I once read that Persia aspired to make beauty a part of its daily life. And so it seems that this mentality has survived to this modern day. There is beauty in their ancient vestiges as well as in their hospitality and grace.

With its grand history and present controversial politics, it is also an enigmatic country that is difficult to understand for westerners. It has a strong sense of culture and tradition and yet it is a modern country with a strong economy, functioning infrastructure and a dynamic youth.

Tehran is a true metropolis with life exploding in every street corner. Comparable to many other large cities such as London and New York – it displays the best and the worst of its country. And it is important to understand that it is a city that functions, in a country that functions. Due to its unlucky geographic position, Iran is surrounded by an ocean of war zones and is often mistaken for one.

I will note that Iran’s regime is not an easy one to discuss and is also a story for another time.

My friend and I travelled during Muharram, which is the first month of the islamic calendar. This resulted in a more “religious experience” overall.
