Losing weight is often seen as a simple process that happens when people exercise more and eat less. The problem is that it can be physically and psychologically difficult for folks to magically slim down, which is why, when they do, it’s important to celebrate it.

One content creator revealed that he lost over 130 pounds in a year and used his platform to share his story, hoping it would inspire others to do the same. Even though it’s quite an incredible feat, the man’s reason for slimming down in the first place was a tough pill to swallow.

Sometimes folks don’t feel motivated to work on their health until life throws them a curveball that serves as a reality check

The YouTuber, Mr. Joshua, who is a 5-foot-9-inch man from Baltimore, Maryland, used to weigh 311 pounds

We reached out to Josh Carr, the man in question, who told Bored Panda that it was late in 2024 that his father was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. He spent the entirety of 2025 helping him with his chemotherapy and then as his primary caretaker while he was on home hospice before he passed in July 2025.

Josh told us that “watching him fade so fast was a massive wake-up call regarding my own health, longevity, and how precious life is. Having lost both of my brothers when I was a teenager, I knew my pattern was to cope with grief through [drinking] and food, and judging by the state I was already in, I knew that path would lead to an early grave.”

That’s why Mr. Joshua decided to take all of those emotions and to channel them into completely transforming himself, inside and out. He then spent all of August grieving while obsessively researching nutrition, exercise, and health studies. By September 6, 2025, he mentioned that he was ready to start his journey, and this time, he knew there was nothing that was going to stop him.

Joshua started off by trying to cut down his calories drastically and go on extremely long walks

When the content creator began eating just 1200-1300 calories per day, he lost a lot of weight but also realized it was costing him strength and muscle mass. That’s why he then increased his intake to 1700 calories and, during a maintenance break, added around 700 more. In addition, Joshua began training at the gym, lifting weights and focusing on compound exercises like squats, deadlifts, and bench presses.

Josh Carr also told us that he had been trying to lose weight off and on for the better part of the last 20 years. He would usually end up losing 30-50 pounds, then life happens; he would give up and end up gaining back even more weight than he started with.

“What made this time different is I didn’t go into this with a ‘fad diet’ or some kind of secret way to lose weight. I simply followed the science, calories in and calories out, hit macro goals, eat whole satiating foods, keep protein high, push myself in the gym at least 3x a week, and one of the most overlooked parts of weight loss–walking,” he shared. It’s clear that his incredible focus earned him the results that we see today, as he burned an estimated 500,000 calories in just eight months.

Joshua truly believes that 10 months of focus and dedication can truly change a person

Ever since he began his journey, he said he has had much more energy and stopped feeling so tired and out of breath. He could also do pull-ups and jog for miles without stopping, both of which seemed like impossible feats just a year ago.

Josh told us that he gets “comments all the time from people saying, ‘I wish I had your discipline,’ but just under a year ago I didn’t even have my discipline. Discipline isn’t something you’re born with; it’s a skill you develop through hard work. Motivation will get you started, but it’s temporary. Use it to develop the discipline and the routine that will carry you once it’s gone. It won’t be easy, but in the end it’s more than worth it; my only regret is that I didn’t figure it out sooner.”

Of course, there are still days when the YouTuber feels some impostor syndrome about his body, but he feels proud when he thinks about how his progress would make his dad happy. His tireless efforts clearly shine as a beacon for folks who might still be stuck on their weight-loss journey.

That’s why Josh said it’s important to “Do hard things. Yeah, in the moment it [is unpleasant], but the feeling you get when you accomplish something that you never thought possible is indescribable. Like when I walked 50,000 steps in a day at 260 pounds. It was, to this day, the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but it showed me I’m capable of more. That the only person holding me back is me.”

People often try their best to slim down and are able to continue the healthy habits for a short time, until they eventually go back to what they were doing before

It seems like folks are always stuck on their weight-loss journey and hardly ever actually slim down or keep the fat off. Research shows that around 42% of adults keep trying to work off the excess pounds, while 23% are desperately trying to maintain their overall weight.

According to Marschall S. Runge, folks might find it hard to keep the fat off because when they bulk up, their body isn’t just changing; their biology is also adapting. Human bodies might learn to accept that higher weight as a norm, and might then try to maintain that number when a person tries to shed the pounds.

This may be why only about 10% of dieters achieve their weight-loss goals, as studies have found that folks who slim down often return to their bigger size after only a short while. Other reasons may explain this experience, including that losing fat can slow a person’s metabolism, meaning even less food could contribute to weight gain.

It can be discouraging to realize that even if you try hard to slim down, you may hit hurdles like this along the way. That’s why the Mayo Clinic advises people to set reasonable goals for how much weight they want to lose overall and each week, as this can serve as a slow-and-steady guide.

Everyone loves to click on articles about shedding pounds quickly and as painlessly as possible, because folks often don’t feel comfortable putting in the work required to be fit. That’s why Angela Williams explains that people need to ditch drastic weight-loss measures and focus on a simple calorie deficit, a healthy diet, and exercise in the long run.

Healthline also notes that many people skip fiber in their diet, which can hurt weight loss and overall health. In fact, there is a type of soluble fiber known as viscous fiber that can curb a person’s appetite by holding more water in the digestive tract and making folks feel full, as well as positively interacting with their gut microbes.

Also, people need to let go of the idea that if they don’t achieve their goal quickly, they have failed. These unrealistic expectations might push them to lose weight fast and put it back on just as quickly, which can damage their health in the end.

It’s clear that Joshua’s difficult life experience was the catalyst for his incredible transformation, and that he’s in it for the long run. Hopefully, he can inspire more folks with his fitness routine and lifestyle changes. We’d love to hear if there’s anything from his experience that you found particularly powerful. People were proud of the YouTuber for his consistency and efforts, and some even asked him for advice on their weight loss journey
