Numbers and facts can be difficult to comprehend when they're merely symbols on the screen. However, data becomes much more evident once it is visualized.

The subreddit r/CooolGuides is an excellent example of this axiom. Its 5.9 million members share charts, diagrams, maps, and other thought-provoking pictures on sports, travel, history, and virtually every subject you can imagine.

We at Bored Panda love them and have already covered the online community numerous times, but they've made so many interesting posts since the last one that we just had to put together a new collection of our recent favorites.

The first time I saw one IRL was in Panama. It was walking on the rafter above my bed. I woke up to find a small bite taken out of my tomato. It was always just one bite, like he forgot he didn't like tomatoes and tried again, the cutie!

my only up close and personal encounter with an opossum was where i worked. it was a large complex with several buildings. went to meet a friend so waiting outside her office. no one had told me that there was one who had made its home in one of the bases of the huge planters. apparently he didn't like having anyone close to his home. when she came out the door i was standing on a picnic table and this little bugger was hissing at me. they called him bob and they let him hang around for all of the above reasons.

As someone who suffers with PTSD from an a*****e childhood, I hate that people mislabel trauma. Furthermore, triggering can be by something that is seemingly innocuous.

Yes! People use terms and don't even know what they mean. "I was traumatized by her dirty bathroom." No. It's deeper and harder and more serious than that, and sometimes you don't know what will act as a trigger.

I was gaslit for over a decade and didn't realize it until I finally left and went to therapy. Before that, I legitimately thought that healthy, loving couples I knew irl were faking it for show. One psychologist labeled me as suffering from suspiciousness/paranoia when trying to establish intimate interactions with men, after I left my ex. Being legitimation gaslit is isolating, confusing, depressing, and changes how you view yourself and others.

I wish the "actual phycology" definition had been more clear about how a*****e real narcissism is. it's a constant struggle and very isolating to try to get others to understand how destructive narcissist are. You made it works like they're not that bad. They are.

There's a study from 2023 that shows how effective visuals can be. Researchers Amjaad Mansour Alwadei and Mohammed Ali Mohsen conducted a 10-week experiment involving 41 Arab college students learning English.

The students were divided into two groups: one learned vocabulary through traditional methods, while the other used infographics tailored to their course material. These infographics transformed standard vocabulary lessons into engaging visual narratives, making complex words more accessible and memorable.

The results were striking: students who used infographics performed better in both recognizing and using new vocabulary, not just immediately after the lessons, but even weeks later. They also reported finding the visual approach more engaging and helpful compared to traditional methods.

The last sign is the universal sign for « everything is ok » in any loud environment (flying, skydiving, ground operations) or when speaking is hard or impossible (diving, climbing). It’s completely dumb to use it for signaling a danger.

If the person they’re talking to seems dangerous, then an “ok” sign could be a good idea because they won’t know anyone signaled for help and will be less likely to escalate. Also, as long as everyone in the group has agreed on what it means, it doesn’t really matter what it’s universally considered.

You missed the bell curve. And the rules of thirds.

Psychologist Haig Kouyoumdjian, Ph.D., says, "Words are abstract and rather difficult for the brain to retain, whereas visuals are concrete and, as such, more easily remembered."

To illustrate, he suggests a similar scenario to that in the aforementioned study, only with a more exciting twist. "Think about your past school days of having to learn a set of new vocabulary words each week. Now, think back to the first kiss you had or your high school prom date."

"Most probably, you had to put forth great effort to remember the vocabulary words. In contrast, when you were actually having your first kiss or your prom date, I bet you weren't trying to commit them to memory. Yet, you can quickly and effortlessly visualize these experiences (now, even years later). You can thank your brain’s amazing visual processor for your ability to easily remember life experiences. Your brain memorized these events for you automatically and without you even realizing what it was doing," the psychologist explains.

My last job it didn't even take getting paid well, my boss publicly acknowledged I was doing the work of three people and constantly made me feel appreciated and just did simple things like buying me nice lunches so I could work uninterrupted and made me feel like a hero saving his dept (which I was but making me feel awesome about it made me not realize I could and should find better pay)

It's not merely a question of fun. It's cheaper to treat people like c**p in the short term. And short term gains are what drives up stock prices for your shareholders. It's what pays out the executive bonuses. The fact that in the long term it lowers productivity, and increases costs doesn't matter, because we can just for more workers and boost the stock prices again. Eventually, the company goes bust, but in the meanwhile you've maximized profits for your private equity partners. Everybody wins, except the workers and customers, but who cares about those people.

My depression started at 6. I knew enough about people to realise I'm constantly in danger and nothing will ever get better. I had to work that day on the allotment in negative atmosphere while my peers were spoiled and could watch TV. Don't make depression seem like a liar. It tells the uncomfortable truth.

This is a bit oldish. Unless you are in the very rural Germany, 90% of the places will accept your payment with card. Exceptions being ice cream shops, farmer markets and turkish döner shops.

Exactly. Most of these are accurate (I personally feel very uncomfortable talking religion and politics with casual acquaintances and would prefer the American way, but it's accurate for most Germans) but the cash thing was only true until 2020. The pandemic changed it very quickly and now nearly every business will accept cards/contactless.

German here: Can confirm. The cash money thing annoys me (and especially younger people a lot), but its getting better. There will be a new law under the new government, that businesses must provide a non-cash way of accepting payment.

"Be punctual": My father, who was a very much loved and respected director of a school for special needs children, and in this role went to lots of fundraisers and had close contact with police (part of the fines go to charities, so too to the support organization for this school) and politicians, applied this successful rule: If business, be on time, don't waste anybodies time. If private, it is polite to be 5 min late, so the host has the chance for a last minute fix of the dining table, trip to the WC or whatever.

I don't like it. It's like rich people evade responsibility to give back, and help carry the weight of running a nice and stable country. All this weight lands on the back of 'normal' people, while the country deteriorates. There is no lack of money, money gets hoarded up in the wrong places.

Not so fun fact, making the top 1% of earners pay the normal amount of taxes they owe (not even extra) would be almost enough to wipe out poverty in the U.S.

the last on has a minor flaw - in order for this to work the appreciation in stock value has to be larger than the debt repayment and interest. what you can do is borrow from a company you own at negligible interest - looking at you Rees-Mogg! (UK)

Debt interest is far lower with collateral. And yes, it means that your ROI has to be higher than the interest in that debt. But on average, the markets far exceed the interest in secured debt. You can also do what Trump does and just default on your debt.

Wait a sec... in the third example the person borrowing money does not return the money to the bank? At some point he will have to sell the stocks (and pay tax on the gains) so it looks like example no. 2 with maybe some gains IF the stock value increases.

My fav way people make money is with whole life insurance. You take a loan out against your insurance. This does not count as income and is not taxable. The interest on it goes right back to you. You are paying yourself interest to loan yourself money. Its like a money glitch lol. Then you use that money to invest in money producing assets to build your wealth. It's honestly so stupid the system can be so complex but that's a cool way around it imo. Don't hate the players guys. Hate the game. The dirty game set up by crappy politicians who wrote the tax code. You can't be mad other people know how to work it to their advantage because of you could you would. Be mad at the people who write the tax code and make better decisions with your votes and be active in change, not protests but REAL change. Start petitions and organize non profit groups to help make actual changes in a legal level.

I learned so much from this specific translation, and with all the footnotes I even learned how to pronounce Italian words that I NEVER would have gotten right if I hadn't read this. My copy also had all the Doré illustrations, which was a treat. Most importantly, Ciardi is brilliant, insightful, has a wicked sense of humour, and his footnotes were almost as good at the book itself.

Have been reading that men over the age of 55 are at strong risk of heart attacks when shoveling snow -- a combination of the exertion and the cold. But you don't have to be a man or over 55 to suffer a similar fate. So don't push yourself too hard, and take frequent breaks. Better yet, make your kids do it, lol.

technically and legally they are. While run by the states, in many states that semi-independent non profit corporations run by the state, and legally private employers. Its why in New York, our SUNY system is a private employer, but in New Jersey, next door, they are considered the government. DIfferent legal filings

These are large university systems in many cases. My state of NY, SUNY, the largest employer, has 64 schools, 29 4-year degree granting institutions, 30 2-year community colleges, and 5 Statutory Schools, that is 64 different campuses, and and of those 29 4-year schools, half of them are research schools that provide PhD's, 4 operate medical schools (3 with their own hospitals and medical clinics), etc. There are 468,000 students between all the undergraduate and graduate programs in SUNY, and they need to employ a lot of people to run it, from faculty, to lab staff, janitors, administrators, etc. They employ 85,540 people to run all that and teach and more. They are a Government run non-profit semi-independent university system

The real guide to booze-loving is not sales, it's acohol related deaths. Sales fails to account for illegal and home-brewed booze. Belarus is number 1 for alcohol related deaths, followed by Russia. The US is near the top. Ireland is in the bottom third.

This chart is incorrect in the manager mark down aspect (.97). That is a corporate buyer markdown; $.88 is a GM markdown because their store needs to move that item immediately. Also, there's a # symbol that denotes an item's price had been changed by the buyer due to a code date about expired. Once those have been sold the price will go back to normal. An EPC on a sign denotes the warehouse GM or AGM marked the item down for a reason and corporate buying wasn't involved.

Why's that? Does he take issue with single people that don't have kids? Because that's the biggest change on the chart -- 17% rise. Why's that something that Jesus would cry over? He was single man without children, was he not? As were many of his followers. Single parents only went up by 3%. As long as parents are raising kids together, who cares if the government signed a paper for them? Being married can actually screw a lot of things up like when you're disabled & they count a spouse's income as yours so you get taxed despite only surviving on 12k a yr. Or how about for health insurance in the US, where families are getting hammered for insurance... Better not being married so your kid's have insurance. That's the right thing to do.

What's in such a "bad state" kissy? That people are staying single without kids? Why's that a "bad state" if younger people don't get married on a whim & have children young? Single parents only rose by 3% so there's nothing really to see there. Looks like most of the changes are from people staying single or being married without kids. Neither option points to things being in a "bad state" when the state of the world is in a "bad state" -- rather see people obstain from children if they know things are going in a bag direction. Not fair to bring children into a world people refuse to take care of, especially when a lot of people are wasteful over watering lawns, driving around all day, working at dead end jobs, with tech ready to take jobs soon... Like why have a bunch of kids? So they can live in a toxic environment? With less jobs due to technology? The population can't keep going up for no reason at all. That would be foolish.

These lists are highly subjective for historical figures -- and with kings, emperors, rulers, etc., it's hard to know where to separate personal wealth from the wealth of "the state". I've seen articles estimating Joseph Stalin's wealth at 7.5 trillion, Genghis Khan's wealth at $120 trillion in today's money, and Mansa Musa as even higher than that.

Just buy an accord or camry, and ignore everything else.

A couple of these are transmission-specific. The 20 Jetta, for example, had massive issues with their automatic offerings that simply did not exist in their manuals. The fact that the Dodge Charger Hellcat that Chrysler put Fiat suspension in isn't on this list is also extremely concerning.

HA I just bought a 19 Jetta 😂 I would add that I’d avoid pretty much any Buick Encore/Encore GX, they’re just plastic garbage Chevy Traxs. And avoid all Dodge Journeys, they’re all garbage. I’ve never seen a pre-owned Dodge Journey that wasn’t a gross pile of junk.

The newest car I've ever owned is a 2009, so it wouldn't make this list.

I remember, it was a longtime ago, that the speed limit in Montana was 70 at night ... and "reasonable and proper" in daylight

Man, does everyone speed that excessively in Ohio or are the cops just ticket-happy?

It's probably because everyone is trying to drive out of Ohio as fast as possible.

Places where people are unwilling to pay taxes—so localities slap a “fee” on every event they can, and the cops write LOTS of speeding tickets.

Considering I had a friend get a ticket for going 26 in a 25, I can attest to that big blue spot on Ohio.

Yep, can confirm it's Ohio! Between State Patrol and local it can be ridiculous. If you drive an area enough, you'll learn where the hang-outs are.

Nie chcesz mieć problemu ze szczurami? Nie dokarmiaj ich. To wystarczy - one się nie rozmnażają w okolicy, w której nie mogą się wyżywić.
