Alicia Levy never pictured herself as a photographer, ever. For over 2 decades in New York City Alicia’s dream was comedy. From auditions for the Daily Show to voice overs for Taco Bell, she wasn’t sure of the path she was taking…until her son was born. Alicia did a complete check in about where her life was going, as we all have to do once in awhile, asking herself, “What will be the story my son will tell about me and who I am as a person and a Mom?” Acting is a waiting game: one where you are never in charge of your career. It all depends on others, and emotions are always a roller coaster. It was then that her perspective and focus changed completely, and JoopaShoots Photography was born. Alicia found a need for a different approach to photography: one where pictures are taken from the heart and come from a true place of joy.
We’ve all been there: in front of the camera while someone yells at us, “Say Cheese!” “Smile at the Camera!” or “Look Here!” At JoopaShoots Photography, Photographer Alicia Levy is on a campaign to get rid of those “cheesy” directions and instead capture genuine moments that reflect who her subjects truly are.
“Families are getting tired of the posed perfect family photos and are gravitating toward what is real. I have had so many parents tell me that they love my portraits because they reflect the feeling of their family, rather than something staged that gives no sense of who they are.”
Alicia’s background in sketch comedy enables her to connect with her subjects, get them laughing and relaxed, and immediately relieving them of the need to do a great job or get a great photo.
With kids, Alicia goes with the flow to really observe who they are and what they love. “I use the ‘yes and’ concept from my improv background. You go with the energy of the child and let them lead creating fun games that result in wonderful images.”
Alicia loves to go to people’s homes for family sessions. This is where she is even more able to capture a day in the life. Kids love showing their room and treasures and she is able to photograph that spirit. She also loves to incorporate family heirlooms in the portraits to give it even more meaning.
