Every community has its fair share of drama. It could be the local weekend gardening group for women 40 and up, or the Tears for Fears online fan club; disagreements are bound to happen.
These small spats can easily turn into surprisingly big feuds. We’re talking about accusations, rivalries, and heated debates that turn into gossip. As outsiders, we're often fascinated by the drama because it gives us a peek into the quirks, unwritten rules, and insider information.
Here are some of those juicy stories, as shared by people on Threads. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself invested in some of them.

My husband had just gotten a very new car, a little Kia Soul. I HATED it with a passion. On my first ride, I texted my bestie talking absolute trash about the car.
Friends, I did not text my bestie. I texted my husband, and the FREAKING CAR READ THE TEXT OUT LOUD.
A mutual friend was in a car wreck a few days ago and while he’s actively in surgery his gf/baby mama is getting the texts on his phone from his side chicks.
This morning I had to work extra because the guy i hired 3 months ago is not doing a very good job.
My boss texted me "why are you working?"
And I replied "because (guy) cant be trusted"
She then called me immediately to let me know that I had just posted that on the group chat.
We mostly view gossip as a bad thing. Especially when it turns malicious, it can damage reputations and erode trust. But some experts would argue that there is an upside to it.
University of California, San Diego professor Eshin Jolly, for one, says it is a “universal form of social connection.”
My sister works in zoos, and at her last zoo there was a hornbill that had the same name as she did. This hornbill was the zoo's most problematic animal. Almost every day she would get a page over her radio warning everyone that she had escaped. This brought her great joy.
It was also a secret because they're pretty dangerous birds, so it felt special hearing about it.
At one of my previous workplaces, I gave one of my coworkers a tiny pumpkin. He named it Pascal. The next day, another coworker knit Tiny Pascal a tiny hat. The day after that, Pascal + hat disappeared. There was a witch hunt. There were Missing Pumpkin + Hat posters taped up. There were rumors. But no one ever saw Pascal again.
Local attorney got busted with substances in purse during security check at courthouse on her way to represent her client in court.
I learned about this in my high school criminology class 17 years later.
It was my sister.
“Gossiping is valuable because it gives us an opportunity to vicariously learn from others,” Jolly said. “We can experience things from other people’s point of view and share our own experiences.”
He even went so far as to say that repeated gossiping can build trust, relationships, and social bonds.
We had 2 patients giving birth at the hospital with the same father. Neither knew. He just bounced from room to room.
Im a dialysis patient and I heard one of the nurses confide on another on her “plan”. Someone has been drinking her expensive creamer & when she found it empty in the fridge she was so mad. Her plan: she brought a new one and mixed it with ranch. Now i can’t wait to see who drank ranch coffee.
My friend’s five-year-old got a hold of her phone, got on Amazon, and ordered TEN HOT PINK MINI 4-WHEELERS, totaling over $7,000. They didn't notice until huge packages started arriving. When they asked her why she ordered 10, she said, 'For my friends!
Jolly also explained that talking about other people’s lives behind their backs helps us negotiate social norms because “we are having a conversation underneath a conversation.”
“When you comment on someone’s behavior, you’re not just saying what they did; you’re implicitly asking, ‘Hey, do you think this is ok? Do you feel weird about this too?’”
I live on a private gravel road and we all pay an annual road maintenance fee. There is some suspicion around the person collecting these fees and how the funds are being handled, because the road is not exactly in great shape lately.
There is a neighborhood meeting next week to discuss the issue. Will it be a confrontation? A mob attack?
I don’t know, but I’m bringing popcorn…
My neighbor is an elderly man and has two overnight visitors who never encounter one another. They sleep over every few nights on separate nights. One is a man and the other is a woman. He spends late nights talking and dancing romantically with the man in his back yard which faces ours, and he sits on his porch and cuddles the woman while bird watching.
They’re all in their mid-late eighties. Both relationships appear romantic. Im uncertain if they know about eachother.
My kids play with neighborhood kids, and recently during a game of “family” the grandpa died and they laid him to rest on a pool float while they all gathered round him and sang the national anthem. Hearing the family tree and lore they’ve made up is like a soap opera.
We’ve all gossiped in one form or another, whether it’s talking about a controversy someone was involved in at work or discussing how a neighbor handled their marital problem. According to Knox College psychology professor Frank McAndrew, it is almost unavoidable.
“I don’t think it’s possible to stop people from gossiping,” McAndrew told The Guardian. “It’s a part of who we are, like eating or breathing.”
I work in a very old set of buildings, 100-75+ years old. The shop next to ours has recently been discovered to not really be a building but a bit of roof between the two outer walls of the buildings alongside. An alleyway with a roof and a door basically. This is causing a lot of conundrum because of historical building status and what counts as original and part of the building for remodeling etc. This shop exists in a historic status limbo, and we all must ask ourselves what is a building?
My local paper has community submitted “Halos & Pitchforks.” There is constantly delightful mini dramas there, but my favorite was the Pitchfork written about the “pair of kids throwing pebbles in the creek,” and then the following week a Halo to “parents who don’t put their kids on iPads and let them explore nature and play in the creek like we did in the 70s.”
I really wanted it to keep going.
One of my coworkers was on a zoom with a bunch of other social service professionals, including a high mucky muck from a vendor agency, new to the state (they get paid to provide services to clients with developmental disabilities). During a break he got confused, muted his audio when he meant to turn his video off, got up and was naked from the waist down. Shirt and tie up top, nothing down below. She saw the frank, beans and buns, as did everyone else on the call.
If you don’t want the ugly repercussions of gossiping, take some precautions. For one, avoid adding alcohol into the mix where your ability to restrain yourself is much lower.
“In a situation where your guard is down, and your inhibitions are lifted, you’re at greater risk,” he said. “You may not remember exactly what you said to whom, or be aware that you did something you shouldn’t have.”
Our senior warden made a “forgotten treasures” table to try to clear out the stuff left in the church kitchen. There is a typo in the sign, which the church treasurer noticed, and now he is busting the chops of the senior warden in the staff chat.
There’s this parking lot in the downtown area, a great spot close to eateries, shopping, etc. for a long time it was free to park. Then up went gates and it was paid parking. Turns out the lot is owned by the church next door and they made it pay to park to make more money. And now the lot sits empty bc no one wants to pay the church to park.
My mom’s condo community is staging a coup against the HOA president to have her removed. They’ve been meeting for weeks, have a petition, and a new president all lined up.
HBD: Our neighbors should probably get a divorce, but they haven’t, so we’re treated to monthly domestic disputes of varying degrees of intensity. During one, the female neighbor started throwing trash out their front door—while completely naked. Apparently the husband hadn’t taken out the trash? It was a shocking ring doorbell alert.
My neighbor’s decorative lawn flag (one of those little ones just a couple of feet off the ground) was stolen, and she called the sheriff. She insisted they arrest the perp. She had caught them on her ring camera, so she was able to ID them! It was the three-year-old from two doors down.
Found out my boss hates my father-in-law. My father-in-law hates my boss. Neither one of them knows my affiliation with the other person. I spent years unwillingly gathering intel on both (at that point, unknown) parties. Thanks to a story told by both my FIL and boss, I only recently found out that they were talking about each other. I now know WAY more than I should about both of them.
A woman in our neighborhood got caught on camera doing number two in a neighbor’s bushes while she was out on an early morning run. The yard’s owner posted on Facebook “hey I know who you are please come back and clean this up” and when she didn’t the owner posted the video (blurred) and now everyone calls her Pootricia.
The lady who lives next door to the soccer field thinks teenagers are smoking grass on the field at night but it’s really the neighborhood dads and a couple moms. The cops went by to investigate and didn’t do anything because it’s just a bunch of 50 year old's chillin out and walking home.
They want to build a roundabout at 217 and 66. A ROUNDABOUT LIKE THOSE LIBERALS HAVE. Can you even imagine.
(For the record, I think the roundabout is a great idea. Then again, I’m one of those traffic control liberals.)
We had the great cheesing incident of 2021 in our neighborhood. The recipient of a slice of Kraft on their car went door to door asking if anyone had videos. They had felt targeted and demanded answers and arrests.(!!!)
When they posted on the neighborhood FB page asking for information leading to the apprehension of said Cheese Wiz, I couldn’t help it and made some pun like “this is a travesty, no matter how you slice it.” Which opened the flood gates of cheese puns. Glorious. The best post.
Some absolute criminal in my workplace keeps putting bags away without resealing them, which has resulted in several people being covered in shrimp juice. When the culprit is identified there will be a reckoning.
I have 2 mama cats and their 6 kittens living in my back porch. All the drama I need. But here it was nap time and everyone is happy.
And before anyone says anything, I’ve caught one mama and had her spayed. Working on getting the other mama and when the babies are old enough all of them fixed.
One of my students last year was the mayor’s nephew. Anytime a child didn’t do what he wanted, he’d threaten them. Examples are: “I’m going to tell my UNCLE the MAYOR to fire your dad!” Or “My UNCLE is the MAYOR and he’s going to kick your mom out of her house!” He was a doozy lol.
Our neighbor was arrested last night and while she was sat on the bench outside her place, we could hear the police questioning her and she actually said “I only broke in because I knew they were doing it. They’re brother and sister! It’s wrong!”
Dude was a mid-level manager at a Big Tech Store I worked at in college. I remember the *moment* I met him I was skeeved out and then shocked most others liked him or told me he “wasn’t that bad”. FF 10 years and I have a feeling he’s getting divorced from the lack of his wife on his posts and google him. I found a “ORDER GRANTING PLAINTIFFS’ MOTION FOR DEFAULT JUDGMENT” and learn he was accused and charged for defrauding investors for 2.4 million dollars. It was WILD.
I saw a lady at Walmart wearing an air of pants with an elastic waistband pulled all the way up over her chest with no shirt on.
They were definitely not a sleeveless jumpsuit situation. It was a pair of pants 100% that she just pulled up and tucked her torso into as well.
She had to slouch to keep from exposing herself. Based on her accessories etc. it looked intentional, and did not appear to be an issue of lack of available garments or a substance related choice. But you never know.
I have accidentally become the nemesis of a ring of thieves in my neighborhood. I like to smoke grass, and I don't wanna bother my neighbor, so I always go for a walk in a wooded area near my neighborhood. I often go off the path to find a quiet place to sit, and I've found three vespas, a scooter, and two bikes hidden at various locations. Got them all back to their owners.
There was a train wreck of a woman who briefly worked with me for a bit. I’d occasionally tell my fiancé about her shenanigans, but never too much detail. She no-call, no-showed on a few opening shifts and was let go. No big deal; it happens. A few months later, my fiancé started working at a new place. He came home and told me about this annoying lady he ran into occasionally, who worked in a different part of his department. Cut to a few weeks later, we’re out for lunch. I spot her. He spots her. We’re totally unaware we’re both avoiding eye contact with the same lady until we get to the car and start telling the other about it.
My neighbors saw a taped-up fridge dumped on the side of the road. Everyone was convinced there were body parts inside, and they called the sheriff. When the sheriff opened it up hours later, it was just rotten food!
Ooh, the drama I hear downstairs…
It’s a grandma who lives below me and her grandkids are over all the time (possibly a daycare situation) but I love to hear these kids play. There’s just something about a bunch of kids playing “cowboys and bad guys” and hearing a 5 year old with an incredible John Wayne drawl “well, well, well. If it isn’t the bad guy who stole my cows.” It’s a mini soap opera out there!
ten years ago i watched the reddit calligraphy sub tear itself apart and go down in a hailstorm of drama over whether or not doing cursive with a brush pen counts as calligraphy. i’m making it sound bad but trust, it was genuinely INCREDIBLY entertaining to watch.
A woman in my HOA neighborhood is mad because— *checks notes aka neighborhood Facebook group* kids were outside at around 1pm giggling too loud in someone’s backyard.
My employee showed up to work today in a graphic tshirt and I had to drive 35 min to give him a new shirt and tell him to change because I received 5 separate phone calls/ texts about the unprofessionalism of scooby doo.
My nextdoor neighbor was informed today that their lease is being terminated and they have 60 days to leave. The landlord has videos of them lighting fireworks for over an hour last night. We live in an extreme fire danger area so all fireworks are illegal.
people are complaining on the town fb page that the high school marching band was “not even listenable” during the 4th parade…it was 100 degrees outside and it’s like a 4 mile route. And they were in their full outfits. How perfect are they supposed to sound exactly?
My golden hedgehog tape dispenser went missing from the library so I put up missing posters all over the library and some of the kids were ON A MISSON and finally found her in the art room.
We have a kitchen at work. One of my coworkers went nuclear about dishes being left in the sink, and decreed that all dishes need to be washed, dried and put away at the time they’re used. Then she TOOK THE DISH DRAINER AWAY. Legend.
Over the weekend, a woman out fishing found a human arm in the lake. Police asked the community for help identifying the man it came from via tattoos. His wife & brother are now in custody….
Our (fairly small) high school staff room had a lunch thief. Despite regular emails and signs and announcements at staff meetings, it continued. One of the teachers finally had enough and crashed all the way out, letting EVERYONE (including district level admin) know via email that he was DONE and had spit in his hummus.
I work at a small retail business that is open most holidays. Every holiday, we spend the day getting "are you open?" calls and it's really annoying. On Saturday, we made a scoreboard and competed for the most number of "are you open?" calls. Gamifying is the way to turn a frown upside down. I won, which means I have to buy coffee drinks for my coworkers next Saturday.
HBD! Our school superintendent resigned suddenly last year, which was shortly followed by the revelation that a board member had bilked the district for over $90k in a deal that the superintendent had “unwittingly” signed off on. But really they were swingers and that was blackmail money…
My upstairs neighbors who kept trying to convert me suddenly told me they were moving out. I was so sad, since our girls were playmates. Turns out the husband was an undercover missionary to India and had gotten arrested on a trip. He was held for weeks in bad conditions and threatened with years in prison if he didn’t give up his network…
He gave them up. When he got back, the mission was “understanding”. Right up until they fired him a week later.
I worked with a doctor in a small practice and he suddenly closed the local office bc he told his wife he was having an affair with our coworker and wanted to get divorced to be with her. It went sideways and instead he laid us off and moved to Florida full time. She’s suing him now.
Garden threads is all a buzz because someone bought what they thought was a pepper plant, but it was basil. They let the flowers bolt, so now EVERYONE is telling them to prune it and let it bush out. They are also getting tons of recipes and advice for freezing and saving. Garden threads gossip ends in general help from newly invested threinds; it’s my favorite threads.
I studied abroad in Panama in college. For our final project, we all wrote papers cumulating the research we each had been working on for the whole semester. One of the other students had finished her paper, titled “Sustainability for Some”, but someone snuck onto her computer and replaced every instance of “sustainabl-“ with “poopabl-“. Her paper was now “Poopability for Some,” and the whole thing talked about “poopability”. The teacher is the one who noticed, after it was turned in.
My mom belonged to an erudite, intellectual and very small Facebook group for people who loved the novels of a well-known 19th century English author. Everybody in the group had known each other (online) for years.
One day, the group was overtaken by one of the members’ wives furiously posting screenshots of all the sexting conversations that had happened between her husband and a female group member. (1/2).
