Kodak Unveils A New Smartphone Designed Specifically For Photographers

Kodak and Bullitt Group just unveiled the new KODAK EKTRA smartphone designed specifically for photographers. It features a 21-megapixel fast focus camera sensor with f2.0 aperture, and an industry leading 13-megapixel front-facing camera with Phase Detection Auto Focus PDAF and f2.2 aperture.

The custom built camera app is controlled by an intuitive haptic touch, SLR-style Scene Selection Dial, where adjustments are made in real time via a range of settings including HDR, Landscape, Portrait, Macro, Sport, Night-time, Panorama and Bokeh, alongside a Smart Auto mode which auto-selects the best conditions for your photographs. In Manual mode, more advanced users can adjust exposure, ISO, focus, white balance and shutter speed, with the results being visible on the screen as changes are made.

The KODAK EKTRA Smartphone has a dedicated dual press shutter button in the horizontal style of traditional cameras. The device also features a Super 8 app, providing professional effects reminiscent of Kodak’s iconic Super 8 film stocks. A lightning-fast HELIO X20 Decacore processor powers the ANDROID Marshmallow smartphone.

This beauty will be priced at £449 and available across Europe later this year.

I feel like this would only really be for a very specific audience, as it's too expensive for someone who doesn't take many photographs, but if you're a legitimate, professional photographer you wouldn't WANT your camera to also be a phone and would instead just have at least one high quality camera.

Nice, but for that price I can buy a great camera and have no calls/texts/social media bothering me while I take photos :) Also I'm not a celebrity so I REALLY don't need a 13px cam (or any camera tbh) to take selfies...

It would be a better all in one device... needs a projector and flesh light & it could be perfect

because everyone is getting a smartphone now and doing "photography" with it...Apple make huge publicity for the camera on the iphones. This will never been use by professional photographer but by casual photographer who just want to take pictures with little place

call me oldfashioned but I prefer to take photos with a camera, call people with a phone and listen to music on a MP3 player. Ofc a smartphone can all of the above and while it can be good it won't excel anywhere imo

In other words, it's a 2015 Moto X Pure Edition, if it's real at all. The only game changer would be the optics, and they don't mention what (if any) lens options are, or if this has optical zoom of any kind.

They are focusing on the camera mainly so don't expect too much on the phone. I like the case, that's about it.

Yep. My comment basically comparing it to an overpriced compact camera was deleted. Not offensive - no profanity, no ranting, ect. Not cool, Bored Panda staff. Not cool.

This seen like it would be perfect for capturing a moment, rather than taking professional photos. But I imagine it will do that job better than most smartphones currently (aside maybe the iPhone 7+). But what ever it is used for it looks really cool. P.S extra marks for that leather case

I like the design, but that lens looks REALLY tiny. Not sure how much difference 21 megapixels makes when your image sensor is the size of a pin head.

The design, the shape, the machined look, the texture, the thinness, the exquisite red-interior case...ZOMG I can't believe Kodak came up with such a sleek beauty. Hooray for Kodak; am thrilled with their new-found creativity!

Hope it can shoot RAW. I'm looking to replace the Lumia 1020 which is outdated on every possible scale and very slow. I do like the convenience of having a decent camera-phone, instead of having to lug a DSLR around.

I think it was a necessary step. Phones have been encroaching on cameras for a while, and they are coming closer to offering professional results each day, so if Kodak wanted to survive it had to enter the phone market.
