50 Times Actors Nailed A Role So Flawlessly, Nobody Will Be Able To Live Up To It
They say hard work beats talent, and there’s plenty of truth to that. However, there’s no denying that some people have a natural gift for what they do.
Take the world’s greatest movie stars, for instance. It feels like they were made for the roles they play, leaving us completely spellbound every second they’re on screen.
Redditors recently weighed in on this and shared their thoughts about which actors delivered performances that can never be topped. Scroll down to see their picks and let us know if you agree!

Alan Rickman is Snape. Always.
Whatever role he was given he turned into the most memorable character of any movie. My favorite is still Metatron from Dogma, his sarcastic exasperation was comedy gold.

I saw someone talk about how a Snape movie would work with Adam Driver as younger Snape trying to survive the Death Eater cult. I think that would actually work. But you can never recast middle aged Snape
Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow.
Prof_Walrus:
The fact they're trying to replace/reboot him is a guaranteed box office flop.
anonymous:
The role was actually written for Hugh Jackman but Johnny Depp had more star power.
There's absolutely no movie without Johnny Depp. Disney still don't listen to the fans. Shows that they haven't learned a single thing at all. If I was Disney I wouldn't waste the time or money replacing or rebooting Johnny Depp's character. I wouldn't make any more of the movies because as soon as people find out he's not in them, they are going to flop. Disney of course is used to flops. It's their new norm.
Christopher Lloyd as Doc Brown.
enricopallazo22:
There's only one doc Brown and only Marty Mcfly and it should always be that way.
Eric Stoltz played Marty McFly for the first six weeks of filming! I have no idea how Zemeckis convinced the studio to allow him to re-cast with MJF and reshoot, but it was absolutely the right call. You can find footage with Stoltz as Marty online and it’s like watching an alternate timeline.

Harrison Ford. Indiana Jones and Han Solo.
Far-Government5469:
Harrison brought just the right amount of incredulity to his circumstance to sell them.
I read that they wanted Tom selleck to play Indie, just wouldn’t have been the same
He was offered the role before Harrison Ford but had other obligations and couldn't do it.
Load More Replies...All they had to do was make the movie about Lando instead of Han and Solo would have worked. No one can deal with a "young" Solo that doesn't look or sound anything like Harrison Ford. But if it had been about Lando flying the Falcon having adventures before he even met Solo it would have been a great movie. Glover was a great choice in young Lando casting
Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter, the dude out performed the books.
Mads Mikkelsen was awesome as Hannibal in the series so Anthony Hopkins isn't the only one
It's probably a hot take but I think Mads was slightly better. The show had its ups and downs but Mikkelsen was amazing throughout. Such a wierd show and couldn't help loving Hannibal. As a whole body of work (all of the Hannibal roles Hopkins did compared to all the episodes mikkelsen did) i would give it to Mads.
Load More Replies...IMHO Brian C*x was better in the seriously underrated "Manhunter" than Anthony Hopkins in the remake, the mediocre "Red Dragon". But nobody ever will be so good to be bad as Sir Anthony in the "Silence of the Lambs". Ever.
I haven’t seen Manhunter for 15-20 years and had no idea that was Brian Còx! The remake has its moments, but the original is better.
Load More Replies...Hopkins was awesome, but I think Brian Côx was equally superb in Manhunter as the original Lecter.
Gene Wilder will forever be Willy Wonka.
thegreatresistrules:
This... my little daughter loved the Johnny Depp version until she finally saw the original. Now she hates the Depp version.
A big part of it was Wilder's willingness, even eagerness, to actually mess with the other actors. In his introductory scene, none of the kids were had ever met him before, nor were they told anything about what to expect. So the horrified looks on their faces when he fell were genuine, because they honestly, truly, thought he had fallen over. All done at Wilder's specific request.
The original was best. Not only because Wilder's performance was so captivating, but the story and visuals were far better. Burton's version was strange and eerie, lacking all the comedy and soul of the book, Depp's portrayal of Wonka was awkward and forced, whole movie felt like Burton having a therapy session for his angst with his own father. That movie was when I knew Burton had lost his touch.
While I agree that Wilder is *by far* the better Wonka, the Burton version follows the book much more closely: nut-cracking squirrels instead of geese laying golden eggs, Mr Bucket still being alive & working at the toothpaste factory, Charlie *not* stealing fizzy lifting drink, seeing the rule-breakers leaving the factory at the end, even some of the songs are direct quotes. The biggest deviation was the whole Tragic Backstory about Wonka's childhood & daddy issues.
Load More Replies...There is an actual sense of menace in the Wilder version that makes the movie amazing and rewatchable. Chocolate river, check. Horrific worm tunnel of fear? Check.
My little cousins had only seen the remake. One day I babysat and brought the ORIGINAL. They wanted to know what movie I brought. I told them, only to be informed that they'd seen it and didn't like it. I told them this was a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT movie and to trust me. They LOVED it.
Oooh yes! I like Depp, but not for this role. Gene Wilder's character was more like a regular person that was eccentric & unpredictable, while Depp was like...I'm sorry, I probably won't explain this well, but he felt like he was playing a caricature of someone who was eccentric & unpredictable. It felt "real"-ish in the Wilder version vs 100% fantasy in the Depp version. That probably didn't make sense, but that's the best I can describe it.
Both the original W***y Wonka and then Wizard of Oz were shown one Christmas on TV as a child... I was left traumatised!!! Flying monkeys and having horrific things happen to you if you eat to many sweeties??? 😭😭😭 ... I'm surprised I'm a somewhat relatively 'normal' person after that!!! 😄
I don't like Gene Wilder at all, don't like any of his movies, but he is the one and only W***y Wonka.
Michael Keaton did great with Beetlejuice.
DeeVa72:
I also think he was the best Batman
I'll be honest, even though the Flash movie sucked, it was great seeing Keaton having fun as Batman again. He killed it in that movie. Setting aside how s****y Ezra Miller turned out to be as a person, and the terrible CGI babies cause WB pulled funds after Miller got worse and worse, I thought it was a decent movie
Viggo Mortensen in Lord of the Rings. That wasn't how I pictured the character reading the book 40 years ago, or any time re reading it before the films, but that is Aragorn for me now.
The Road. Man that was a heartbreaking movie but he was so good in it.
Viggo was great, I agree. Yet, Daniel Day Lewis would have been an awesome Aragorn.
Daniel Day Lewis could convincingly play a postage stamp.

Tim Curry as Frank N Furter in Rocky Horror.
DirtRockEngineer:
This is so true. He didn't cross my mind until I read this comment and now I can't forgive myself.
That would still be one plus one plust two plus one, not one plus two plus one plus one
Load More Replies...Curry owned Rocky Horror and has been great in everything he's done.
There was a 2 part episode (Our Darkest Hour, 2010) of Criminal Minds where Tim Curry played Billy Flynn, a serial killer that traveled in an old RV and would murder families. He was so good in that role, you could believe he was an actual sociopath. Episode was very well acted by the entire cast (don't miss AJ Cook's performance in part 2). Well worth the watch if you are a Tim Curry fan. Some pretty much everyone.
Ian McKellen as Gandalf.
I... can't quite picture that, to be honest.

Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool.
warchiefx:
Reynolds was practically born to play that role.
Ryan Reynolds is the ONLY person that should play Deadpool. He's the ONLY person who should continue to write the movies as well because he stays true to the character and won't change anything to please Disney and their modern methods of changing characters and sticking ideology in things where they don't belong. He's fighting really hard for the future of the character and the whole Mutant Saga right now. In my opinion he's irreplaceable.
Even that I can't stand Ryan Reynolds, I have to agree that no one else can play Deadpool like him. He IS Deadpool.
Another good actor who gets the voice down pat is Nolan North, but that's typically in the realm of the cartoons and video games. He's got a crazier delivery than Ryan Reynolds, but for live action, nobody else can capture Deadpool better than Ryan Reynolds.
Load More Replies...He's great and he was BORN to play him. But while we're talking Deadpool, IMHO the worst thing about Deadpool is his taste in music. Just the most terrible disco garbage.
Agreed...but the most recent movie Deadpool & Wolverine, felt very very forced. I cringed at the jokes more than I laughed at them.
Patric Stewart/Picard.
craigerstar:
Stewart is the biggest reason for the success of a Star Trek reboot. If not for Stewart's Picard, I believe every Star Trek vehicle made since would not have happened or been some low budget hatchet job, including the current Chris Pine movies.
I'll also throw in in Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier. Nailed it 👍
Same, the X-Men are truly sacred to me and he was PERFECT casting.
Load More Replies...hilarious that he only took the part because he thought it would never last...
For that matter Kate Mulgrew is the only Kathryn Janeway for me. Genevieve Bujold was originally cast and her portrayal in the clip I’ve seen is wooden and unexciting compared to Kate.
I was a fan of Next Generation when I was growing. Watching Picard all I can think is "damn they're all so old!". Which means I must be old too!
Heath Ledger's Joker.
FloydsForked:
This is the one for me. The most epic performance of all time.
Agreed. And as much as I loved Julie Newmar, Eartha Kitt will always be Catwoman
Load More Replies...Cesar Romero played Joker as a trickster, Jack Nicholson as a gangster and Heath Ledger as a sociopath. All of them nailed their particular version.
Thank you for this. I could never put my finger on exactly why I liked them all and you explained them so pointedly. Edit: word
Load More Replies...I'm still stuck on Jack Nicholson's version, for some reason he scared me more than Ledger's Joker.
I agree with you - my favorite too. Bring on the downvotes.
Load More Replies...This is 100% true, at least for me. His Joker is just *chef's kiss*
Mark Hamill was the voice for the cartoons kinda wonder how he would have done live action. Most likely wouldn't have worked because he will always be Luke Skywalker, but his voice work was great.
Cesar Romero was great (with his mustache covered with white makeup) for the TV show that bent toward campy. Ledger did play an excellent sociopath. Nicholson played it more to the story, where Batman caused him to plunge into a toxic mess. This left him disfigured and vengeful. He was also very intelligent, cunning and about 25 degrees off center.
Sigourney Weaver as Ripley.
I understand, and hope it is actually true, that the role for Ripley was written as a male actor. Then they found Saint Sigourney and went with her. And didn't change the character dialog, actions, anything. Sigourney IS Ripley.
To this day I compare all female tv/movie 'badasses' to Ripley. She's the OG.
Raul Julia as Gomez Addams.
I'll get downvoted, but I don't care. John Astin was better IMHO. And Carolyn Jones was the better Morticia. Raul and Angelica blatantly ripped off both of them. Watch a handful of the TV episodes and it's bright as day. You can't convince me otherwise.
Load More Replies...Anjelica Huston as Morticia was perfect and Christina Ricci is the only real Wednesday .
Christina Ricci CHANGED the way Wednesday Addams is portrayed.

Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. if Hugh dies they should retire that character same with the Black Panther.
I think Jackman is terrific as Wolverine, but I’d love to see other actors’ takes on the character. And Chadwick Boseman was great as Black Panther, but there’s no way he would’ve wanted the character retired after his death. It’s a very important character for many young people who don’t see themselves represented enough in superhero roles. Besides Shuri already took up the mantle of Black Panther in the sequel, but I’m not certain that will stick. And really Black Panther is a character that makes the most sense to change actors since it is a position passed down in their culture.
Minor spoilers for Deadpool and Wolverine, but one actor a lot of people think can take up the mantle afterwards is Henry Cavill. He only had a short cameo as a different version of Wolverine, and like Deadpool says, it just feels right. Dunno if he can do the role as much justice as Hugh Jackman, but I'd be down to see a Henry Cavill Wolverine movie.
Load More Replies...Dougray Scot was meant to play the part, but filming on Mission: Impossible 2 overran - John Woo was directing, was going to happen - and that meant he couldn’t start preparation in time for the filming of X-Men. I do think his version of Wolverine would have been more moodier, darker.
Have to disagree. I think he ruined the character compared to the Claremont vision in the 70s.
Tom Hanks and in Forest Gump.
tojifajita:
Honestly for me it is actually Tom hanks in Cast away, I see that character in every other movie, lonely deranged man.
Grew up w him on happy days near the end (karate guy) and on bosom buddies. That was funny as heck.
What the heck, Forrest Gump is the opposite of lonely deranged man....tojifajita is weird.
Kathy Bates as Annie Wilkes in 1990 film adaptation of Stephen King's 1987 novel "Misery".

Just rewatched this at the local theater recently, and she is the reason that film holds up to this day.
Kathy Bates is great in pretty much anything and everything. Even in her sitcom appearances.
So very much this. Brilliant actress, total class.
Load More Replies...Yes! Her performance in misery tainted her roles for me anywhere else, I kept expecting her to go psycho. Even in Fried Green Tomatoes where she was perfect...

RDJ as Iron Man and Chris Hemsworth as Thor.
RDJ has been superb in many varied roles. I was astounded by his acting years ago, and remain so. He is a chameleon.
Bryan Cranston as Walter White "Heisenberg".
Sharp_Ad_6336:
The fact that he was able to break the mental association we all had of him as Hal from Malcolm in the middle is the true tribute to how well he nailed that role.
My son kept trying to get me to watch Breaking Bad but I don't like dramas. It seemed too intense. Then he showed me an article where Anthony Hopkins said that Bryan Cranston as Walter White was the best acting he'd ever seen. That made me decide I had to see it. Bryan Cranston is fantastic but so is everyone else, and the writing is phenomenal. It is intense but I'm so glad i watched it.
At one point, they wanted Matthew Broderick as Walter White. So glad they got Bryan Cranston instead.
Some can be but it's tricky. For example watching "Julia" (a bio-series about chef Julia Child) I never quite got over the feeling that I was watching Miles Crane pretending to be Paul Child. In fact, during the first episode I kept asking myself "Why is this guy channeling MIles Crane?" Not until I saw the credits did I realize that it WAS David Hyde Pierce.

Alan Rickman as Hans Gruber in Die Hard.

Jack Nicholson - "One flew over the cuckoos nest" and "The Shining".
Cristof Waltz/ Hans Landa.

Sean Connery was my favorite Bond, but Daniel Craig isn't far behind for me.
Ian Fleming said that Connery was the closest, as the character is half Scottish and half Swiss.

Hugo Weaving as Agent Smith.
Bang! I just realized V from V for Vendetta is Agent Smith! Well, butter my behind and call me a biscuit!
I came here to say this. He's amazing!
Load More Replies...Hugo Weaving, period. Every role he's handed he acts his butt off and completely owns the character, and his voice is mesmerizing. I'm also besotted with his niece, Samara Weaving. She has the best 'horror scream' i've heard in years.
Hugo Weaving was so good as Agent Smith that when I later saw him as Elrond in LOTR, it was HARD for me to not see Agent Smith! No hate to Weaving, I LOVE him, but I kinda wish he had been a little less scowl-y as Elrond, because I feel like that made me see Agent Smith more than Elrond, and plus, I had just finished reading the book before going to see the movie in theatres, and Elrond's description in the book was that he was very kind and warm, and the films made him seem kind of cold and judge-y.
For me, it was "...Priscillia Queen of the Desert." I was only 9 when the movie came out, but I loved it so much! I even learned all the dances so I could dance along. Have I mentioned enough that I was an odd kid? lol. It was weird for me to see him go on to play Agent Smith, but I think after that big of a mind reset, it was easier for me to transition him to Elrond.

Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday in Tombstone.
Dustin Hoffman in Rainman.
Tom Cruise was really great in it too. I’m not normally a fan of his, but he was amazing in Rain Man
I love Dustin Hoffman! He's great in so many movies including Hook!
Javier Bardem as Anton Chigurh.
Sayon7:
I think he’s the scariest villain ever
OMG! He scared me so much how unsettling he was in the role. That hair do didn't help either.
Thought I saw a headline once that psychologists stated Bardem's performance in No Country For Old Men was the best on-screen portrayal of a psychopath they'd ever seen. Boss level acting.
Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca and Alan Alda in MASH.
Without him I don't think the show would have worked.
Load More Replies...Why did they put poor Alan with Humphrey in one post? Alan deserves his own post!! He was amazing in MASH and that show was truly great. I have it on DvD (yes.... I'm old enough to be able to laugh on my own, thanks! (So for anyone interested: get the laughtrack-free audio if you can!! It makes the show 100 times better)
M*A*S*H was the best TV show ever! Not many shows can walk that tightrope of making me laugh and cry (often in the same episode), especially considering the horrible subject matter of war.
Alan Alda. It's sad he had to retire due to Parkinson's. I'd love to see him get a big meaty role in something modern. His work on The West Wing was excellent
Sylvester Stallone, Rocky.
KeyKick7759:
I agree I've enjoyed other boxer films but none have ever got to me like Rocky did.

It's so good it makes me uncomfortable to such a degree. Incredible performance(s).
I disagree here, M Night Shyalaman did no research for this role when writing the movie. It was quite clichéd when finally edited.
I went into the movie understanding that this wasn't going to be an "accurate" portrayal. Hardly any movie ever gets mental.illness right, and they tend to play up the stereotypes for shock & entertainment. Knowing that, I was able to watch the movie for what it was, a psychological thriller. I loved James McAvoy in this movie for the acting, not the story.

I think most of them were pretty unremarkable and very replaceable. Most roles could have been done by some random other good actor and turn out just as well. I feel like people are attached to those actors because they happened to see them as kids and the movies/books meant so much to them.
I don't know. I think Dame Maggie Smith is pretty irreplaceable. I think she might be the only one, much as I've always adored Warwick Davis. I did love Alan Rickman, but he was too old.
Load More Replies...All the actors did their job very well, but they didn't fit the characters described in the books at all! Snape is supposed to be 33 in the first film, Sirius 35 in the 3rd. Fred and George are stocky and not tall and slender like Ron and Percy are supposed to be. Harry has messy hair and green eyes. Let's not even talk about Hermione... Krum has sunken eyes and a nose that makes him look like an eagle. Etc.
Much of that is the issue of having to cast people who can act, not just match the character type. There's no excuse for the ages except wanting to cast known names. However fred and George needed to be identical twins who could act and come across as pranksters and be believable as Rupert Grint's brothers, matching physical types was lower on the list. Ron had to fit with Harry and Hermione, preferably be a redhead, and was cast at 11 so predicting how he'd grow up is not the easiest thing. Everyone says Emma Watson is too pretty to be Hermione, but that's both a typical movie problem and something you can't actually know is going to happen when you cast an 11 year old. Children with perpetually messy hair don't get cast in movies and styled messy hair looks like styled messy hair.
