The wedding season is upon us. So, once again, it’s time to dive into the worst bridesmaid or groomsman outfits known to humankind while coping with awkward seating arrangements. There are many etiquette rules when it comes to being a wedding guest. And while you can get away with breaking a few of them, there are some sacred ones you should always abide by. Wearing a white gown to witness other people get married, as you might guess, is one of them. However, when Amy Pennza’s mother-in-law showed up to her big day with a bridal gown, Amy wasn’t even mad. She understood her. But if you want to know how a woman can pull off such wedding attire and get away with it, you need to read Amy’s explanation.

Ignoring the dress code isn’t the only way to get unwanted attention at a wedding. And you don’t have to be an expert on etiquette to avoid it. Common decency is enough. For starters, keep your phone on silent because a ceremony where the couple exchange vows only to be interrupted by an obnoxious ringtone isn’t exactly ideal. Heck, you can even play it safe and unplug it for the entire event. Secondly, try to avoid complaining if something isn’t to your liking. Months — sometimes even years — go into the preparation of a wedding. Everything from the venue to the menu is selected after careful planning, and by the time the big day rolls around, chances are that the bride and groom are probably pretty proud of how it turned out. So whether it’s too hot or the food isn’t up to your standards, make an effort of keeping your opinions to yourself. Also, even though weddings are a celebration and you’re supposed to have fun, be aware of your alcohol intake. As great as open bars are, spending all of your time sipping the free wine and beer could lead to doing plenty of things that will be captured in photos for life.

I think the other thing you learn growing up in poverty is how to share. So what if she showed up in a wedding dress? My own mother would never watch her own grandson without expecting payment. She would constantly bad-mouth our relationship to anyone who would listen "It won't last a year," she'd say. My MIL was a generous kind woman that was so proud of her grandson and of me for believing in her son. And if my MIL had shown up to my wedding wearing a wedding dress..I'd have gladly shared the floor and the light with her...because she deserved nothing less. We sadly lost her in 2014. And I'd give anything to see her today...wedding dress or not. Some things in this world are just not worth getting angry over. Who cares what she wore...she's there for them when they need it, she loves them and that's all that matters.

I say if the real bride of the day isn't upset, no one on the internet has any right to be upset over this situation. Yeah, it was a bad move by mom but people make mistakes. Honestly I read this article because I was looking for a funny horror story but it sounds rather sweet with more details, even if misguided.

You seem to have accepted her reasoning that the dress was a good bargain. Have you been to a thrift store recently? They are overflowing with mother of the bride, prom, party dresses, gala gowns. There was absolutely no reason for her to buy a bridal dress. This is attention seeking behavior at its finest.

There are two things that I noticed, both having little to do with the mother-in-law: A cop at a wedding? Seriously? Why on earth? And secondly: many people ask if the bridge cussed the groom. Holding your partner liable for his or her parents is the best way to end a relationship!

She should have dyed the dress a different colour. If she didn't drive around so much hunting for bargains, she could have saved a load on petrol and bought something else for a few bucks more. She could have worn something she already had in the closet. She could have borrowed something. There is no excuse for wearing white to a wedding if the bride wears white. I understand MIL is a lovely lady, but there were other alternatives.

Sounds like a made up twitter story for some social media exposure, I mean, she's an author after all. Plus she used a few very clear literary devices like the initial hook line to stir up inquiry and then the following opposition twist to the reader's preconceived plot.

Love the backstory, however, I agree with MatchaMutt”s Twitter comment: Why couldn’t the MIL have bought a bargain dress in any other color than bride-white? Fame must have been in the back of her mind.

All I see is plain white dress - nothing over the top. I think the bride under dressed for the occasion and mother in law upstage her. Does not help the fact the mother in law looks very young. I can see why they were competing for attention. I am glad the bride was able to look past the mistake and move on. After all people should be judged by the content of their character and not by one event.

MIL could have found just as good a bargain on a different dress, but given her poverty-stricken background, I have to wonder if she had an honest-to-goodness wedding dress when she got married and was subconsciously trying to make up for missing that.

Just because this was done without malice doesn't make it acceptable. She could have dyed the dress for real cheap, too. It's nice that the bride didn't have a meltdown over it though.

If the bride was ok with her MIL wearing a wedding dress, why did she post it in the first place? Then she takes a while to respond to all the critics? Something doesn't add up. My MIL is also very frugal, she found a nice dress at a consignment shop that was not a wedding dress.

It's a pity that one of the things she didn't grow up with was parents who taught her how to respect others. I was in a charity store the other day and I found a beautiful silk blue dress that would have been perfect for a wedding for less than a fifth what it would have been new. You can get bargains everywhere for anything.

Frugal or not, wearing white to a wedding is usually a nono. I also dont understand anyone on the grooms side not saying, nope. I also think sons wedding would not be frugal time. I also lost all sense of thrifty with the stories of bloody marys and mojitos.

The most telling line: "... I was worried it might hurt her feelings, ..." The new DIL is a class act. The act of getting married was the most important part of the day, and she was so compassionate towards her MIL. Whatever feelings this story may bring up in my, I'm just thankful that this frugal lady won the lottery with her new DIL.

I know folks that grew up in third world poverty and still wouldn't do this. Her level of "frugalness" verges on some form of mental trauma. I think it's sweet the author defends her actions but this type of behavior is difficult to deal with. Reminds of the old folks that were scared from the Great Depression. They have wealth now but still are willing to eat expired food so it doesn't "go to waste".

No. That is rubbish and was for no other reason than to draw attention to herself. Just no. If she was that frugal, she wouldn't have bought a wedding gown, even on sale, as they are expensive. She would have bought a regular dress from a second hand store.

I like the story, but it is still a crappy thing to do to the bride. When I got married the last time, my dress was white with a silver overlay, a summer type dress, garden wedding. Two women wore white dresses to my wedding, although I let it go, some of guests were not so kind, I have never said a word to either of them about it, apparently they both told at least two of my guests that since it wasn't a first marriage, it didn't matter, what they know is that it wasn't a first marriage for my husband, and still a crappy thing to do no matter who's wedding or what number you believe it is!

Mate not being funny - even if that dress was 20p - she shouldnt have worn a dress like that to HER DAUGHTER IN LAWS WEDDING. I would've been so upset!

I don't understand all the comments here. Yeah it's a bit weird to show up in a bridal gown, but it's not like it was the same one because the MIL was some sort of attention stealing b***h, so WHO F*****G CARES? The tweeter is definitely a bit of a b***h because the bridesmaids were "worried" she'd grab the cop's taser. The comments here are from some overly dramatic people. I think it was a d**k move for the original tweet since it was clearly out of context. Thankfully the MIL was cool with it. She seems like the most generous spirit ever and the people s******g on her need to seriously reevaluate their priorities.

We're all missing the important issue. MOTIVE! was this as an assh**le move to undermine the wedding or a TIFU type of deal. Why bash this kind woman for a mistake that just looked as though purposely done to undermine what what.

I think she had a right to the first tweet. Paybacks. But, I appreciate the explanation and the MIL mindset. Doesn't mean she couldn't not be irritated in the On art but still can stand behind the woman who raised the man she married and loves. You don't have to like it to understand where she comes from. Sheeesh lol people are taking it so PERSONAL when it didn't happen to them as a person. Haha

This sounds a lot like my MIL who's frugality drove me crazy until I stopped and thought about her age and how she had lived through the depression. She would come to visit and I would cook and she would literally save 3 peas in a Tupperware. When I asked why she would say you never know you may want to make soup (with 3 peas and 3 children under the age of 2? Doubt it). She paid $300 to have her microwave repaired when a new one would have cost much less! These things drove me crazy! At first. But her frugality made her a millionaire. Her frugality afforded us gifts over the years, a few thousand here or there, for our children which we then put into college accounts, our kids have no tuition debt. She also came out and helped me with my 2 yr old when I was put on bed rest. She and my FIL took all the night feedings when the twins were newborns so I could sleep and recover from my c-section. Her frugality was just part of her and who she was.

This sounds like mental illness (yes she needs to be seen by a professional) Poor or not this is abnormal behavior to the point of dangerous actions. There are thrift stores everywhere ask yourself "why a wedding dress?" on my day? Something is not right. The way you describe her frugality is beyond "poverty mindset". Keep your eyes open for mental changes.

If anything I think this shows how a woman has mastered appreciating all the things that go into making up her family dynamics. It's easy- and reasonable- to say WTF! Instead she found a way to incorporate all the wonderful sacrifices her MIL made for her family. That's love.

I was wearing my royal blue wedding dress and after it was tailored I specifically asked each female attending our wedding, not to wear this colour. My grandmother basically raised me, she knew this is my favorite color, before I ordered my dress she already got a tailor made costume of royal blue, she wanted to surprise me with the color. I wanted to keep my choice of colour a secret for as long as possible. I believe we both looked stunning with our blond hair and blue eyes and it stays a cute story.

Maybe she didn't get to have a nice wedding, maybe she never had the chance of wearing a nice white dress and she saw a very cheap bargain and went for it, I don't think had evil intentions having such a tough and humble background. And it's really sweet that the bride stand up for her MIL and not didn't get annoyed and made a scene about it. Well done. There's a lot of bridezillas out there and I'm just glad she wasn't one of them. My MIL never had the opportunity to have a proper wedding and I never dreamed about a wedding I was more looking forward to the married life and being a mother, so I told her to do my wedding like she dreamed of having hers and I tell you all I wish she would've dressed up more because she deserves it.

It was her wedding. It's her MIL. It's her family and all the weird quirks that go with it. You should all be laughing at the fun of it all, because SHE IS. Her opinion is the only thing that matters. I loved this story! 😂😂😂 So wonderful and unique!

It's a BS story some woman made up for clout. All the reasons behind why a MIL would wear a wedding dress to a wedding because of a bargain and her poor upbringing is total bull S**t. People do anything for attention, likes, followers, and so forth.

She didn't have to defend her mother in law by somewhat embarrassing her with how she grew up and what she does. She could've kept it simple and say she didn't have a problem and everything went well.
