I believe many people feel uncomfortable when a random person comes up to them and requests something. In general, it’s not a pleasant feeling seeing that somebody you don’t know is coming your way, especially when you are alone, there are no people around and you are basically in the forest. Well, if they need help with something (like directions, food, etc.), it’s one thing, of course, if they are not rude. However, to insist on getting in your car because a storm is coming and they can’t be caught in it – it’s a bit suspicious.

A few days ago, a woman shared her not-so-pleasant encounter with a stranger to one community. She was wondering if it was the wrong move to decline to drive a creepy woman home after she insisted due to the upcoming storm. The story caught a lot of attention and in 4 days it had over 21K upvotes and 3.4K comments.
To begin with, the woman begins by saying that she is an avid hiker. Recently, as she was just coming off the trail, a strange older woman came straight to her. Then, without any introduction or greeting, the woman came close to the hiker, pointing to her car and asking if it was hers. The OP also added that the place where she met this woman is almost impossible to reach without driving.
Following this, after the stranger made sure that the car was the hiker’s, she just stated that she had to go home before the storm started. No questions asked, just facts. The author says that the interaction was weird, to say the least, as she even tried opening the car’s doors. Then followed the same words as before, that a storm was coming, she needed to get home and couldn’t be caught in the storm.
However, the author explained that she felt uncomfortable having a stranger in her car. After hearing this, the stranger just stared at her, anger dropped from her face and she went fully silent. The OP shared that she still felt uncomfortable and a little bit scared, but she just got in her car all shaken up and went home. Once she got back into cell rage, she called fire and rescue so that they would send somebody.
The author received the ‘Not the A-hole’ badge. “Yeah, that whole situation didn’t sound or feel safe. Better to let a professional handle it,” one user wrote. “You have to listen to your gut instinct,” another added. Many people agreed and assured the OP that she did the right thing: “Who knows where she would have had you drop her off or who would have been waiting there. I’m glad you listened to your gut and called for help.”

Moreover, Bored Panda got in touch with the author of the story who kindly agreed to share more insights regarding the encounter.
“I felt somewhat threatened when the woman became frustrated and angry,” she started. “I say somewhat as I am an athletic person and can hold my own if it really comes to it, but I am not confrontational at all. To be honest the whole encounter was very unsettling and triggered my fear response in a way that is hard to explain,” the woman emphasized.
Speaking about the decision to contact fire and rescue, the hiker says that “It’s always a good idea to call for help when someone could be in danger and you’re not in a position to help them. I specifically didn’t call the police because of their poor record dealing with people who are mentally unwell.”
“Looking back I don’t think I would have done anything differently- the responses I got from Redditors seem to resoundingly imply that if I stuck around any longer I would have been either murdered or possessed!” the woman shared. “I got many responses suggesting that the woman I encountered was a spirit from another world. While it is probably much more likely that she was just suffering some kind of episode, I am a spiritual person and am not quick to dismiss the otherworldly option.”
“While she seemed corporeal enough, the whole thing was extremely strange and left me with a feeling of extreme discomfort. Either way- roadside ghost or person in crisis- I feel now that I made the right decision,” the hiker shared with Bored Panda. And finally, she mentioned that it was really surprising to get so many reactions from the folks online. “Honestly a little overwhelming.”

She is certainly not the a-hole. The woman could have politely asked for a ride, but she did not. She became demanding and seemed strange, so OP used her gut instincts and didn't allow this strange woman in her car. I understand being nervous about being caught in a storm, but there are appropriate ways to talk to people. She didn't just leave the woman, she called fire and rescue, so she did help the lady. If the woman had come up to her and talked to her appropriately, she may have given her a ride.
Holy f*****g s**t, that's creepy! Yeah, I'm a woman, and I like to hike. 99% of the time everything is fine. Every now and then, you run into creeps. If not around others, it's best to be friendly. Don't do anything that might set them off...but keep mace in hand and get to a crowded area asap. Don't go with them elsewhere. Don't stay with them longer than necessary. Don't let them "take a closer look" at any camera, binoculars, water bottle, etc. And if they try to get in your car, be prepared to mace them. Put your safety above their feelings.
Just an FYI, Mace is illegal in most of Australia. So it's not a viable option to carry around.

First and foremost, OP did the right thing by denying this stranger a ride. Now, I'm not one to be nasty to those in need, but when your danger alert radar is going off the charts, best thing to do is decline and try to help in another way. Second point, if they think that bad weather is justification for entitlement, sorry not sorry, but you are gonna be left out in the storm if I have anything to say about it. Best I will do is call emergency services, but you ain't getting in my car just like that.
Please tell me I’m not the only one thinking murder ghost?
I was thinking more mentally unwell. I know a few who would act like this, some in my family.

How could the poster even think she was an AH after she went through the trouble of telling us how afraid she was of this stranger??
this seems like it was a setup for some kindof bad thing. However, and this one is important. Is someone is trying to make me do somthing for them, and they come with entitlement and an attitude, even if there is likely no threat at all, there is not way I would do anything for them

similar happened to me just last week. i was finishing work late, on the way home stopped at a servo for a hot cuppa, it was near midnight. parked the car, after i got out and locked car, 3 blokes came out of the dark asking me if i could drop them off down the road as it was cold to walk. my "radar" went off, told them lemme get my coffee first, they said they will wait at my car. now all this was seen by the attendant via security cam, and seeing me visibly shaken, asked if he should call the cops and i said yes please. one of them came up and asked what was wrong, attendant said the coffee machine was halfway self cleaning and needed a few more minutes. he nodded and went back to my car, all the while we were observing them thru the camera. cops came, found that one of them had a garrot and knives in his bomber jacket.

Yeah she's definitely NTA. She did exactly the thing I would've done in that situation.
In the campfire version she gets back to civilization and learns an old woman had died in a storm there EXACTLY one year before.
A lot of young women go missing like that. You trusted your instincts. Good for you.
Are we sure the woman was even human? This sounds like the perfect lead in to a demonic horror story.
I mean I work with people with dementia. So I would have gaged if she was just rude or if there was an impairment there. If none then I would have prob done the same tbh.
She probably broke down or got into a fight with someone that left her (which I am leaning towards based on the description of her), but regardless, that's is NOT the way to try and get a ride somewhere

How hard is it to ask for a ride politely? How rude and entitled! I wouldn't have given her a ride either. No way. Definitely NTA.
She didn’t sound rude and entitled. She sounded as if she had something wrong with her, perhaps dementia or Alzheimer’s - the woman kept repeating the same phrases and did not seem engaged with reality. I’m not saying OP should have let her into her car, but that I don’t think the woman 100% was “just” “rude and entitled”.
