I’ve always found underwater images very calming. There is a sense of isolation and quiet under the water. Communication is limited and you can be alone with your thoughts, even when in the company of others. The rest of the world continues to hustle and bustle above the surface, oblivious to the hush and calm beneath. The water supports you and flows around you, directing your movement with a languid touch.

There is something almost hypnotic about the way things move underwater. With people it’s the flow of hair, the billowing of fabric, the pressure of the water forcing movement to slow like an alluring dance. It is as close as we will ever get to flying or falling with the grace of slow motion.

No two images are the same when shooting ink in water. It has no boundaries and moves with the ebb and flow of the water surrounding it. It’s an organic flow that is unpredictable and always unique.

It seemed a natural progression to me to combine images of ink and images of billowing fabric. To blend some of the most beautiful elements of underwater imagery into something extraordinary and ethereal. To manipulate the colours and skin tones to reinforce a sense of vulnerability and delicacy. To create something that conveys a sense of grace and calm in a torrid and turbulent world.
