I Just Did My First Maternity Shoot With My Wife…and I Think We Nailed It

I’ve been a professional photographer in the action sports and fitness industries for more than ten years. During that time I’ve never shot a wedding or done a portrait session—it’s just not the type of photography I do.

However, now that my wife is 36 weeks pregnant I figured it was time for me to step outside of my comfort zone and do my first maternity shoot. And I think we nailed it!

We searched around for a local portrait photographer to shoot photos for us, but in the end I just couldn’t justify paying someone else to shoot photos of my wife when I have been a full-time photographer for ten years.

We bought a $24 dress online and used some white workout shorts my wife had to create the whimsical outfit for the shoot.

We looked online for examples of how people pose in maternity photos and saved images to my phone to reference while we were shooting.

We also used a $13 t-shirt dress and borrowed a friend’s hat to get a different, more playful look in some of the photos.

We had to work around seaweed, people, and rising tides to get the shots.

I used a completely different style of editing than I’ve ever used before—it was a true learning experience.

All of the photos were shot using ambient light—no flashes of any kind.

Luckily my wife was patient with me when I got frustrated during the shoot…it was stressful working against the setting sun!

My wife also did a great of of modeling for the camera to help the photos really come to l life!

We tried so hard to keep her dress dry so it would still fly in the wind, but the waves kept coming!

Living near such beautiful beaches definitely has its perks!

Trying to direct my wife was difficult because the waves were so loud. We had to learn impromptu sign language to communicate with each other during some of the shots.

It’s going to be so fun to show these photos to our baby girl some day.

For now we wait…just a few more weeks until she arrives!

For my first time doing a maternity shoot I couldn’t have asked for better models, and I think we nailed it!
