No, they emit the most soot and smoke out of any power station. Burning coal produces smoke and there is no way to stop that

Well, I wouldn't want to use unkind words about someone who is/was most probably ill. "Hoarder" may seem "kinder" than some other words that might come to one's mind, but there isn't even any photographic evidence here of whether it is an accurate description in this case. Hoarding and squalor don't always go together.

My husband and I did that in 2005-2006. Yes, the bathroom was that bad. The house had not been maintained since 1964. It was full to countertops with trash and unopened mailorder goods. It cleaned up real nice. 8 months of hard work I still have that house as a sweet rental.

Mark Smallman Deep Fryers are very challenging to clean, especially if the restaurant is open 24/7 and you can't close the kitchen to do the cleaning. I have worked at a restaurant where I had to clean the deep fryer and that was awful. I was not able to get it clean like in this picture so I would be interested to know what 'magic trick' the person used to make the fryer look like new.

I can't remember where I heard it ( probably NPR) but it takes about 3 hours to clean them, and if you miss a step you have to start over again. I don't eat fast food but I found this to be such a good example of bad design that I kept that info

I use to do this at a little quick shop I worked at, scrubbed the grill until it shined, broke down the drink machines (which NO ONE DOES) and soaked the little pieces in diluted bleach mixture, etc. You would not believe how nasty a fountain drink machine is if its not broken down regularly. I loved keeping that place clean!

While I totally understand, there's truth to what is said about them making potatoes taste better. There are certain things that should not be washed but "seasoned". This is done with tea pots, cast iron, and there are very famous restaurants that have literally reused the same frypans/fryers, smokers, and even grease for decades. It's a little like aging whiskey in smoked barrels, then using the barrels over and over. The would becomes seasoned and imparts flavors.

Yuck, on the left side. Awesome, on the right side. I love the beauty of the wood and the grain is gorgeous. Patina is okay on some things, this is not one of them. Keep cleaning. Afterward, put some sort of wood sealer on it to protect it from the elements. It won't protect it forever, but it will help. Then, about once a month, or every other month, wash it with some wood soap. It will look so awesome when you're done. People will actually want to sit on it, just so they can enjoy looking at and touching the wood. It's a good thing you took this picture at the halfway point, otherwise, people would think you just bought a new one.

Not necessarily. The Porta Nigra in Trier was built by the Romans out of white marble. Within 200 years it had turned black due to bacteria and mold growing on the surface of the stones. This would have been well before the industrial revolution when we began burning coal and wood in earnest. It could be natural.

I understand that there are benefits of cleaning the old churches but I have to admit that the gothic cathedrals look much more better as black/grey than the original white.

I must disagree. These churches were never meant to get dirtied by the offshoots of the industrial era. Between coal and oil wastes that are in the air, it's a real shame to see them decay through the added insult of acid rain.

That's varnish, plus candle soot, plus air pollution coming off. A professional conservator will then put a protective coating which can be removed later if/when necessary.

This was NOT done by a qualified conservator/restorer but by a TV presenter/art dealer. Yes, gels with solvents in are used to do this but not in such a hamfisted way. This video went viral in my professional community last year and we were all horrified!!

I thought pressure of power washing slightly roughens the surface of what you clean, meaning it makes it easier for moss, mould and lichen to regrow. Best to kill the lichen, etc (if you want it gone) then scrub it clean.

Absolutely not. The top one is a medieval church (Rouen I believe). This is in NYC and is a neo-gothic built in the late 19th century with a different kind of construction. It borrows heavily, but isn't as impressive. No offense NYC, but the medieval cathedrals took generations to build, reached unimaginable heights, and are, truly, breathtaking. From a time with the apex belief was not business (as NYC has attested in its architecture), but the Catholic Church. (just history, not saying it was right or wrong, it just was)

If you put any metal jewellery in a wrapped up piece of tin foil with a big spoon of salt and then immerse in hot water it comes out really shiny!

    Lizard Queen

7 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Place *sterling silver* in tin foil, shiny side next to the jewelry. Add boiling water with baking soda. The chemical reaction removes tarnish from the silver. Do not use this method with jewels containing soft stones (under 5 on Mohs scale), like opal, amber, pearls, etc. I use this method in my jewelry business.

Polishing platinum takes time...more so than gold or silver. You don't just rub paste polish on and wipe it off ( like us oldsters did with mom's silver during holidays...how I got my start as a jeweler...lol)The thing about platinum is it is SUPER dense, and you cannot skip steps when polishing, because the scratches have to get cancelled out (criss cross sanding)before moving to the finer grades.

This has not been just cleaned, but aggressively polished, and rhodium plated. The rhodium gives it the glassy surface. Usually the last step on all platinum, white gold, and most sterling jewelry.

This has been polished to remove all the scratches. Platinum doesn't tarnish or change color with age/use so "cleaning" would have just removed surface dirt.

Yeah, not "power washed". The original grey stain was sanded off and a new more natural stain color was applied, you can see the real wood color in the white area between the two.

Anyone who has ever used a power washer learns pretty quickly that you always start cleaning at the top. That grime on the boat's cabin will get all over the hull necessitating a second cleaning. But I do like the wave motif.

That's actually mainly just due to the contrast being higher and a bit unnatural in the second photo, making the plants look weird. If you look at the gravel to the left you can clearly see it's a question of contrast.

It's because of the climbers and the germs on their hands (we also have oils on our hands). There's also chalk which is probably rubbed off. I've been rock climbing for about 5 years now, so I know this sort of information.

People sometimes put a natural yogurt and water wash on new garden statues to make them look more aged (I think the natural microbes in the yogurt must feed small plants but please feel free to correct this if I'm wrong). I'm in agreement with the others it looked much better before. Now it looks cheaper and much less impressive. Still nature will soon have it looking weathered again in no time.

Could look into a trades job, not everyone's meant for college, theres a huge need for skilled trades / laborers. (I realize this that observation was tongue and cheek but still) Random short story: Riding along this little country road the other day, seen a farmer plowing his field, thought to myself "that could be my dream job, doing that all day" ... sometimes simple is best.

It's called 'reverse graffiti'. Believed to have begun in Brazil it is now used for advertising cleaning products in the US. Look up "reverse graffiti images". There's hundreds, some quite elaborate. The local governments hate it because it doesn't fit their technical definition of graffiti and even worse, it shows what a s****y job they do keeping stuff clean.

The sanding machines with sanding belts work well on straight plank wood floors, yes. For intricate woodwork, an orbital sander works better. (Has a round sheet of sandpaper, and the machine sands in a slightly oval pattern)

Can turn it back looking new again by using hydrogen peroxide (like £1 at any chemists.. sometimes even cheaper!) cover the yellowed areas in it and wrap it in cling film and place in the sun all day. brings SNES's and PS1's up like new!!!!!!! You need Hydrogen Peroxide and Oxy Action Stain remover. Scrub it in, leave it in sunlight for a couple of hours and then wash it all off, it'll get ride of all that Brown Bromidification on the grey plastic. Try a small area first though.

Les Choux de Créteil is a grouping of ten cylindrical buildings, each 15 stories in height, in the Paris suburb of Créteil. The project is known as Les Choux (the cauliflowers), due to the unusual shape of their balconies.

The only problem with doing this to plastic is whatever finish it had on it comes off so it becomes very porous. You then have to spray paint it if you want it to stay clean.

It looks like they cleaned it and prepped it to re-point (lay new mortar between bricks) because putting new on old won't work very well. Old soot and grime can actually damage the bricks

It's a mold stamped into the concrete. If you look closely you can see the pattern replicates itself. The lines dividing it in two directions are called contraction joints and they allow the concrete to expand and contract so it doesn't crack.

Yeesh, I just moved away from an area with hard water after growing up with the good fortune of having well water...it was a real lesson to learn how difficult it is to clean that stuff, let alone all the other things it affects! Laundry, bathing, etc. It seemed so backwards that the water made everything DIRTIER.

Why the heck is this included? Millions of people clean their sink every day all over the world. This is not special.

Its include because its all about the feeling of satisfaction seeing the difference a good cleaning does.

I would have just thrown it out. Unless of course, you were milking the job!

Still throw it away. Power washing doesn't kill the germs left in it.

A little Clorox and a wet rag will do it in no time.

All you did was take a rag and wipe that tiny bit of dirt off.-. I could do that in 1 second

Oils have worked really well for makeup removal in my experience :) especially when trying to get mascara and eyeliner out of your lashes and the crevices of your eyes. I use rosehip oil myself, with a tissue or soft paper towel. It gets *everything* and works way better than anything marketed as "makeup removers" that I've ever tried

Or, just buy a new one. Those things are a bacteria party. It would have been more effective to just run it through the dishwasher.
