‘House Of Horrors’ Mom Of 16 Appears In Court, Sparks Pregnancy Speculation

There’s already been no shortage of disturbing details in the case surrounding Elizabeth Siders, the Ohio mother of 16 children whose family home was described by authorities as a “house of horrors.” From the devastating circumstances surrounding the discovery of her children and the deplorable conditions in which they were living to the multiple serious charges she now faces, the case has continued to raise difficult questions.

With so many troubling details emerging since the children were discovered, attention has focused not only on what authorities found inside the family home, but also on the adults at the center of the case. But it seems another layer of intrigue may have emerged following Siders’ latest court appearance—one that has left people wondering about an unexpected detail.

She pleaded not guilty to all of them in court on Wednesday, but one detail sparked unexpected speculation

Siders, 34, appeared in Vinton County Court on Wednesday to face charges tied to two separate cases—including 19 counts of child endangerment in the case involving her children and additional charges in a separate case involving a minor in her care in 2022. She pleaded not guilty to all of them.

But while the focus of the hearing was on those serious allegations, it was something else that caught people’s attention: Siders appeared to be cradling what looked like a baby bump.

Footage from the hearing shared by WBNS 10TV showed Siders entering the courtroom in orange prison clothing, without handcuffs, with her hands resting over her belly. It was a detail that did not go unnoticed, prompting a reporter to ask her attorney, Thomas Stolly, whether she was pregnant.

“I can’t address that at this time,” Stolly said.

The attorney couldn’t answer the question, but addressed Siders’ pregnancy history in court

While Stolly declined to confirm or deny whether Siders was pregnant, he did offer some context about her history of pregnancy and childbirth, telling the court: “We have an individual in Elizabeth who was married at age 15, who has essentially been pregnant for the better part of two decades.”

He said Siders “has never fully gone through any postpartum period” and hasn’t received medical care he considered appropriate for someone who’s had 16 to 18 children. Stolly said he believed those circumstances had taken a toll on her mental health and contributed to his concerns about whether she was competent to stand trial.

“I have competency concerns when it comes to my client,” he explained. “Part of the reason that I raise these competency concerns were, when we’re discussing these charges, we’re discussing the implications—the legal impact of serious felony charges like this—I’m not sure that she’s fully understanding the impact.”

A competency evaluation was granted last month, with the results still pending.

Meanwhile, Siders’ bond has climbed from $250,000 to $550,000, and she has been barred from contacting her husband and the alleged victims. Her 16 children remain in state custody, although Stolly told the court that his client continues to ask to see them.

The pregnancy speculation comes amid a disturbing case

The speculation surrounding Siders’ apparent baby bump comes against the backdrop of an already disturbing case that has drawn national attention.

Siders and her husband, Gary Siders Jr., were arrested in June alongside his parents, Gary Siders Sr. and Christina Siders, after authorities discovered their 16 children living in what the Ohio Attorney General called “disgusting” and “deplorable” conditions.

The children, who ranged in age from around 20 months to 18 years, were reportedly living in a dilapidated home and had been confined to a 12-by-12-foot room littered with feces for much of four years.

Authorities described the children as appearing “almost feral.” As The Guardian reported, “They did not attend school, and some were unable to speak at all. The eldest was developmentally disabled and could not even spell her name.”

Siders and her husband were also indicted on August 21 in a separate case involving another minor who was between 13 and 16 years old in 2022. The child was not one of Siders’ own, but was in her care at the time. Siders pleaded not guilty to those charges as well during Wednesday’s hearing.

While there may still be more questions than answers surrounding Siders and her latest court appearance, the results of her competency evaluation could help determine what happens next in the case. In Ohio, a defendant generally needs to be able to understand what’s happening in court and assist with their own defense to be considered competent to stand trial. If they’re found incompetent, the court can order treatment to help restore their competency before the case can move forward.

And as for the speculation surrounding Siders’ apparent baby bump, for now, that remains just that.
