IMDb. The film follows the story of Lainy, a teacher who finds herself jealous of her friends and colleagues, who all seem to be pregnant at the same time. So she decides to steal a fake pregnancy belly and pretend to be an expectant mother as well.

Now, the film has not received rave reviews. Adrian Horton at The Guardian called the film “kinda disappointing” and gave it two stars out of five. Fran Hoepfner at Vulture wrote a piece titled Kinda Pregnant Is Kinda Boring. And Helen O’Hara at Empire gave the movie two stars out of ten and wrote, “It all just feels a bit pointless.”

Apparently, the biggest issue many viewers have with the film is that it’s simply not funny. “It doesn’t help that the 100-minute film has the stale flavor of Netflix content: overlit, undercooked, checking off boxes by sticking a bunch of funny people together and hoping for the best,” Horton writes.

Amy Schumer has been a controversial figure in the entertainment industry for years

O’Hara also noted that the movie is “deeply misconceived and steadily unfunny,” pointing out that it feels longer than it actually is. “A few moments of emotional honesty between mothers are the only bits worth watching, but they’re too scant to save this mess,” she writes in her review.

Unfortunately for Schumer, she’s been a controversial figure for years. So Shabaz probably wasn’t wrong in his assumption that many Netflix viewers wouldn’t be interested in watching her latest film.

Cracked recently shared a piece breaking down why many audiences don’t resonate with Schumer, and they first noted that she’s not afraid to share her political views. In fact, about 200 people walked out of one of her shows in Florida in 2016 after she ranted about how much she doesn’t like Trump. Meanwhile, she’s recently been vocal about her support for Israel.

Schumer has also been accused of stealing jokes by several other female comedians, including Kathleen Madigan, Wendy Liebman and Tammy Pescatelli. And through it all, Schumer has maintained quite a bit of confidence.

In response to critics, she made a post on Instagram in 2023 claiming that she was “the most successful female comedian of all time.” Viewers immediately corrected her by sharing names of some of their favorite women in comedy, and Schumer eventually deleted the post.

We’ll never know for sure if Netflix is manipulating their Top 10 list or if Amy Schumer has more fans around the globe than many of us realized, but it’s clear that many viewers are skeptical. Feel free to share your thoughts on this situation down below, pandas.
