The social distancing has made me more creative.

Back in 2004 a friend gave me tickets to see John Mayer and passes to meet him in Vegas. I was so excited I went out and bought my first digital camera. I was all ready to tell John what a fan I was and how dreamy I thought he was. But when we arrived, I panicked. I barely spoke and when I went to take photos of my friends and John I kept turning the camera off instead of pressing the photo button. It was a disaster. Looking back, I am not sure what I was so scared of.

This is a big story for me. I tell it all the time. John was so nice. But then as time passed it became more of a metaphor for seizing opportunities and not being afraid. I use it all the time to illustrate taking a chance, what is the worst that can happen! I’ve always regretted not saying more. I have no ending to the story. But It could have ended “and then I asked for his number and he… said no…. said yes and we are still friends…. we dated…”who knows. Not me!

Fast forward to now. I work for the Humane Society of San Bernardino Valley, a 501c3 nonprofit with a low cost spay/neuter clinic, humane education program and cruelty investigation program. We are celebrating our 50th anniversary this year with the Golden Paws Gala. This is an important fundraiser for us, since we are a private nonprofit (fundraising for ourselves)not affiliated with the HSUS, ASPCA, or the government. Like everything else this year, the event was postponed (to January 30, 2021).

My cousin, Sarah, and I came up with the idea to recreate an episode of Current Mood and ask John to attend the Gala with me. We moved forward with the plan this past weekend even though the event was pushed back. Honestly, it was the most fun I have had during this pandemic time. If nothing comes of the video, at least I had fun! My cousin helped build the set and my son loaned us some old stuffed animals from when he was little.

For anyone who watched Current Mood, they will appreciate the details in this video- the replica backdrop, the music, reading the “comments” section, the blue notecards, my tie dye shirt and watch, etc. It turned out even better than we thought it would!

The link to the video is below. We hope John sees it and I can get an ending for my story.
