People In This Online Group Know Some Pretty Disturbing Facts About The World And Shared Them For Others To Learn In 2016, about 11.5 million documents leaked from a tax office in Panama (tax haven). It revealed that nearly all rich people on Earth are part of an enormous criminal conspiracy to evade taxes and hoard stolen wealth. Absolutely nothing was done about it legally. If you want to know more, look up Panama Papers.

I am watching the mythologising of a person in real time, it's insane. Daphne had a part in exposing Maltese politicians involved in the Panama Papers case, but she was NOT the journalist that 'broke the story''. What happened to her is bad enough without this level of hyperbole.

Not exactly. Something was done. The investigative journalist who exposed the scandal, Daphne Caruana Galizia, was killed in a car-bombing. So somebody did do something. Just not the thing that we were all hoping for.

There was something done. The reporter that broke the story was murdered in a car bombing. Daphne Galizia. And yes, nothing was done because we should all know by now that the rich are only interested in staying rich and getting richer. They own the big companies, they control research and development. They dominate the stock market. They control most of the world's media. Of course nothing was done.

Oh, the 1% are going to face such a day of reckoning by the 99%. It may be soon, as I see us coming to a breaking point. The 1% forget just how outnumbered they are—and that their “staff” comes from our ranks, not theirs. Who do you think the handyman, maid, and security guard (all very likely underpaid and badly treated by their wealthy employers as well) are going to join when the rest of us are disarming and climbing over the security fence.

Here is what I don’t get. Most of the super rich got there with the help of systems funded by tax payers, they continue to live benefitting by systems paid for by tax payers, yet when it comes their turn to give back to secure those systems continue to work for them, their families and everyone else, they are not interested. They seem to think their decisions to hoarse their wealth and not contribute to the systems that supported their journey won’t negatively impact them, but it does.

It's incredible how one little sentence can snowball. The other day I saw a post here on BP claiming that Daphne Caruana Galizia was the journalist who broke the Panama Papers story. I commented at the time that it's not true, but didn't think much of it. I come back here today and see several people making the same claim, presumably based off the same post from a few days back. DCG did expose some people in the Maltese establishment and connect them to the Panama Papers, but she certainly wasn't even instrumental in breaking the original story. If you don't believe me please check this fact check source --> https://eu.usatoday.com/story/news/factcheck/2021/10/07/fact-check-journalist-killed-bomb-not-part-panama-papers-probe/6018595001/

People In This Online Group Know Some Pretty Disturbing Facts About The World And Shared Them For Others To Learn Bacteria antibiotic resistance is on a whole other level. Even In the 13 years I’ve been in a medical microbiology lab; antibiotic resistant has really become rampant. It’s not going to stop either. The bacteria multiply and evolve so quickly that even the most effective “bombacillins” will become obsolete. we are going to reach a breaking point where even things like a simple cut or a sinus infection could become life threatening. Don’t take antibiotics like a Z-pak for a cold. It’s most likely viral and the antibiotics are just superfluous. If you are prescribed antibiotics finish them.

Everybody on the planet needs to understand this. Misuse of antibiotics has created a resistance that we now have several strains of bacteria that will KILL us, and we have no antidote. Never, ever take antibiotics unless they are prescribed. Do not request or demand them if you have a virus, because they only work with bacterial infection, not viral. Listen to your doctors. Always finish the course. Taking them when you don't need them, or stopping too early is what causes resistance in humans, to the point where most antibiotics don't work anymore. It's also allowing bacteria to develop that are resistant to all our antibiotics. This situation has the potential to make Covid look like playtime.

This needs to be understood (should be known already) by doctors as well! I've been to more than two doctors that prescribed antibiotics without caring much for the diagnosis! This is malpractice and it should stop! And also this could be prevented by law! Antibiotics should be available only by prescription

Not just humans. Poultry industry uses LUDICROUS amounts of antibiotics. To keep up with the demand, most farms use growth hormones and antibiotics to speed up production. More often than not a chicken is slaughtered before drugs are out of its system. They try to regulate this, but means of control are next to none. So yes, don't misuse antibiotics, but also lay off KFC and check your supplier before your next Sunday roast.

Yes and no. You probably won't die from a minor infection (cut finger etc) but you will certainly not be able to safely undergo major surgery. Most of the problem is the farming industry who routinely feed large doses of antibiotics to animals (especially pigs) to hasten growth. This then gets antibiotics in to the mammalian food chain.

Most resistant bacteria strains form in humans not in farming. That's why you should buy organic food whenever possible. The organic associations do not allow the broad usage of drugs. And yes, that also goes for vegetables

There is a lot of stuff that can cause a trauma response - even a simple change can trigger a traumatic response. Heck, extreme unremembered pain on an infant can rewire the brain too - abuse and unanaethetised medical procedures (which used to be common on infants, ew) such as circumcision (which is still done in a lot of places without anaesthetic) have been documented to cause such changes.

I have spent over a decade in therapy, on and off, to heal the effects of Adverse Childhood Experiences. Wish I hadn't had to but worth it. And I'm aware I'm one of the lucky ones. Initially I cancelled all 'unnecessary' spending (e.g. the bus, cheaper food, very few luxuries) so I could afford it and even that is beyond some people's ability. Also, I live in the UK and sessions were £30 each at the time.

My dad couldn't intervene because he worried about me as we had nowhere to go. Only my grandfather stood by me. But the whole experience came back to haunt me when I turned 16. I work in this field and it's truly heartbreaking some days. The times I've gone home and cried, not for me but because I can't "fix" a particular "problem". Children who live with this hold nothing back....NOTHING, once they trust you. YOU become theirs safe person and safe space. Social "welfare", social "workers" constantly tell us that these children "belong with their family". Oftentimes the best thing for these children is to move them to a safe person in a safe place. Show them that, regardless of where they came from, what they have been through, how their background affects who they currently are - they matter, they are loved and what they came from does not necessarily dictate who they will become. Give them an honest, loving way to succeed.

And this is what conservatives don't understand about not allowing women access to safe and low cost abortions... (preferably free and covered by ALL insurances would be ideal!) ... they don't understand that these unwanted children end up in abusive homes, taken from their parents, forced into foster homes that are not always great... sometimes worse than the homes they were taken out of.... then they age out of the system and they're targeted for sex trafficking.. and half of them end up homeless.... why can't ppl understand that safe, legal and affordable abortions not only prevent women from having children they don't want or can't take care of... but it legit helps curb poverty, homelessness & child abuse.

Modern homelessness takes its roots in the late 1600s in the new world when they couldn’t afford the taxes and were put out on the street. Right before the American Revolution, they were forced into working, but after the revolution, they were kicked out of their homes and thus the homelessness problem in America, at least

The answer to EVERYTHING (bad politics, homelessness, abandoned kids, resource consumption, trash, warming) is fewer people. That's it. Simple. Easy. Not necessarily, we had those issues before overpopulation. Plus, there are 3 empty homes for every 1 homeless person. It's not as simple as not having children (which is a human right) its about being good people, taking care of one another, our planet and natural habits. It boils down to greed and people simply being horrible people.

So sad.. We used to have gray foxes where I live. Regularly saw them when I was a child, but I haven't seen one in over 30 years. We also used to see whole families of deer on the open fields across from my house every year. Now I see 1 or 2 deer a year...at most. This is due to construction of more roads and gated subdivisions. In fact, several protected wildlife areas where I live have recently been sold to private developers. A few years ago, they destroyed another protected area (used as a breeding ground for the rapidly dwindling local jackrabbit & geese populations) to build a hotel & office buildings. About 75% of the open space that existed here when I was a kid is gone.

This makes me sick. All hope is not lost though because there are some very determined and dedicated people out there who are helping to prevent more animals from going extinct. On top of that, San Diego zoo has their frozen zoo where they're collecting the DNA from all endangered animals just in case that does happen. Obviously that's not the point and it shouldn't have to come that.. but it's hard to not lose hope in humanity when you're only faced with the negatives of everything and you're not looking at what's being done to help the situation. It doesn't make what's happening any easier to swallow. But we can't lose hope. Look at what they're doing with Amur leopards & tigers! Their numbers were going downhill so fast and now, in the last decade they've been steadily increasing thanks to habitat conservation, protected parks, stricter laws on poaching, more funding going to conservation efforts etc. we ALL just need to do our part to change this s**t! ALL OF US!

In the process, they destroy habitat for amphibians, birds, small mammals. They destroy slow growing oak and endangered plants. They can strip entire areas in a single season. Even hunting cannot keep up with the sheer number of herds... because humans did away with their natural predators.

Debunked, scientists noted that the other whales CAN hear that, they just can't answer in the same frequency, it's not outside their frequency to hear, but someone made this click-bait a few years back and now everyone thinks there's some isolated whale out there. They don't even know which species it is or where it is, it could already be travelling with another pod of whales and have many friends. Also its voice lowers every year, it now sings at 49Hertz so the other whales can definitely hear him.

Sense of impending doom is listed as an official symptom of anaphylaxis. I have an autoimmune condition that causes frequent unpredictable anaphylaxis, and often the first thing I notice when I'm starting to get sick is a wave of intense anxious dread that feels like it's out of nowhere and I can't identify anything I had been thinking about beforehand that could have caused it. I've gotten good at picking it out from the other kinds of anxiety I might sometimes feel; it's a very specific sort of feeling. Next comes sudden fatigue, cramps in my stomach, and bright red ears and cheeks before finally, the most obvious and dangerous symptoms kick in.

I've had 4 blood transfusions. The first time and this really freaked me out, the nurse stood there and stared at me while the blood first started to enter my body. I asked her what she was doing and she said, "I'm looking for any kind of reaction (meaning death)." After about an hour she left my hospital room. The next 3 times, I didn't care and went along with whatever I was doing (probably coloring - I did a lot of coloring in my month long stay in ICU.

People In This Online Group Know Some Pretty Disturbing Facts About The World And Shared Them For Others To Learn The way we experience life is not linear, but logarithmic. We’ve all noticed that a year keeps feeling shorter, but it’s because there’s a mathematical formula for it. It’s called Weber’s Law. Life is truly too short. Before we ever notice, it’s over.

It's not a matter of spacetime warping but rather of perception. When you are young, your experiences are much more limited than when you are old. 1 day of your life is a significantly longer amount of time relative to how long you've been alive at age 6 than it is at age 16, and far longer than at age 36. Thus it feels far longer to you. The actual amount of time that passes is the same as ever, but your brain does not process it like that.

Best way I’ve heard it is that when we are a year old, one year is 100% of our lives. At two, it’s already down to 50% of our lives. So the older we get the shorter a year is in comparison to those we’ve already lived. It is depressing.

For the people confused: Victorians were obsessed with death and the macabre, but europeans have been crazy about mummies for centuries before that. The thing with Victorians and Egyptian mummies is that they got a bit confused. Mummies got their names from the Arabic word for pissasphalt, mumiya, which was used as a medicine, and betumen, which looks like pissasphalt and was used in the mummies embalming process, began to be referred.tl as mumia. So they thought that mummies were the source of this feel-good medicine and that by grinding the mummies and consuming the powder in some sort of syrup or applying directly to a wound, they would be all healthy and cured of all illnesses. And different parts of the mummies cured different diseases because... Yeah, at this point, why not? They also held lavish mummy unwrapping parties and kept mummies as curiosities.

One of the few bipartisan issues in this country. The vast majority of the public hates this, believing that Members of Congress should not be able to trade individual stocks: 76% of all voters (70% of Dems, 78% of GOP, 80% of independents) - only 5% of people approve of it. You know who's among that 5% though? The majority of Congress which has repeatedly has said no way, with both the Dems and the GOP standing together. Want to know how to bring people together across the aisle? Make it about politicians blatantly enriching themselves - the public will hate it (together in unity) and the pols will love it (together in unity). Ain't America great?

Congress also gets a starting salary of almost $175,000 a year, but only in session 6 months a year; that's like $600 dollars an hour. An serve 12 years at a time. Who decides if they serve longer; other congresspeople. This allows them a tremendous amount of power, and influence. An then theirs the lobbyist! OMG don't even get me started on those leeches. They line the pockets of Congress with more cash then they can hold; just to get their agendas pushed through. Congress embraced the dark side.

They didnt know how to give babies anesthetics without killing, so it was the only safe way to operate. Once they figured out how to administer it to babies they started doing so. There is a 5% error rate in adults with dosages because its as much an art and estimation as it is a science. This is a well debunked myth that just wont die

When will this debunked myth die out, it keeps getting posted here. This is 100% FALSE. They knew for a long time that babies could feel pain. They didnt know how to give babies anesthetics without killing, so it was the only safe way to operate. Once they figured out how to administer it to babies they started doing so. There is a 5% error rate in adults with dosages because its as much an art and estimation as it is a science. This is a well debunked myth that just wont die

I used to volunteer at a local charity for adults with learning difficulties. One of the new guys that joined was around 30 and on the more severe end of the scale compared to most that attended (non verbal, violent outbursts etc.) I assumed like most there, that he was born that way, until his brother gushed to me about his doctorates, how smart and academic he was, and how he had suffered brain damage in a car accident previous year.

I just recently learned that snakes (don't know if it's all of them) can move forward without side-to-side undulation. I think they said they use their scales and they do it when they need to move silently, as when hunting. The whole body just silently moves forward in a straight line and it's really freaky to see.

Let's be honest, being a vegetarian isn't a thing in the animal world. Herbivores are set up to digest and metabolise plant material, but it doesn't harm them in any way to take in animals. Nor do they particularly care if they do accidentally munch up a tiny mammal or amphibian along with their leaves.

No, most of the time they wouldn't. According to the "Not One Step Back" order, commanders who ordered unauthorized retreats would be tried and executed in prison, and fleeing soldiers would be arrested and sent to penal batallions, to clear mines or suicide missions, but they were rarely killed on the spot. It was bad for morale and Soviet authorities knew that.

1 in 3 killed in WWII was Russian, the Allies had representation from a huge swathe of countries but Russia took the brunt of the deaths. Terrible conditions on the front with Germany and the fact they defended a huge land front meant they suffered far more than most.

I am not a fan if Russia but the continued downplaying of Russia's role in the outcome of WWII in the US is a travesty. The biggest battles of WWII in Europe, by far, were fought between the Russians and Germans. Germany had already lost the war by the time D-Day occurred. Thankfully D-Day did more to save Western Europe from the communists than it did from the Nazis. However I digress, Russia (the USSR) deserves more credit for WWII than the US gives them. The Pacific theater is an entirely different animal on the other hand.

I don't get people who obsess over this sort of thing. Who cares if "your bloodline ends with you"? You don't have a duty to carry on your family's name, nor to make sure that your specific genetic material gets passed on to the next generation. There's plenty of people who will continue the species without you. And don't get me started about the idiocy of "male line descendants". Genetics don't work like that, only social structures do!

I wont ever have children (specially after my hysterectomy!) and I dont feel bad at all for not reproducing. But I still find it weird to think that I am the first one in my direct ancestors to not reproduce. First in millions of years. Its crazy. 700my if you consider only animals and not bacteria

You don't have to made a child to have an influence on life and the world! Teachers do this all the time. Do good yourself and/or teach empathy and pass along knowledge. Einstein influenced a generation by writing and teaching.

I’ve never wanted children. I’m happy without them, but sometimes I wonder if every ancestor might yell, “We fought our way out of nothing and out of the seas and out of the jungle and out of the savannah and spread across the world. Who the hell do you think you are to say, ‘No thanks. I’ll just stop here?!’” I mean, can you imagine what an ancestor who fought off starvation, disease and lions or saber-toothed tigers to feed their family would think of a fat, TV-watching, junk food-eating descendent just…not wanting kids?

Yeah I’ve thought about that too, and also as biological organisms we solely exist to reproduce only our intelligence makes us think that we shouldn’t. Existence is weird.

Chances are, with all the black holes/antimatter we are now observing in the universe, that we will all get sucked up into the void at some point, and then maybe something else will be created when the black holes are all full, and suddenly, new universes will be born.

    UpQuarkDownQuark

There is very, very little antimatter in the universe, and that’s been the case since immediately after the Big Bang. The most favored scenario now is the continued accelerating expansion of space, so much so that any stars or galaxies outside of our immediate local group will end up beyond the expansion horizon and be lost to us forever. Eventually star formation will cease, black holes will evaporate, and even protons themselves may decay, leaving everything in darkness and the smallest fraction of a degree above absolute zero. This will take, wait for it, a billion, billion, billion, billion, billion, billion, billion, billion, billion, billion, billion, billion years.

I don't know that that is true for all blind people. I have worked with a variety of disabled people. One was a young man who was born blind and he said there was definitely a difference for him when he was completely in the dark, versus turning his face towards the sun. Also, blind is still the legal term used even for people who still have some vision. Depending on your type of blindness, you may still have light receptors within your eye sockets, or rudimentary eye formation that can distinguish certain shadows.

I could be wrong, but it used to be only 7% of people were called (as it was known when I worked with blind people) 'black blind' aka couldn't see anything. Blind people can often see shades but not in sufficient amounts to be considered partially sighted.

Depression, drug abuse, anti-social behaviour, are all very common in places where there isn't much for young people to do. that's why it's an epidemic in rural America. Add to that the seasonal changes in the amount of sunlight and you have a recipe for disaster for a lot of people.

It has nothing to do with people killing themselves because they dont like the outdoors. That statement is laughable. However the issue is not. It is an issue for arctic countries. So the leding theory is that the light changes from 22-24 hour sunlight to 0-5 hours of sunlight between summer and winter causes seasonal depressions. If you are lucky to have an office job, but unlucky enough not to have a window, you may not see daylight for 3 months out of the year.

This is what life would have been like for many ordinary people even a hundred years ago. As so much work was done by hand they probably had less time and energy to notice.

I think it might also be possible to develop a cancer and have your body kill it off before it can manifest itself enough to be detected. It kind of feels like cancer is a natural biological side-effect (you have to figure that mis-translated cells happen quite a bit with so much that has to be copied), and that the body has to have a method of dealing with that which can itself fail.

    Body will self-destruct in 5..

Tumor necrosis factor is just one of the many mechanisms the body identifies and destroys damaged cells, including cancer cells.

Know your family history. Get tested when and where appropriate. Do self checks on the obvious parts, skin, breasts, genitals. Half of all humans beings will get cancer. Good news is, advances in medicine mean that most of us will survive it.

Most men will have prostate cancer when they die. But not know about it, because that isn't what kills them.

I heard from a veterinarian that all dogs get cancer if they live long enough and probably people, too.

Considering the many cases of cancer that have occurred on both sides of my family, this is a pretty "comforting" thought...

There are cancers that people die with, rather than of. Prostate cancer is one of them, it's usually very slow growing.

The paradox of existence: we know only "now" on a personal level, therefore "now" seems more relevant and important than any time that was or that will be.

We are mere atoms in an ocean of time. Millions and billions of years are just a drop in the bucket. The universe is so vast that nobody can see its edge and the edge is getting farther and farther away from us with each passing second

Yep. And every person throughout history has thought theirs is the most important age in which to be alive.

Hello! Allow me to be pedantic for a moment. There are 13.8 billion years behind you, and yes, countless trillions ahead of you. And when the universe is sparse and dark and cold enough will time have any meaning at all?

There is a lot of metals left just in the state of nevada. Less then 5% has been mined. Don't think this is right. We are not going to run out in 8 years. This is only counting what has already been produced not what is still out there. I deal with mining reports all the time. Just one large mine here says it will take them another 20+ years to get it all.

They could be refering to rare earth metals (Yttrium, Promethium, Lutetium, etc) which are in very short supply. Some may be generally 'plentiful' but in such low concentrations as to be difficult to collect without great expense.

Not true. There are no rare metals used in phone touchscreens. Most touch screens today are ITO touch screens, based on Indium, Tin, and Oxygen. I just googled it...haha
