A new Canadian documentary from Todd Jones at Shaw TV is digging deep into a very unnatural natural phenomenon. For the past 15 years, on the same day each spring, residents of Nanaimo, British Columbia and the surrounding area in Canada are receiving a very random treat with notes apparently written from what was previously believed to be a mythological creature.

Every year on March 26th, over 70 people on Vancouver Island are waking up to find cans of Special Sasquatch Fruit Salad on their doorsteps along with funny but weirdly personal notes from the hairy creature.

It all started from a conversation at Christmas between myself and two friends 15 years ago. We were discussing how random holiday mascots are (ie. a magical elf who flies with reindeer and comes down chimneys, a bunny that delivers eggs, etc) We decided that if we were to invent a new holiday, it would have to be something very weird and I offered “every March 26th, the Sasquatch comes down from the hills leaving fruit salad for the good boys and girls.”

To our great surprise and delight, there must have been some magic in the air that night because 3 months later, on March 26th, we each woke up to a delivery of canned fruit salad from the benevolent beast complete with hilarious notes. Sasquatch Day was born!

Every year, one or two more families have been added to the list and now, 15 years later, over 70 cans are delivered throughout the night.
