Denmark has been in the news a lot lately. This small Scandinavian country of six million people has found itself in a tricky situation with bigger nations testing its limits.
Vikings, LEGO, and Ozempic aside, many of you may not have known much about it before.
But the headlines don’t show the full story.
So we collected a list of images showing the (extra)ordinary aspects of Denmark's everyday life that make this country so unique and interesting. Discover it yourself!

This should be a thing in the US. Too many people clearly don't know our own constitution, head Cheeto included.
I think it would be better to teach it in schools.

Constitutions are typically written in plain prose and in easy to understand points, and the Danish one is no exception. Check for yourself https://www.thedanishparliament.dk/-/media/sites/ft/pdf/publikationer/the-constitutional-act-of-denmark.pdf

As they should. On behalf of my country and the idiots in charge of it... I'm so, so sorry.
Please don't feel like you have to be sorry! Most of us Danes are fully aware of that a lot of Americans didn't sign up for the s******w.

Nope, go ahead and boycott the hell out of the US. There's enough Maggots in blue states that need to get in touch with reality that I don't want them to miss out. Plus, why should the blue states carry the nation's economy and give the Orange Pus-pocket Twatwaffle a false sense that things are just hunky-dory. Load More Replies...Though small in territory, Denmark has played a notable role in European history.
In prehistoric times, Danes and other Scandinavians remodelled the continent when the Vikings undertook marauding, trading, and colonizing expeditions.
During the Middle Ages, the Danish crown dominated northwestern Europe through the Kalmar Union, a political federation uniting Denmark, Norway, and Sweden under one monarch.
In later centuries, shaped by geographic conditions favoring maritime industries, Denmark established trading alliances throughout northern and western Europe and beyond, particularly with Great Britain and the United States.
Denmark Is Repurposing Discarded Wind Turbine Blades As Bike Shelters
It's a single installation, part of an international design program called "Re Wind Network". It has been installed in 2023 in the Port of Aalborg. Other projects involved turing the blades into walkways, electrical poles, bridges etc as a way to recover older installations that are being upgraded to modern standards.
I suppose this blurb is a bit misleading but as you say we ARE exploring how to use this environmental disaster to some type of advantage. We could definitely use some in the smaller towns and in the countryside.
Load More Replies...Utterly ingenious. Make re-purposed use of something that is not recyclable and is huge to boot instead of smashing up and burying in a landfill, and promote bicycle use at the same time by providing weather-protected bicycle parking. Profoundly ingenious.
There are processes to recycle fiberglass, but are not viable at the current scale of waste production (that is TINY in the grand scale of things). They do NOT end up in landfills (at least in the EU, we are not as landfill-happy as the US). Currently, they get broken up and sent to a high temp incinerator (such as the Amager Bakke in another entry), that recovers energy and breaks down the material to CO2, water vapor and ash. It's commendable they are working to address this potential stream of waste, but quite frankly it's a minor problem.

Load More Replies...Denmark has done incredibly well in the annual World Happiness Report. The country has never fallen out of the Top 3 since its initial release in 2012 and has placed first numerous times.
The most obvious reason for the Danes' strong sense of life satisfaction and general positive mood is their work-life balance, which is heavily weighted towards the 'life' part.
For instance, the average Dane worked 1,379 hours in 2024, or about 26.5 hours per week, which is well below the OECD average of 1,736 (33.5 per week), and especially below that of the United States (1,796 hours total, or 34.5 per week) and Mexico (2,193, or 42.17).
Over the course of a year, the gap widens because the Danes benefit from such generous paid time off, parental leave, and public holidays.
Miniature Traffic Playground In Copenhagen Where Kids Learn To Bike In Traffic
It wasn't as fancy back in the 70', but it is still where I was taught to ride my bike in traffic , I have fond memories of this place.
Me too! I think I went there with school in the early 90s. 😁
Load More Replies...We got that painted on our school yard when we learned how to ride our bicycles in traffic (2nd year of primary, so we were 7 years old). It was an annual thing. Yes, imagine - 7 year old kids riding their bike 3 miles to the library or just for fun! No parent in sight! And we didn't go feral!
Wow, my life just made a complete circle on me... this post reminded me of the last time my kids and I spent with my mom before she died. We went to Legoland in NY. The kids had a blast doing a little course exactly like this in mini cars. Never occurred to me it was Danish! Fast forward 4 months, I'm notifying my mother's friends about her death, and I find a Christmas card she had written, but never sent, to her dear friend Helle, a wonderful Danish woman who was like a second mother to me to me growing up. She taught me never to take anyone's sh*t, and actually got me drunk for the first time ever one Thanksgiving (much to mom's dismay). I tried calling, no dice, so looked her up on FB. I was shattered when I found out she had passed only a few months after my mother (in a far off state). Helle always promised me, growing up in the 80's, that someday she'd take me to Denmark to spend the summer with her extended family and go to the og Legoland. Miss them both so much <3
In the 1950's part of our school playground was set out as a 'road' and any of the 10 year olds who wanted, did the 'cycling proficieny' - a national cycling scheme in the UK. Not as fancy as that though.

80m Tall Rock Climbing Wall In Denmark
The building is a waste to energy plant named Amager Bakke. On the top right you can see the chimney. It's a state-of-the-art facility, producing minimal quantities of gas (mostly water vapor) and supplying power and energy to 150,000 homes. It can remove 80 tons of non-recyclable waste per hour, with the leftover ash being recovered for construction use after treatment with the wastewater produced by the very same process. It won the Building of the Year prize in 2021

Seals are cute, but they've also got very sharp teeth. Round here, we have plenty of seals on sandbanks well away from shore. The rule is to stay well away from them when they're resting - they're not happy about people getting close up. Typically, they'll flee into the water (at a time when they'd rather be dozing) and that doesn't help them survive. It's only idiots with small boats who cause any problem.

These high levels of social trust also make Danes willing to pay some of the world's highest taxes to finance an extensive set of welfare programs.
Their health system is tax-funded and free for the patient. Danish schools and universities are also funded by taxes and free for students. The idea is that everyone must contribute to the community, and in return, the community will help care for all.
Copenhagen (Denmark) Has These Rails For Cyclists To Lean On At Red Lights
Reminds me of my first outing with Look pedals on my bike, probably 30 years ago. Pedals that clip into your shoes are superb, however they require setting up correctly and the twist to get your foot out of them requires a little practice. I had them set up poorly (I learnt afterwards) and I had not really got the technique quite right. Rolled up next to a bus full of commuters at a traffic light, frantically tried to remove my foot from the pedals, failed, ungracefully fell sideways onto a slightly muddy verge. At least 15 or so people got a good laugh at me fighting with my bike that refused to become detached from my feet whilst I lay on my side. Pre-camera phones thank the lord 😂
This Grave In The Assistens Cemetery In Copenhagen, Denmark, Says “Andreas Morgenrødt - Time Traveller - 1996-2064”
Guerrilla art project by Danish poet Morten Søndergaard, 2015. "Andreas Morgenrødt," is the anagram of his name. Its location in an historical burial site (mostly visited by people looking for Christian Andersen and Niels Bohr) caused some raised eyebrows, but Technically, fake gravestones aren’t allowed in the cemetery, but ultimately the city decided to keep it as a public artwork.
US here we have a plaque on a home in a town near where I live (Troy, NY). Jacob Von Hogflume 1864-1909, The Inventor Of Time Travel Lived Here in 2248 This page delves into some of the time travelers. >>> https://www.natalijaugrina.com/post/john-e-lewis-time-travel-leuven
Your plaque is one of many secondary ones in the project. The original Hogflume plaque has been placed in Golden Square, Soho (London) in 2012 by two local artists and advertising professionals, Dave Askwith and Alex Normanton. The original said "lived here in 2189", and was designed to mimic the "English Heritage" plaques. Many others with different dates have been placed around England and in a few places abroad to keep the joke running.

Party pooper here... LOTS of reviews and comments online complain about dirty, broken or not functional items, at fairly high prices. Their business model and financial statements are pure "startup hell". High operating cost, burning through venture capital, 7 years without a single profitable quarter (they burned through at least $30M last year alone). High initial cost, high liability, significant revenue share quotas (e.g. with landlords, local maintainers etc), quickly depreciating assets. It looks like a company who is in their market growth phase, but that will quickly have to pivot into the enshittification phase to start covering their financial obligations, or disappear.
BTW, it's not Danish. It's an Israeli company with the US as a primary market, and recently expanding in a few selected cities in the UK and EU.

There are items that you may only use once a lifetime or once a year, saves money and storage. Angle grinders, hedge trimmers, large set of champagne glasses or mugs, random DIY stuff, carpet cleaner, printer, projector, bits of safety gear goggles or heavyweight gloves, and a really random range of household / kitchen stuff. Most you pay is £5 for the most expensive kit but the majority is £3 or less. They also have a team of retired folk who will help repair things for you, I had an old Gaggia machine that despite my skills I could not get to work, one of the chaps there, Phil, took it away, replaced some of the electrickery bits inside and charged me £30. We now have a brew together every few weeks. I love our community library and the repair team!

Tivoli Gardens
Tivoli is always evolving without abandoning its original charm or traditions. Georg Carstensen said in 1844: "Tivoli will never, so to speak, be finished", a sentiment echoed just over a century later when Walt Disney said of his own Tivoli-inspired theme park, "Disneyland will never be completed. It will continue to grow as long as there is imagination left in the world."

Brøndby Garden City, Located Just Outside Copenhagen, Denmark
While visiting the beautiful capital city of Copenhagen in Denmark, I encountered what seems like an alien civilization. To my surprise, these are just small piece of what called, "Colony Gardens", literally a garden space that Danish citizens can rent to grow produces & vegetables. Space is extremely limited if you're living the main city so this is the perfect way to have your own gardens & get back to nature! Owners are allowed to live there between April-October to take care of their gardens (can't grow anything in the winter).
What a unique way of contributing to a better planet. Way to go Danes.
The houses are owned, and are quite small, about 50 sqm, and most of the space is for tools or garden leisure space. The owner pays a rent for the garden, at about €1000 per year. Owners cannot live in the place for more than six months per year, April 1 to October 1 plus the weekends, and must already be resident close by to be able to buy. They are designed as country houses or places of retreat, not as primary living quarters.
Urbanistically, they require lots of maintenance in the common spaces, represent a pretty inefficient use of land and the model is extremely car-dependent. These are the main reasons why this model has not been replicated often, especially in a place where space comes as a premium.

3D Zebra Crossings Are Tested In Denmark. The Goal Is To Make Them Easier To Spot, And Hopefully Safer For Pedestrians To Cross
The test on three locations gave mostly negative results and they were removed at the end of the agreed 1-year trial period in 2024. Similar attempts in Iceland (the original one, this is a copy), Belgium and Myanmar failed as well, showing no improvement in safety after a short initial novelty window, but a steep increase in maintenance cost. Studies documented an increase in the *sense* of safety for both drivers and pedestrians, that while apparently a good thing can lead to the opposite result, giving overconfidence and causing more accidents.

It makes such a huge difference to those who are blind or have sight problems. I'm completely at a loss why issuing bank notes in a single colour, and a single size doesn't violate disability legislation. Where I live, the notes are different colours, and different sizes, and in addition to that, there's tactile markings in the corner. It's similar to Braille.
I know that this would make it easier to tell the different values apart, but I think I would find it immensely irritating to have all different sizes of bills in my wallet.
It's what most of the world has been doing since banknotes were invented. It's weird for most people first handling US cash to find that they're all the same size and mostly the same colour too. Just seems stupid to me.

Elephant In Copenhagen
That is the Carlsberg elephants, there are one on each side of the gate. Carlsberg is a brewery, but as far as I know they are no longer brewing in København. I used to live nearby and back in the day you could smell the yeast in the air.
Carlsberg had to change their logo in the 1930s because of their boisterous southern neighbours.

In Denmark They Put Sliced Chocolate On Bread
And it is the best way to eat chocolate on bread, it tops Nutella and hagelschlag by a million. Good quality pålægschokolade is just dark chocolate and it is amazing on a piece of warm, buttered bread.
Yes. And imo REMA has the best ones because they make the slices just a tiny tad thicker.

In Denmark You Can Buy Hollowed Out Hot Dog Buns
We call them french hotdogs, and you put dressing and the sausage inside the bread. They have absolutely no connection to France, but they are easy to eat on the go, except for the dressing overflowing and dribbling down your front, or maybe that is just a me problem:)
Is it only on Funen we call it "en franner" insread of "en fransk hotdog"?

Balconies In Copenhagen
There must be another shape that is more useful than that acute angle at the outermost portion of balcony.
Ehh. You get all the wind and the rain and no shelter or privacy. Not impressed.
That's what a balcony is. If you want shelter, you go inside.

The Danes pay high taxes, this is why they get so much good stuff. They are happy with this. Other countries take note.
I have come to realise that people who constantly campaign for lower taxes, do not seem to know what taxes actually do.

We could do that for most places, couldn't we? I mean, if I mentioned all of the individually cool or progressive things in the US, and treated them like they were common to the US, would people end up saying (as they do based on this list), "Wow! The US is such an amazing place! I wish the rest of the world were like that!"
I really liked Denmark and Sweden. Lovely people and lots to do. Although I did find it annoying that you can't buy wine in supermarkets. I think in Sweden you could only get it in government owned shops.
I happen to live in three countries, of which one is Denmark. Several of these can be found in many western europe countries, with each their own touch to it. A lot of typical danish (and general scandinavian) amenities are not named, maybe in the cut off part, which are financed by the very high taxes.
