The Winner Of 2019’s Nobel Peace Prize Had Just Been Announced

The world was eagerly waiting to hear who the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize laureate would be and now, finally, that wait has come to an end. The winner is Abiy Ahmed, the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, for his peacemaking deal with longtime enemy Eritrea.

The 43-year-old politician was one of the favorites to win this year’s Nobel Peace Prize. He was also recently congratulated for his role in helping create a powersharing deal in Sudan, after a political crisis that led to the arrest of Omar al-Bashir, who was the ruler of the country for nearly 30 years.

Many people thought that the prize would be awarded to 16-year-old Swedish teenager, eco-warrior, and climate justice activist Greta Thunberg. The Nobel committee refused to comment about not choosing Thunberg as the winner of this year’s prize.

Jakub Janda, the Director of the European Values Center for Security Policy, talked to Bored Panda about this year’s Nobel Peace Prize nomination.

According to Janda, this year’s nomination was a good choice: “It is a choice that clearly highlights what the Nobel Peace Prize is all about — bringing a political solution to intense conflict and ultimately creating peace. So that is why it is such a good choice”

“I believe pro-democracy citizens in Hong Kong would deserve the [Nobel Peace] Prize as well,” Janda revealed his thoughts about another worthy contender for the award.

The winner of the 100th Nobel Peace Prize was announced at 11 AM CEST (5 AM Eastern Time), after careful deliberation. There were a total of 301 candidates running for 2019’s prestigious award. Among them were 223 individuals and 78 organizations.

Greta Thunberg was one of the favorites to win this year’s prize

“I think what Abiy did with the Eritrea issue was very courageous and remarkable. I think a lot of people have considered that what he has done is worthy of such a recognition. The two countries are no longer in the state of war. Families have been reunited because flights are now running between the two countries. Relations that have been severed for 20 years have been rekindled,” Awol Allo, an associate professor of law at Keele University in the United Kingdom, told the media.

Greta Thunberg has a lot of supporters, but plenty of critics as well

Even though the names of nominators and nominees aren’t revealed for 50 years and we won’t know this year’s full list for half a century, Thunberg was one of the people who had been flagged as favorites to win the nomination. You can read Bored Panda’s previous articles about the teenager here, here, here, here, as well as here.

You can watch Greta Thunberg’s UN speech right here

Thunberg has been causing waves (sometimes literally) around the world for a while now, especially in the last few months, with her trip across the Atlantic Ocean using a zero-emission yacht and her fiery yet controversial speech at the United Nations Climate Action Summit.

The Nobel Committee refused to comment about not awarding the prize to Greta Thunberg

Some people are very supportive of her message that world leaders ought to be doing more to fight climate change. Others believe her intentions are good, but the tone she’s taking with politicians is too aggressive to bring about real change.

A third category of people thinks that Thunberg ought to be fighting global warming in practical terms, instead of speaking empty platitudes. While a fourth group of people criticizes the teenager because they don’t believe in climate change and the current global ecological crisis at all. While finding common ground between all of these positions is difficult, it doesn’t mean that we should all start shouting and yelling at each other. A civilized discussion is possible. All it takes is some patience and willingness to find compromises.

Good! I think Greta's great for speaking up (thought I'm not a fan of her comment that her childhood was ruined. That grates on me considering she had was most likely a very ideal childhood unlike a lot of children. It comes off as very conceited and spoiled) but she has done nothing for actual peace. This gentleman has.

The lass has done nothing practical apart from drawing attention using theatrics. Thank goodness the judging panel for the Nobel Peace Prize is rational. Besides, what has the action of the lass anything to do with peace? This is especially glaring because the speech given by the lass is filled with hatred and vindictiveness. We should all do our part to save our environment, but one should never berate others when the individual has yet to do enough.

Know why she didn't get it? Because she didn't deserve it. Basically all she's doing is voicing her opinion on the issue. Well a lot of other people "voice" their opinion on it as well and you don't see them getting one.

The Nobel is supposed to be based in large part on someone having a lifetime of deeply helpful work towards a cause, so by it's very terms a 16 year old like Greta shouldn't win. Unsurprisingly, the thought-free-far-left is saying she should anyway. I imagine Greta will work on the climate change issue for many decades, and one day it likely will be appropriate to award her some sort of lifetime achievement award - but by then the thought-free-far-left will be on to some other person who at that time is still a teenager - whom they will claim should win a lifetime achievement award at that time.

Ahmed is a great choice! But why not just write about the actual recipient of the price? I don't see a reason for the Greta Thuneberg - addition to this article? She is a teenager without any political background or ties who spent time on a sailboat and then marched up to a microphone and gathered media attention. That has NOTHING to do with actually doing anything for peace. Yeah, it was nice, but nothing we haven't seen before. Please give Ahmed his dues instead of just copying facebook drama.

I'm not meaning to hate or anything, but have you seen the video where Greta Thunberg was asked two LEGIT SIMPLE QUESTIONS and she couldn't answer because she didn't have a script? I mean, I'm starting to think people are using her as a mouthpiece for left-wing climate activists. In fact, she could be used to bring pressure onto world leaders and political figures. Another thing is that Greta Thunberg is only like, sixteen-ish. Can't she at least have a normal childhood??!!!! No offence, but sometimes Thunberg seems a little too much like an attention-seeking, non-rational... brat. I'm sorry, it's true.

Congrats getting the nomination but the commotion is gonna die down after a while regardless of how radical it seems in the beginning. Besides, her childhood is hardly ruined and devastated, it's an insult to children going hungry or scared for their lives in war torn countries. Honestly, standing up and berating politicians? Really hardly a skill, people do it all the time. I have more respect for the people who really cared and devoted themselves in researching alternative energy sources or innovating methods to help climate change. Holding up a sign and going 'booo you terrible people' just seems counter productive and kinda useless? Idk, she really doesn't deserve the prize though, definitely not over the scientists and engineers working on actually making a difference

Since when would being touchy-feely and sweet bring about a change in the monumental issue of the destruction of our planet? Greata sailed on a boat bought and paid for by people with money. She probably flew back home while others sailed the boat back. My belief is this. Greata was used by certain adults. She was brain washed to some degree into believing what they said. She was coached. In all honesty, I feel bad for her.

The Nobel Peace prize is political, not for merit. Yasser Arafat won it, as did - very nearly - Adolf Hitler in the 1930s. Essentially, announce you're going to kill millions and then say you won't do it after all (honestly or not) and you've got the prize.

Congratulations to Greta Thunberg on her nomination -- that in itself is remarkable. Huge congratulations to Abiy Ahmed! About 15 years ago, an artist in a studio adjacent to the graphic design shop where I worked introduced us to three young men who were part of the "Lost Boys of the Sudan" airlift. I learned much about that country's unrest. When I was in the hospital two years ago, many of the workers were from Eritrea, of which I knew nothing but had many questions. Everyone I asked had come into the U.S. through Atlanta, and the hospitals there offered a training program, which is how they came to be hospital workers in Denver.

I cannot believe how toxic this comment section is. All you grown adults are sitting here and depositing your hate on this 16 year old kid. You say she is "overly emotional," that she isn't doing anything to help, that she's a puppet, that she doesn't deserve the prize, and yet, I am willing to bet that she is doing 100x more than you are to preserve this dying earth and bring attention to this scary and all too real problem. She has inspired massive strikes across the globe and done an incredible amount to bring climate change to the media's attention. It's not that she doesn't deserve the prize: she's just not ready for it yet. She has only started gaining attention and beginning to make a change recently, and I'm very sure that in the coming years she will indeed win the prize. She's passionate and brave, and she's doing all she can. (1/2)

Many Nobel Peace Prizes awarded..... still no lasting peace. - "We must fight against the spirit of unconscious cruelty with which we treat animals. Animals suffer as much as we do. TRUE humanity does not allow us to impose such suffering on them. It is our duty to make the whole world recognize it. Until we extend our circle of compassion to all living things, humanity will NOT find peace." - Albert Schweitzer, German protestant clergyman, music scholar, philosopher, physician....and the Nobel Peace Prize recipient, October 30, 1953.

The Nobel Peace Prize is one of the five Nobel Prizes established by the will of Swedish industrialist, inventor, and armaments manufacturer Alfred Nobel, along with the prizes in Chemistry, Physics, Physiology or Medicine, and Literature. Since March 1901, it has been awarded annually (with some exceptions) to those who have "done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses" Nobel held 356 different patents, dynamite and gelignite being the most famous. The synthetic element nobelium was named after him. After reading a premature obituary which condemned him for profiting from the sales of arms, he bequeathed his fortune to institute the Nobel Prizes. (Wikipedia)

I do believe she will do great things in her life, but this is not her time yet... Experience in life will also give her wisdom and knowledge which may eventually lead her to the Nobel Peace Prize. But even if it doesn't, she'll still be a change agent in the future.

I respect Greta so much, I'm so grateful for what she's doing for my generation and the ones to come. I was lucky enough to see her speak in my town last week and hearing her speak almost made me cry. But the Nobel peace prize is very specifically for making peace, which is just a different category than the work she's doing. She definitely deserves such an honor, but it's like giving a basketball player a baseball award

Also “Others believe her intentions are good, but the tone she’s taking with politicians is too aggressive to bring about real change.” F**k that, conservative politicians are the problem. Now isn’t the time to pretend this is a non-partisan issue. The right wing has been fighting efforts to combat climate change for my whole lifetime. We need to be confronting our leaders that are in the way otherwise we’re going to make the same amount of change we’ve made in the last decade. Lots of awareness, but very little effort.

Of course that a black dude has to win. The world wouldn't given such prize to um... just a kid and a female kid no-less. Maybe if she were black... You can all hate me, but the truth is that black people tend to feed on sympathy from others (mostly from the white race), they're self-made victims even if a mighty white man abolished their slavery. It doesn't matter how much we've given to them, they'll never have enough. Folks, we've offer them equality, but they want superiority above all races. And no matter if you don't believe me, that's what's up with them. Racism or not racism involved.

Greata sailed on a boat bought and paid for by people with money. She probably flew back home while others sailed the boat back. My belief is this. Greata was used by certain adults.
