Why can't you use lumber like the rest of the house to elevate it off the ground? This was built to be a Yaga house.

I'd like to think that this house messes with the inhabitants and moves around to other places while they're sleeping.

This is called a "Stabbur" in Norwegian. They were built to store food and other things at elevation away from animals and scavengers.

They arrived in the cottage a week before. His wife had been skeptical of living there, as it was perched atop a mountain, pure isolation. But both he and his daughter were excited to get away from the hustle and bustle of city and spend a few weeks on a mountain where the closet civilization was a hundred miles away in every direction. His wife questioned his sanity. Every morning he swore he saw the icicles spelling out KILL on the window. After he lashed out at them both with a kitchen knife, they locked him in the pantry. Every night they heard him mumbling “the ice made me do it, the ice made me do it” to the point of driving them both to the brink of insanity. Rumor has it that he is still in that pantry atop the mountain, and if you were to find yourself in that cottage, the ice would make you do it as well. (I’ve begun writing horror as a hobby, tell me what you think!)

We all find different things scary. Some of us couldn’t stand being in the same room as a clown, while others might consider having to touch a snake their worst nightmare. But aside from the obvious things that are widely considered scary, such as ghosts and the dark, there are also many things that sneak up on us and are unexpectedly pretty frightening. The Oddly Terrifying subreddit is a catalog of all of those things that are “not the ordinary type of terrifying,” but still freak us out.

The community has amassed an impressive 2.6 million members since its creation a decade ago, and among all of the unsettling posts people share there are plenty of strange pics from real life homes. Creepy basements, disturbing ice formations, snake skin found inside homes and fungus that looks like toes all come together to create the perfect list of strange items that might make homeowners assume their houses are haunted. And according to evolutionary psychologist Frank T. McAndrew, there’s a simple reason why we find haunted houses to be so frightening.

“From a psychological point of view, the standard features of haunted houses trigger feelings of dread because they push buttons in our brains that evolved long before houses even existed,” McAndrew writes for The Conversation. “These alarm buttons warn us of potential danger and motivate us to proceed with caution.” Haunted houses aren’t scary because they are actually posing a threat to us, but we find them frightening because we can’t actually determine whether they’re threatening or not. “This ambivalence leaves you frozen in place, wallowing in unease,” McAndrew explains.

We don’t want to overreact by running out of the house screaming, but we do sense danger, so it can be difficult to ignore our intuition and continue towards it if we’re going to later regret it. But we can often feel the same way in our own homes too, when we stumble upon something that doesn’t seem quite right. We don’t want to freak out because we know, logically, that our home should be the safest place in the world. However, when you find something oddly terrifying, it can be hard to shake the feeling that someone or something is out to get you.

We lived in a house onetime that had a sad history, a teenage suicide. This was a large house but the washer and dryer was in the garage. My dog would follow me to the door to the garage and would not ever enter the garage. Found out later that the teenager had died in the garage.

There’s an odor that your dog’s nose picks up at that point, which is why they won’t go any further. Might be a good idea to get it checked out. Some toxic gases are odorless, at least to humans. Same goes for odors given off by insect infestations, rodent infestations, other kinds of infestations and contaminants. If you’re in the UK or a European country that was involved in two world wars, your dog might be picking up the scent of unexploded ordnance buried deep under your home’s foundation. Then there’s the creepier alternative of a body buried under the basement floor. Get it all checked out.

There are also certain types of homes that we find particularly terrifying, and for some reason, Victorian homes always fit the bill. What is it about these houses that are gorgeous during the daytime that seem absolutely menacing and fear-inducing once the sun goes down? Well, according to Rachel Kurzius at The Washington Post, there are a variety of factors contributing to the reputation Victorian homes have, including pop culture and architecture. When it comes to the construction of these homes, Kurzius notes that they’re “as far from an open floor plan as a house can get.” There are typically many rooms, many doors and long, narrow hallways. Ample opportunities for jump scares and creaking doors!

Lauren Kelsey, production designer for the Netflix thriller The Midnight Club, shared with The Washington Post how her set utilized “long hallways and creepy hallways” with big round arches with enough space for characters to hide behind them. Building materials used during the Victorian era also can’t help but give off a macabre feel, Kurzius noted, pointing out the use of dark wood. “The era’s characteristic stained glass and thick draperies added to the ominous vibe, but they actually had a utilitarian purpose, too: They protected elaborate furniture and decor from the sun. In urban dwellings, the curtains helped insulate interiors from street odors,” she explained.

Yeah and it's sad to see people here perpetuating myths about snakes. Most snakes are shy and avoid humans, a snake that big would be easy to spot indoors so you wouldn't step on it. And if it does bother someone you can probably get it released outdoors. They're an important part of the ecosystem!

If it's that big, it's most likely a nope rope and not a danger noodle. What I would be concerned about is what is inside the house for it to eat.

Depends on the kind of snake. A Black Rat Snake would be pretty much the only snake allowed to come and go from my attic, as it’s not venomous and would control the rodent population up there. I just wouldn’t want it to establish a nest and have babies up there. Snek, my attic can be the job site you commute to. It is not to become your home. Do not move your family in. Deal?

Note how the scutes (the belly scales) are mainly flat with a sharp upturn at the ends. As it happens, this *is* a rat snake.

Or just cover it, and take the entire bucket far far away from your house and well into the wilderness. Make sure to place them in a safe, covered area so they’re not immediately set upon by predators before they can get acclimated to their new home. Then uncover the bucket and run. Fast.

Could be an old outhouse, septic tank, foundation, or any other sort of structure. A depression in the ground, does not mean there's a body.

    Kira Okah

Considering the prevalence of septic tanks around here, this is likely from an old percolation test to see if a septic system could be implemented.

Better hope it's the cops who come back and not the person who dug the hole. And that they don't announce themselves by coming up behind you and whispering, 'I've been waiting for you to come and see this... I made it just for you...' right in your ear.

A lot of present and past farmland has old, and often forgotten and overgrown, family burial plots on them. It’s possible this was a part of one, but the wooden cross, wooden coffin (distinctive shape of the depression in the ground), and body have long ago disintegrated, and the bones spread far and wide by animals. Sad it was abandoned and forgotten long enough for it to happen. OR it’s a dump site for a murder committed so long ago all the evidence except for the depression in the ground, as well as the perpetrator(s), are long gone now. Also sad the victim and their loved ones never got justice and closure.

And if you ask Adam Lowenstein, author of Horror Film and Otherness, he’ll tell you that Victorian houses don’t age well. "The image of the haunted Victorian house probably has real reference in all kinds of American neighborhoods where these ornate houses lost their wealthy tenants and became sort of neglected, derelict houses that looked haunted because they weren’t being taken care of," he told The Washington Post.

Krystal D’Costa at Scientific American has even explored the topic of creepy Victorian houses, and she points out that Victorian houses were perceived as gross symbols of wealth during the latter part of the 19th century in the United States. Following the Civil War, the Southern states were devastated economically, and the memories of those they lost in the war weighed heavily on them. So when wealthy Northerners lived in massive Victorian homes, these houses were seen as tone deaf and offensive.

ATM I feel grateful and spoiled for the places I lived growing up. Nothing 'rich' but - a farm, a house with a yard, younger years various apartments but one overlooked the sea / short walk to the beach, another had an olympic sized swimming pool, one at least had a small yard. And before all that a house in California at a time when it was safe for little kids to play around the neighborhood and we had a huge field to play / ride bikes. My entire life was "not this".

pentagrams and pentacles have a fascinating history. at some point, the pentacle (star w no circle) was a christian symbol! i am trying to be a witch/wiccan so i use this as a symbol of protection. satanism isn’t really supposed to be associated with the pentagram.

“Critics such as Hamlin Talbot decried the [Victorian] style as a blight upon the American landscape, labeling them ‘wooden monstrosities,’” D’Costa explained. “This sentiment grew into the 1920s, following the aftermath of WWI where numerous disillusioned veterans and their families saw things in a new light: The cost of technological and economical advancement was dirty factories and poorly made mass produced goods. The world had become a corrupt, dirty place, and Victorian-style houses were a physical manifestation of this stain; they represented the persistence of corruption and thoughtlessness that was thought to have originated in the Gilded Age. Where they were once a symbol of material wealth, these homes were now a weight on the progression of the American soul.”

There appears to be a distinct lack of fire doors on that corridor. You don't get them like that in the UK, as there has to a be a fire door every so many metres.

There was then a movement attempting to portray Victorian homes as creepy, unsettling and unwelcoming, and it seemed to work. Artist Charles Burchfield released House of Mystery, which depicted a “dark and unsettling” home through pictures, and many critics agreed that it looks “ghostly and murderous.” In 1925, Edward Hopper continued the trend by releasing House by the Railroad, which looked uninviting, despite the elaborate architectural style it had. “Critics found it desolate, ominous, inhuman, and haunted--responses that echoed the perception of the Victorian legacy overall,” D’Costa continued. So it seems like Victorian homes may be more likely than many others to wind up on lists like this!

Spiders. Cool concept ... centralized propellation and climbing apparutus, elegantly synced when walking, using hydraulic pressure to stretch legs, and muscles only to fold, makes their motion look weird to us. Silkworms most likely. They cover the entire surface so they can safely eat leaves, branches and bark without being interrupted or eaten themselves by birds. They literally tent the surface, lol. They've done this to my one mulberry tree a few times and most years I have at least a couple other trees on the property that look like this.

Personally, I would have guessed bird-cherry ermine, but the bark of the European bird cherry tree is smoother than in the picture. We call trees infested with them ghost trees. The caterpillars fall from the trees and the objects left underneath also get a ghostly gauze on them. I've seen benches and children's toys covered in rather eerie white gauze. The tree also usually survives it without any permanent damage.

Star of David = six points, so there's one. The text looks possibly Arabic or Persian. So likely Kabbalah stuff.

This note is upside down. The writing is based on the Arabic alphabet, but I cannot determine the language. Some elements of the letters look more Farsi to me than Arabic (but not quite Urdu? Pashto?) I know nothing about folk superstitions of the North African to Central/South Asian regions [where this alphabet was/is used by many languages]. This certainly _looks_ like a non-mainstream [not mainstream Judaism, Christianity, or Islam] writing/ enchantment/ incantation/ instructions for a ritual. Maybe Islamic or Jewish (North African/Sephardi) mysticism? Come on Bored Panda community. Somebody out there hast to recognize this!

Preeetty sure they should have trimmed all the branches off that thing, especially as they’ve guaranteed it’ll fall on the fence and/or house at this point. A tree like that, you take down in sections if it’s leaning a dangerous direction.

    Jason
    Community Member
2 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

So dangerous. Cut is so wrong on multiple levels I would probably do some dumb s***. Like get the tree rope go around another tree and tie to the tractor away from the house and fence. It's probably going to barber chair or whatever with that cut too. Maybe flatten the bottom front cut and come through the back but it's so low. Seems dangerous overall. No expert though

    Ken Beattie

2 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

It looks to me like there is a partial horizontal cut on the left. So they probably thought they were doing the right thing. Namely make a lower cut on the side in the direction you want it to fall (the cut on the right). Then they started the cut on the left but the weight of the branches pulled the tree towards the fence. Should have cut the branches on the left side off before doing either cut at the base.

The scariest thing about this is someone not going into an important part of their house - you need to know where your sump pump is and that it is functioning, plus have access in case it fails. Terrifying to think an adult isn't handling those things.

I Don’t Know If This Counts, But I Don’t Know Where Else To Turn…these Sealed Buckets Of Rotten Meat In My Yard

The basement freezer lost power for a week or so. My mother-in-law (who is awesome, and whose meat it mostly was) cleaned it out and the house reeked for a day or so…it finally smells okay inside. All the food went in these buckets and I closed them with a rubber mallet. That was last night. Meant to take care of them today but they are…well you can see. The lids are normally flat. Two of them are just filled with blood.
