Bear, Lion And Tiger Brothers Haven’t Left Each Other’s Side For 15 Years

We’ve seen a lot of unlikely animal friendships here at Bored Panda. Dogs and elephants. Cats and foxes. Even giraffes and ostriches. However, nothing comes close to seeing these three unlikely friends – an American black bear, an African lion, and a Bengal tiger – living together in harmony. This unusual friendship really takes some beating.

Baloo the bear, Leo the lion and Shere Khan the tiger have spent the last 15 years peacefully coexisting at Noah’s Ark Animal Shelter in Georgia. Known as the BLT, these adorable animals were rescued in 2001 from the basement of a house in Atlanta during a police drug raid. They were rescued from a severe animal abuse case – kept in the basement in terrible conditions, and Baloo had to have surgery to remove an ingrowing harness that hadn’t been adjusted as he’d grown. That was the only time the trio of best friends has ever been separated, however, and they’ve spent every happy day together since.

They were too injured to be rehabilitated and returned to the wild

But by the looks of things they’re more than happy to live together at the sanctuary!

Baloo is an American Black Bear, Leo is an African Lion and Shere Khan is a Bengal Tiger

Coming from three different continents, such animals would never meet each other in the wild

But despite their various differences, the animals get along like brothers and are completely inseperable

They started life in a terrible way but they now live together in happy retirement

Um, don't male African lions have manes? Isn't that a female lion?

Their love for each other is obvious - about half the pictures involve licking! Bless the people at the sanctuary for keeping them together!

If animals can overcome their primal instincts to be inseparable family, why not humans?

And here's a lesson for us humans to learn: love can be much more interesting than hate.

Wow, this proves even more that family, doesn’t just mean blood relations. They understood each other and shared the same sorrows and joys. Animals are so much more than humans think or give them credit for. Very heartwarming.

What do I think? I think you should either stick to current stories or make it clear when you're dragging out an old one like this. I don't know how old this is, but the lion died 2 or 3 years ago, so there are (were) only two of the trio left.

This is so nice to read- a good story about animals. I wish they were all good. No animal ever deserves to suffer and especially at the hands of a human.

Oh no!!! I checked out the link- Leo just passed away in August :,( Baloo and Shere Khan are apparently doing well! This is such a beautiful story, and it's tragic that one letter is missing from the BLT- but it's great that Leo had such close friends while he lived.

The bear keeps them both warm, easy for a cat to appreciate that.

They get along like brothers? Huh, if they were like my family they would be fighting all day. They get along more like in a "bromantic" way.

Ah? They are all at the top of the food chain. So, no, they would not try and kill each other. They would avoid each other as a mutual respect unless there was cubs involved.

The lion is a female. Males grow manes even if they are neutered.

The lion is obviously female, so Leo might not be the perfect name unless it's a liger....are the bear and the tiger male?

No, Leo is male (or an it, if someone prefers that). He's been neutered when he was a cub and never had the testosterone needed to grow a mane. He's got the big square head of a male still.
