A tiny pit bull named Sasha was born with cleft lip and palette, which made her unable to nurse from her mother. She needed a lot of care, including tube-feeding.

Born with other serious medical conditions, she had to fight to stay alive right after coming to the world.

To give her a chance, her owner brought her to SNARR Animal Rescue Northeast, a rescue group in New York that specializes in special needs dogs.

Courtney Bellew, the director of the rescue group, then reached out to Marie DeMarco, an experienced nurse practitioner and founder of the nonprofit, FURRR 911.

Sasha’s head was comparatively large. Based on this, a veterinarian determined there was too much cerebrospinal fluid in her brain. She later developed some other problems.

But Sasha was quite strong-minded. “She’s defying all the odds. She’s proven that she wants to be here,” said DeMarco. “She has an amazing will and determination. Through all this, she really shouldn’t be here.”

Now Sasha is over three months old and under the perfect care of her foster mom, she is slowly gaining weight, but she isn’t big enough to receive surgery that could drain some of the fluid in her skull.

As no one knew exactly how long Sasha could survive, those who are concerned about this sweet pup are trying their best to spend more time with her.
