I Parodied All 151 Original Pokemon, And Here Are The First 40 In Order

As any child of the 90s, I grew up on Pokemon. On Saturday mornings, the show was all-consuming Game Boy video games and the cards that you tried to collect all of. Who had what card and would trade you for what. (I got one card away from a complete set, by the way.) After a couple of generations of games, videos, and Pokemon memes, I lost track of it all.

Over the course of three years, I have taken that child obsession and made it an artistic one. I parodied all the original First Generation Pokemon using wordplay with each one’s name. The process included writing each piece with a punny title and conceiving the image to illustrate it. Each piece was sketched traditionally on Bristol board from reference and inked using a sable brush and India ink. The work was scanned and colored digitally in Photoshop, where I also added the text.

Today, I share the first 40 Pokemon in order. (Mostly because I can only upload 40 images!) Let me know if you like them (or don’t!)! I would love to hear your comments and feedback and if you’d like to see more.

I started working on parody Pokemon cards satirizing their attacks and weaknesses based on wordplay. Only 25 or so are done, but maybe I will share them sometime soon as well. Let me know if you’d like to see those, too!

You can find all of my recent work on Instagram.

I hope you enjoy it.
