I am an industrial designer with a keen interest in colors, but I was always doodling or taking black and white photos. I grew up with my grandfather in a hotel in the South of Chile were he was the “Maître d’hôtel”, or Headwaiter. I passed a lot of my time doodling on the bar while he worked.
Many years later, arriving in Montréal, I obtained my first set of paints from the street. It was a snowy December day and a lady, clearing out her basement, passed me everything she had dug out. It was a great Christmas.
After 8 years living in Canada, and seeing the deep colors of the forests, I noted how they change people.
I started to wonder how I can reflect their changing colors in portraits, and also satisfy my craving to paint. I didn’t want to do the work of a good camera; I wanted to paint what the camera couldn’t.
These acrylic portraits of a semi Fauvist style, contrast vivid colors in abstraction. A richness in variety can be seen among Montréal locals, regardless of their South American, North American or European origins.
