People In This Online Group Know Some Pretty Disturbing Facts About The World And Shared Them For Others To Learn
We don’t know so much about the world. We often hear that humans have explored only a tiny fraction of what hides in the ocean and if you think about it, we know even less about what lies in space. So when we do know something, we want to share, especially when there is a perfect opportunity.
Like when someone like Reddit user CallofDutysVeryOwn asks a question “What Is The Most Disturbing Fact You Know?” It seems that other Reddit users like reading and finding out new things and they might sometimes stumble upon something that disturbs them as they created a huge thread that has over 17k answers. Bored Panda collected the most interesting ones for you to enjoy and not to be disturbed too much.

In 2016, about 11.5 million documents leaked from a tax office in Panama (tax haven). It revealed that nearly all rich people on Earth are part of an enormous criminal conspiracy to evade taxes and hoard stolen wealth. Absolutely nothing was done about it legally. If you want to know more, look up Panama Papers.
I am watching the mythologising of a person in real time, it's insane. Daphne had a part in exposing Maltese politicians involved in the Panama Papers case, but she was NOT the journalist that 'broke the story''. What happened to her is bad enough without this level of hyperbole.
Load More Replies...Not exactly. Something was done. The investigative journalist who exposed the scandal, Daphne Caruana Galizia, was killed in a car-bombing. So somebody did do something. Just not the thing that we were all hoping for.
There was something done. The reporter that broke the story was murdered in a car bombing. Daphne Galizia. And yes, nothing was done because we should all know by now that the rich are only interested in staying rich and getting richer. They own the big companies, they control research and development. They dominate the stock market. They control most of the world's media. Of course nothing was done.
Yep and that's also why ghislaine maxwell is getting a new trial or will be let off bc they don't want her to release all she knows about the rich being pedophiles
Load More Replies...Oh, the 1% are going to face such a day of reckoning by the 99%. It may be soon, as I see us coming to a breaking point. The 1% forget just how outnumbered they are—and that their “staff” comes from our ranks, not theirs. Who do you think the handyman, maid, and security guard (all very likely underpaid and badly treated by their wealthy employers as well) are going to join when the rest of us are disarming and climbing over the security fence.
History unfortunately shows there are always enough people willing to fight for the 1% in return for crumbs.
Load More Replies...Here is what I don’t get. Most of the super rich got there with the help of systems funded by tax payers, they continue to live benefitting by systems paid for by tax payers, yet when it comes their turn to give back to secure those systems continue to work for them, their families and everyone else, they are not interested. They seem to think their decisions to hoarse their wealth and not contribute to the systems that supported their journey won’t negatively impact them, but it does.
And now we're too busy with covid to keep the investigation going, and by the time it's done (and by the look of this being posted as something that people didn't realise), people will have completely forgotten about it.
It's incredible how one little sentence can snowball. The other day I saw a post here on BP claiming that Daphne Caruana Galizia was the journalist who broke the Panama Papers story. I commented at the time that it's not true, but didn't think much of it. I come back here today and see several people making the same claim, presumably based off the same post from a few days back. DCG did expose some people in the Maltese establishment and connect them to the Panama Papers, but she certainly wasn't even instrumental in breaking the original story. If you don't believe me please check this fact check source --> https://eu.usatoday.com/story/news/factcheck/2021/10/07/fact-check-journalist-killed-bomb-not-part-panama-papers-probe/6018595001/
Bacteria antibiotic resistance is on a whole other level. Even In the 13 years I’ve been in a medical microbiology lab; antibiotic resistant has really become rampant. It’s not going to stop either. The bacteria multiply and evolve so quickly that even the most effective “bombacillins” will become obsolete. we are going to reach a breaking point where even things like a simple cut or a sinus infection could become life threatening. Don’t take antibiotics like a Z-pak for a cold. It’s most likely viral and the antibiotics are just superfluous. If you are prescribed antibiotics finish them.
Everybody on the planet needs to understand this. Misuse of antibiotics has created a resistance that we now have several strains of bacteria that will KILL us, and we have no antidote. Never, ever take antibiotics unless they are prescribed. Do not request or demand them if you have a virus, because they only work with bacterial infection, not viral. Listen to your doctors. Always finish the course. Taking them when you don't need them, or stopping too early is what causes resistance in humans, to the point where most antibiotics don't work anymore. It's also allowing bacteria to develop that are resistant to all our antibiotics. This situation has the potential to make Covid look like playtime.
This needs to be understood (should be known already) by doctors as well! I've been to more than two doctors that prescribed antibiotics without caring much for the diagnosis! This is malpractice and it should stop! And also this could be prevented by law! Antibiotics should be available only by prescription
Not just humans. Poultry industry uses LUDICROUS amounts of antibiotics. To keep up with the demand, most farms use growth hormones and antibiotics to speed up production. More often than not a chicken is slaughtered before drugs are out of its system. They try to regulate this, but means of control are next to none. So yes, don't misuse antibiotics, but also lay off KFC and check your supplier before your next Sunday roast.
Yes and no. You probably won't die from a minor infection (cut finger etc) but you will certainly not be able to safely undergo major surgery. Most of the problem is the farming industry who routinely feed large doses of antibiotics to animals (especially pigs) to hasten growth. This then gets antibiotics in to the mammalian food chain.
Most resistant bacteria strains form in humans not in farming. That's why you should buy organic food whenever possible. The organic associations do not allow the broad usage of drugs. And yes, that also goes for vegetables

I should have had tubes put in my ears as a child because I kept getting ear infections. Instead, my pediatrician just kept giving me antibiotics.

I am disturbed by the fact that the internet has given an outlet to all the idiots and attention craving people. for example, I just watched a 747 pilot debunking titk tok videos that promote dangerous behavior on planes. That's a lot of energy exertion to set things right. And this is the tip of the iceberg.
And the psychologists who debunk the supposed psych tips from tik tok etc
there was something like this on Bored Panda
Load More Replies...Note to Bored Panda: do not promote content from TikTok unless that content is fact-checked or provides a solid base of sound sources.
hell, do not promote content from ANYWHERE unless it's proven or fact checked
Load More Replies...Brandolini's Law: "The amount of energy needed to refute bullshit is an order of magnitude larger than is needed to produce it."
Exactly. I have three utterly stupid friends who send me conspiracy memes. It takes me like 10 minutes to debunk each stupid meme. They will send like 5-6 at a time and that kills like an hour of my time. They ignore the debunks as well. My conclusion is: let stupid people get plague and die. Much simpler.
Load More Replies...Lies will spread around the world before the truth has even got it's shoes on. The problem is that because the false videos have to get so popular that they come to the attention of someone who can call BS, that it's already too late in some circumstances to post the truth.
Truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it. Ignorance may deride it. But at the end, there it is. ~Churchill
Load More Replies...Yes, many of the worst are banded together in groups...collectively known as "politicians".
I had normal parents before the internet. Parents who went to the doctor, believed in medicine, listened to secular music, and ate normal foods. Now, I have religious zealots who believe everything is a scam, everyone is out to get them, and only a chosen few know the truth.
It is not just Tik Tok, it is everywhere. Mis-information has made it to mainstream everything. I have seen so many 'how to ' videos that could kill you if you tried them.
The effects that trauma have on development are chilling. Trauma completely rewires the brain and makes everything from forming attachment to problem solving more difficult. Intervention and treatment can bring about great healing, although it is often a difficult and long road.
The more I learn, the more it seems that all dysfunction is rooted in early childhood.
And people still think its okay when children get hurt and stuff cuz "they'll get over it"
Load More Replies...You mean being beaten for years then thrown on the streets at 15 gave me anxiety, depression, trust issues and hyper-independency?! Never! lol
No child should ever have to experience those things, and I am so sorry you did. Child abuse breaks my heart.
Load More Replies...Adverse Childhood Events (ACEs) scores can be used when assessing trauma linked health conditions such as strokes, cardiac ailments, and other complex health conditions. Dr. Nadine Burke Harris and colleagues have done amazing research in the area. Dr Burke Harris also has an amazing TedTalk. https://www.cdc.gov/violenceprevention/aces/index.html
I took the aces test. First time, I got a 7-8. After a few therapy sessions, I went down to 5.
Load More Replies...There is a lot of stuff that can cause a trauma response - even a simple change can trigger a traumatic response. Heck, extreme unremembered pain on an infant can rewire the brain too - abuse and unanaethetised medical procedures (which used to be common on infants, ew) such as circumcision (which is still done in a lot of places without anaesthetic) have been documented to cause such changes.
Yep- and the longer you wait to treat the trauma, the more you let it grow, the harder and longer it takes to heal.
A colleague of mine in her 40s was thrown out at 15 in one of the worst winters we've had. Even now, cold weather triggers ptsd
I have spent over a decade in therapy, on and off, to heal the effects of Adverse Childhood Experiences. Wish I hadn't had to but worth it. And I'm aware I'm one of the lucky ones. Initially I cancelled all 'unnecessary' spending (e.g. the bus, cheaper food, very few luxuries) so I could afford it and even that is beyond some people's ability. Also, I live in the UK and sessions were £30 each at the time.
I have seen my mom given shock treatment because my granny never treated her right. For her everything she did was wrong. She would belittle her in front of everyone. My dad couldn't intervene because he worried about me as we had nowhere to go. Only my grandfather stood by me. But the whole experience came back to haunt me when I turned 16. Depression and bipolar disorder. Can't function normally without medication.
I work in this field and it's truly heartbreaking some days. The times I've gone home and cried, not for me but because I can't "fix" a particular "problem". Children who live with this hold nothing back....NOTHING, once they trust you. YOU become theirs safe person and safe space. Social "welfare", social "workers" constantly tell us that these children "belong with their family". Oftentimes the best thing for these children is to move them to a safe person in a safe place. Show them that, regardless of where they came from, what they have been through, how their background affects who they currently are - they matter, they are loved and what they came from does not necessarily dictate who they will become. Give them an honest, loving way to succeed.
Half of the homeless people in America were in the foster care system at some point in their lives
I can imagine. They turn 18 and suddenly they have zero support system. I would imagine most of the other half are war veterans and/or people with mental illness. Every one of these people deserves a roof over their head.
Absolutely. At least a chance for permanent shelter and help if it seems claustrophobic. Oddly enough, going from the streets to shelter can be overwhelming. Suddenly there are responsibilities, chores, obligations. It can even trigger a bout of claustrophobia. Source: social worker, veteran, formerly homeless experience.
Load More Replies...There a direct correlation in rise of crime where there are forced births. Women in red states that have lost their access to healthcare and are forced to give birth see crime rise about 16-18 yrs after they lost that healthcare
And this is what conservatives don't understand about not allowing women access to safe and low cost abortions... (preferably free and covered by ALL insurances would be ideal!) ... they don't understand that these unwanted children end up in abusive homes, taken from their parents, forced into foster homes that are not always great... sometimes worse than the homes they were taken out of.... then they age out of the system and they're targeted for sex trafficking.. and half of them end up homeless.... why can't ppl understand that safe, legal and affordable abortions not only prevent women from having children they don't want or can't take care of... but it legit helps curb poverty, homelessness & child abuse.
The irony is that this picture wasn't even taken in America! If you click on the photographer's link under the post (Sebastiaan ter Burg), you'll see that this was taken in Seoul, South Korea. (Come on BP, can't you at least source some homeless pictures from the country you're writing about?)
Photo is just to represent, no need to be shot in the same country they are speaking about
Load More Replies...Modern homelessness takes its roots in the late 1600s in the new world when they couldn’t afford the taxes and were put out on the street. Right before the American Revolution, they were forced into working, but after the revolution, they were kicked out of their homes and thus the homelessness problem in America, at least
Blame capitalism. Its impossible yo adopt unless your some stuck up rich you know what it seems
Do not say that one leads to the other! Many homeless people are Veterans, but that does not mean that you join the Army and will be homeless and alone.
60% of all wild life has vanished since 1970 and still going down.
And yet whenever I mention that less human population (birth control) would help EVERYTHING, I am ALWAYS met with mean people, narrow minds and a determination to keep procreating. The answer to EVERYTHING (bad politics, homelessness, abandoned kids, resource consumption, trash, warming) is fewer people. That's it. Simple. Easy. Everyone can still enjoy themselves, just doesn't always have to end in more children.
Not necessarily, we had those issues before overpopulation. Plus, there are 3 empty homes for every 1 homeless person. It's not as simple as not having children (which is a human right) its about being good people, taking care of one another, our planet and natural habits. It boils down to greed and people simply being horrible people.
Load More Replies...So sad.. We used to have gray foxes where I live. Regularly saw them when I was a child, but I haven't seen one in over 30 years. We also used to see whole families of deer on the open fields across from my house every year. Now I see 1 or 2 deer a year...at most. This is due to construction of more roads and gated subdivisions. In fact, several protected wildlife areas where I live have recently been sold to private developers. A few years ago, they destroyed another protected area (used as a breeding ground for the rapidly dwindling local jackrabbit & geese populations) to build a hotel & office buildings. About 75% of the open space that existed here when I was a kid is gone.
This makes me sick. All hope is not lost though because there are some very determined and dedicated people out there who are helping to prevent more animals from going extinct. On top of that, San Diego zoo has their frozen zoo where they're collecting the DNA from all endangered animals just in case that does happen. Obviously that's not the point and it shouldn't have to come that.. but it's hard to not lose hope in humanity when you're only faced with the negatives of everything and you're not looking at what's being done to help the situation. It doesn't make what's happening any easier to swallow. But we can't lose hope. Look at what they're doing with Amur leopards & tigers! Their numbers were going downhill so fast and now, in the last decade they've been steadily increasing thanks to habitat conservation, protected parks, stricter laws on poaching, more funding going to conservation efforts etc. we ALL just need to do our part to change this s**t! ALL OF US!
Not whitetail deer, though. They mate at 6 months, often produce twins. They eat 5 pounds of vegetation per animal, per day. In the process, they destroy habitat for amphibians, birds, small mammals. They destroy slow growing oak and endangered plants. They can strip entire areas in a single season. Even hunting cannot keep up with the sheer number of herds... because humans did away with their natural predators.
There is a whale called 52 Blue that only sings at a frequency of 52 Hertz, meaning it can't communicate with other whales. It is nicknamed the "loneliest whale on the planet.
Oooh that's sad... Why not to record or alter other recordings to 52 hertz and play it for this whale so it's not so lonely....
That's a nice idea but could be even more cruel, I could make it go to search the "whale" that communicated with it.
Load More Replies...Debunked, scientists noted that the other whales CAN hear that, they just can't answer in the same frequency, it's not outside their frequency to hear, but someone made this click-bait a few years back and now everyone thinks there's some isolated whale out there. They don't even know which species it is or where it is, it could already be travelling with another pod of whales and have many friends. Also its voice lowers every year, it now sings at 49Hertz so the other whales can definitely hear him.
I thought I heard they just found others like him. I could be wrong though.
You are correct, the whale was spotted with other whales
Load More Replies...BTS wrote a song about loneliness using this whale. The song is Whalien 52. I highly recommend to look at the lyrics translations and then listen to the song.
There's a direct correlation to forced birth and crime too. Women that don't have access to healthcare and have unwanted children in,for example red states, see crime go up exponentially 16 years after they lose that healthcare
Oh man, can you even imagine operating on a whale? You'd need a scalpel the size of an industrial grade shovel!
Load More Replies...It’s actually really great book based on 52! It’s called a song for a whale, if any Otis interested in reading it. It’s about a Deaf (and deaf) girl that makes a song just for him. It’s really heartwarming and I recommend it 100000%
The Velociraptor noises in the Jurrasic Park/World franchise are actually the sounds of tortoises mating.

If u get the wrong blood type for a transfusion, one of the symptoms is "a sense of impending doom"
I'd never be able to tell, since I have a sense of impending doom on the daily.
Well, in this day and age you'd be right on the money there, sigh.
Load More Replies...Oh wow...this is interesting. Like your body saying, "I can't be sure...but I think we're gonna die?"
There are a few "keyword" type symptoms that don't really seem to make sense. One of them is "the worst headache of my life." That kind of statement seems like someone just complaining, but apparently it's something that people who are having a stroke say.
Load More Replies...Yeah, I've read that. I also have read that people about to have a serious heart attack get a sudden very strong feeling that they are going to die, before it happens. The brain is an interesting thing.
Definitely this happens! When we cardiovert with medication patients will often experience the same feeling.
Load More Replies...Everyone has this sense. People generally know when they're dieing. It's a really curious one because it is, by it's very definition something they haven't ever experienced it, but patients always know what it means.
Do you work in a hospital? I read an account from an ambulance driver once who said the absolute most common things for patients to say immediately before dying were "I don't feel so good" and "something's wrong". Scary.
Load More Replies...Same with a Tachycardia reversal drug. I hate that stuff. Both cause the same feeling that you are about to die
Sense of impending doom is listed as an official symptom of anaphylaxis. I have an autoimmune condition that causes frequent unpredictable anaphylaxis, and often the first thing I notice when I'm starting to get sick is a wave of intense anxious dread that feels like it's out of nowhere and I can't identify anything I had been thinking about beforehand that could have caused it. I've gotten good at picking it out from the other kinds of anxiety I might sometimes feel; it's a very specific sort of feeling. Next comes sudden fatigue, cramps in my stomach, and bright red ears and cheeks before finally, the most obvious and dangerous symptoms kick in.
Agree. We were taught in EMT training that some people will have "impending doom" as a symptom. Especially for heart attacks.
I've had 4 blood transfusions. The first time and this really freaked me out, the nurse stood there and stared at me while the blood first started to enter my body. I asked her what she was doing and she said, "I'm looking for any kind of reaction (meaning death)." After about an hour she left my hospital room. The next 3 times, I didn't care and went along with whatever I was doing (probably coloring - I did a lot of coloring in my month long stay in ICU.
I was a blood donor for over 30 years, made some 50+ donations. Last year, I received 3 transfusions but I actually asked to physically see the blood type before each transfusion. But I'll admit I didn't know about THIS symptom.
Someones parents may have used u as a bad example.
Same, told to me more than once. Many people told my now wife to break up with me because I delivered pizza. I was in my early 20s and started college late. Now I make more than some of them 😆

The way we experience life is not linear, but logarithmic. We’ve all noticed that a year keeps feeling shorter, but it’s because there’s a mathematical formula for it. It’s called Weber’s Law. Life is truly too short. Before we ever notice, it’s over.
I'm trying to work out how the laws of physics, time and space, could be warped as we move through time and space, and that the experience changes as our cells are older. I wish I was better at science.
It's not a matter of spacetime warping but rather of perception. When you are young, your experiences are much more limited than when you are old. 1 day of your life is a significantly longer amount of time relative to how long you've been alive at age 6 than it is at age 16, and far longer than at age 36. Thus it feels far longer to you. The actual amount of time that passes is the same as ever, but your brain does not process it like that.

Load More Replies...Best way I’ve heard it is that when we are a year old, one year is 100% of our lives. At two, it’s already down to 50% of our lives. So the older we get the shorter a year is in comparison to those we’ve already lived. It is depressing.
My very elderly cousin said life is like a roll of toilet paper...it goes faster the closer you get to the end..
When I'm five a year is twenty percent of my life. Now at sixty (or so) it is much less. No wonder life speeds up as we age.
Yes, but does life speed as fast for you, as it seems to with me? Like it honestly only feels like YESTERDAY that I was diagnosed with kidney cancer at age 9, only to have it reccur in my liver at age 11, yet that was 27 & 25 YEARS AGO NOW!!! seriously what the F**K is happening to my life??? Mummies weren’t that rare until the Victorian British ate so many of them.
Not quite. In Europe, human mummies were powdered and used as a medical ingredient and pigment. Wikipedia has a decent rundown on it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mummia
For the people confused: Victorians were obsessed with death and the macabre, but europeans have been crazy about mummies for centuries before that. The thing with Victorians and Egyptian mummies is that they got a bit confused. Mummies got their names from the Arabic word for pissasphalt, mumiya, which was used as a medicine, and betumen, which looks like pissasphalt and was used in the mummies embalming process, began to be referred.tl as mumia. So they thought that mummies were the source of this feel-good medicine and that by grinding the mummies and consuming the powder in some sort of syrup or applying directly to a wound, they would be all healthy and cured of all illnesses. And different parts of the mummies cured different diseases because... Yeah, at this point, why not? They also held lavish mummy unwrapping parties and kept mummies as curiosities.
I'm just as confused, horrified and in disbelief as you are

The vast majority of the public hates this, believing that Members of Congress should not be able to trade individual stocks: 76% of all voters (70% of Dems, 78% of GOP, 80% of independents) - only 5% of people approve of it. You know who's among that 5% though? The majority of Congress which has repeatedly has said no way, with both the Dems and the GOP standing together. Want to know how to bring people together across the aisle? Make it about politicians blatantly enriching themselves - the public will hate it (together in unity) and the pols will love it (together in unity). Ain't America great?
Congress also gets a starting salary of almost $175,000 a year, but only in session 6 months a year; that's like $600 dollars an hour. An serve 12 years at a time. Who decides if they serve longer; other congresspeople. This allows them a tremendous amount of power, and influence. An then theirs the lobbyist! OMG don't even get me started on those leeches. They line the pockets of Congress with more cash then they can hold; just to get their agendas pushed through. Congress embraced the dark side.

There was a time when babies were operated on without anesthetics. It was believed that their nervous system wasn't developed enough to feel pain.

If a baby has a purple blanket, and a butterfly in the bed they're sleeping in...it means they had a dead/lost twin. My gf happened with that.
Circumcisions are still done without anesthesia. I once heard this is why adult men have a lower pain tolerance.

That happened to me! I wasn’t shady, but I was the shy one. Loves to try to make people smile even then. Now I’m more outgoing and generally act happier. My favourite nurse has even mentioned how I’m different. Glad he changed for the better! Makes it better on you and the rest of the staff.

I used to volunteer at a local charity for adults with learning difficulties. One of the new guys that joined was around 30 and on the more severe end of the scale compared to most that attended (non verbal, violent outbursts etc.) I assumed like most there, that he was born that way, until his brother gushed to me about his doctorates, how smart and academic he was, and how he had suffered brain damage in a car accident previous year.

Well recently I found out cobras can growl
I've seen an eastern brown "bark". He was humongous, scariest thing I've ever seen.
I just recently learned that snakes (don't know if it's all of them) can move forward without side-to-side undulation. I think they said they use their scales and they do it when they need to move silently, as when hunting. The whole body just silently moves forward in a straight line and it's really freaky to see.
I'd rather they growl than strike silently without warning. Rattlesnakes seem menacing, but at least they're giving you a chance to flee.
Some rattlesnakes appear to be evolving to lose their rattles. Giving a snake like that advanced sneaky abilities seems like unfairly gilding the lily. (https://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=216924322)

Even if you dont have a facebook account, Facebook have a "shadow profile" on you, that collects data from all over the internet (Piecing together age, name, location, interests and the like), to get to know who you are, so if/when you create a new account, they already know everything about you.

Also…squirrels are not herbivores! They have, in fact, been known to attack and devour those adorable little chipmunks when particularly hungry.
Let's be honest, being a vegetarian isn't a thing in the animal world. Herbivores are set up to digest and metabolise plant material, but it doesn't harm them in any way to take in animals. Nor do they particularly care if they do accidentally munch up a tiny mammal or amphibian along with their leaves.
oh I knew about that. Chickens, hamsters, pigs, are also omnivores. Chickens actually do a great job for mice removal. :D
I've seen cows and deer eating meat, starting to think there are no real herbivores.
I once saw a squirrel eating the wing of a dead pigeon like it was a hot wing.
One out of every 200 people on Earth are related to Genghis Khan.
Other than the crimes, which are horrible...I really liked his style of management...no nepotism, shared wealth etc. I mean...the guy had some of the quickest messengers on horseback too.
I mean he was brutal but thats how people were at the time. Besides the violence he seemed a very good leader, allowing many cultures and religions to mix. I wonder how he would have been if he was born nowadays

Let's see if this works.
And if you and your parents are European, then you are a descendent of Charlemagne, AKA Charles the Great, AKA King of the Franks, AKA King of the Lombards, AKA Holy Roman Emperor. It's a numbers game, you have 2 parents, 4 grand parents, 8 Great grandparents, and so on. There is a convergence point that will result in one of his 12 children, and therefore him.
It's called rape. He was well known for taking the spouses and daughters of his defeated enemies "to wife." That is The Secret Mongol Histories' appalling euphemism for rape.
Only 20% of the males born in the Soviet Union in 1923 survived World War 2
If your opponent didn’t kill you, the political officer behind you would.
No, most of the time they wouldn't. According to the "Not One Step Back" order, commanders who ordered unauthorized retreats would be tried and executed in prison, and fleeing soldiers would be arrested and sent to penal batallions, to clear mines or suicide missions, but they were rarely killed on the spot. It was bad for morale and Soviet authorities knew that.

I am not a fan if Russia but the continued downplaying of Russia's role in the outcome of WWII in the US is a travesty. The biggest battles of WWII in Europe, by far, were fought between the Russians and Germans. Germany had already lost the war by the time D-Day occurred. Thankfully D-Day did more to save Western Europe from the communists than it did from the Nazis. However I digress, Russia (the USSR) deserves more credit for WWII than the US gives them. The Pacific theater is an entirely different animal on the other hand.

Unless you have a child you are the last of a lineage that goes back to a single celled organism floating in a soup.
I don't get people who obsess over this sort of thing. Who cares if "your bloodline ends with you"? You don't have a duty to carry on your family's name, nor to make sure that your specific genetic material gets passed on to the next generation. There's plenty of people who will continue the species without you. And don't get me started about the idiocy of "male line descendants". Genetics don't work like that, only social structures do!
I wont ever have children (specially after my hysterectomy!) and I dont feel bad at all for not reproducing. But I still find it weird to think that I am the first one in my direct ancestors to not reproduce. First in millions of years. Its crazy. 700my if you consider only animals and not bacteria

You don't have to made a child to have an influence on life and the world! Teachers do this all the time. Do good yourself and/or teach empathy and pass along knowledge. Einstein influenced a generation by writing and teaching.
But this fact doesn't talk about impact, it simply states a fact about genetics.

I’ll just stop here?!’” I mean, can you imagine what an ancestor who fought off starvation, disease and lions or saber-toothed tigers to feed their family would think of a fat, TV-watching, junk food-eating descendent just…not wanting kids?
Yeah I’ve thought about that too, and also as biological organisms we solely exist to reproduce only our intelligence makes us think that we shouldn’t. Existence is weird.

This is the age of stars. There will come a time when no new stars form and all stars will die. There will be no light. None. Just darkness and cold. Comforting somehow.
Chances are, with all the black holes/antimatter we are now observing in the universe, that we will all get sucked up into the void at some point, and then maybe something else will be created when the black holes are all full, and suddenly, new universes will be born.
There is very, very little antimatter in the universe, and that’s been the case since immediately after the Big Bang. The most favored scenario now is the continued accelerating expansion of space, so much so that any stars or galaxies outside of our immediate local group will end up beyond the expansion horizon and be lost to us forever. Eventually star formation will cease, black holes will evaporate, and even protons themselves may decay, leaving everything in darkness and the smallest fraction of a degree above absolute zero. This will take, wait for it, a billion, billion, billion, billion, billion, billion, billion, billion, billion, billion, billion, billion years.

Might not be that disturbing but blind people don’t see black, they just don’t SEE. If they were born blind, they don’t know what black is. So, they just do not see anything at all
Kinda on the same wavelength, I've always wondered if deaf people have a voice in their head because they obviously can think but won't know how to sound out any words. So is it just constant silence?
I'm deaf. Spoken English is my first language but primarily use ASL. I certainly do hear voices in my head. Sometimes I see it as words. Sometimes as signs. Other times as images.

Load More Replies...I don't know that that is true for all blind people. I have worked with a variety of disabled people. One was a young man who was born blind and he said there was definitely a difference for him when he was completely in the dark, versus turning his face towards the sun. Also, blind is still the legal term used even for people who still have some vision. Depending on your type of blindness, you may still have light receptors within your eye sockets, or rudimentary eye formation that can distinguish certain shadows.
I could be wrong, but it used to be only 7% of people were called (as it was known when I worked with blind people) 'black blind' aka couldn't see anything. Blind people can often see shades but not in sufficient amounts to be considered partially sighted.
Load More Replies...It makes sense. You cannot see out the back of your head. It's not that you see blackness from the back of your head, you just...don't see.
I don't think this is a concept we can understand! And also not true for all blind! Depends from the severity cause some can see shadows i guess this is for 100% blind from both eyes
A lot of blind people see way more than you think. There are many different grades of blind. Someone can be perfectly able to go around town on a bycicle and still be legally blind

For my fellow habitual neck crackers; studies show there is a 1 in 20,000 to 1 in 250,000 chance that popping your neck can cause a small tear (dissection) in the inner lining of an artery, which can lead to blood clots forming that can create a blockage in an artery downstream, causing an Ischaemic Stroke (a condition where the blood supply to part of the brain is cut off.)
Also, be careful with chiropractors. Some are excellent, and some are definitely not. This is a frequent injury that occurs when some bone-crackers do an adjustment to your neck.
Chiropractors are snake oil salesmen. It's not science, it's 100% bogus and you should never let any of them touch you.

I learned that the amount of soldiers stationed in Alaska that are depressed/suicidal is off the charts. Kids get stationed up there that aren’t outdoor people are absolutely miserable. They don’t have the tools to cope yet.
It's not only troops, there was documentary about lives of young people in Alaska, and it was miserable. Always same people, nowhere else to go or hide, drug and alcohol abuse sky-high... I am pretty outdoor person I think but unless you're willing to risk your life camping for weeks in wilderness there's really very little you could do.
Depression, drug abuse, anti-social behaviour, are all very common in places where there isn't much for young people to do. that's why it's an epidemic in rural America. Add to that the seasonal changes in the amount of sunlight and you have a recipe for disaster for a lot of people.
All military/police/firemen/emts and many others should have a minimum of yearly therapy evaluations and more mental help resources
I totally agree with that, but don`t get why people that volunteer to become a soldier, are not outdoor people
Load More Replies...It has nothing to do with people killing themselves because they dont like the outdoors. That statement is laughable. However the issue is not. It is an issue for arctic countries. So the leding theory is that the light changes from 22-24 hour sunlight to 0-5 hours of sunlight between summer and winter causes seasonal depressions. If you are lucky to have an office job, but unlucky enough not to have a window, you may not see daylight for 3 months out of the year.
Wonder if the dark months contribute to this, and only improve with the midnight sun months. Sunlight deprivation is real.
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) affects a great many people and symptoms include depression. It's more common in countries where seasonal changes include fewer daylight hours. Treatment options include full-spectrum light therapy and Vitamin D.
Some cancers go years without bieng detected. That means u can have cancer right now but not even know
I think it might also be possible to develop a cancer and have your body kill it off before it can manifest itself enough to be detected. It kind of feels like cancer is a natural biological side-effect (you have to figure that mis-translated cells happen quite a bit with so much that has to be copied), and that the body has to have a method of dealing with that which can itself fail.
Tumor necrosis factor is just one of the many mechanisms the body identifies and destroys damaged cells, including cancer cells.

By 2030 there will not be enough precious metals left to mine to build touch screen technology and we have no sythentic substitutes.
There is a lot of metals left just in the state of nevada. Less then 5% has been mined. Don't think this is right. We are not going to run out in 8 years. This is only counting what has already been produced not what is still out there. I deal with mining reports all the time. Just one large mine here says it will take them another 20+ years to get it all.
