She is not to blame, but I really, really hope that her story makes other young women realize that Dubai is NOT a safe place for young female tourists, especially those who are there on their own. It's something that we've been hearing about for years, but young women still go to Dubai/UAE and countries like Qatar for "modelling opportunities" and as tourists :(

To add to her innocence, 20 years is a very naive age. Yes, she has seen war in her home country but she is not aware of the broader evils in the world and it would be so easy to lure her with false charm and enticements because not only is she in a desperate war torn situation, so is everyone she loves that she would be seeking to care for and save with a financial opportunity to get them safe. These men are monsters and parasites in every possible way.

I didn't see it as blaming her....I saw their comments akin to saying "It's dangerous to walk in a dark alley alone in a city at night." People are just alerting others to potential dangers not uncommon to certain scams or lifestyles. How many times have we heard of someone going missing after being chosen for "modeling?" I think people are merely cautioning to be more diligent in and less trusting

It's not about criticizing her. It's about trying to prevent others from ending up in the same situation. If someone takes a drink from a stranger and ends up drugged and assaulted....it's not helpful to scream about the way the world "should be" it does nothing to change the way the world actually is. You want to help people? You want to save others from this kind of pain? That means being objective and honest about what led to the outcome. It's not about blaming the victim. She's already been victimized, and yes it's horrible. So why aren't you a little more interested in making sure it doesn't happen to someone else?

She is the victim, but honestly, people should be more aware of the risks when they go to certain places. There are countries which are dangerous for women, especially young and beautiful. Everybody knows how women are treated in Dubai, Saudi Arabia, etc. Theere are hundreds of cases. Why risk going there? I do hope this horror make young ladies realise how dangerous these places are.

In Dubai that can get you decades in jail. She needs to be back in Europe before she opens her mouth and have a lawyer to advise her until she touched down and is safe.

But it IS safe as long as you do typical tourist stuff. I am female and spent a week there alone and felt safe. But of course you should never go with strangers, no matter where in the world. I live in a reasonably safe country in Europe but I have no doubt horrible things can happen to young women going to „parties“ where they don’t know anybody.

I completely agree. So many people here don't understand the difference between facts and blame. If people were saying "x y and z are all known signs that a party is actually a front for a crime" is fine "she shouldn't have gone/she should have known better" is victim blaming. I'm so upset by so many of these comments.

You want to "raise awareness"? First, there's plenty of awareness over the treatment of not only women, but people in general in Dubai along with most of the predominantly muslim countries. It's not a secret...but yes, regardless awareness should continue to be raised. What does that look like in practice? It means objectively looking at the situation, that led to the outcome, DOESN'T IT? Lets say some young girl goes to a bar and accepts a drink delivered by a stranger...not the waiter, not the bartender, some random guy....and she ends up drugged and assaulted. Is anyone helped by shouting that "this shouldn't happen" or do you "raise awareness" by pointing out "this girl accepted a drink from a stranger....that's why you shouldn't do that"? Screaming about how the world "should be" doesn't change the way the world actually is, and accepting the reality of how the world is, directly aides people in avoiding terrible outcomes. Not about shame. About helping prevent the next tragedy
