I Created A Typeface From Maps I Hand Drew Of 26 Cities Of The World

I have been drawing maps for many years, but decided I needed a more focused challenge. I decided to draw a map a day, but wanted an even more specific brief. I hit upon the idea of creating a typeface, with each letter being a unique map.

I chose 26 key cities from around the world, one for each letter of the alphabet. Then, using my trusty Pilot G-TEC C4 pen, I hand drew each city – placing each within its initial letter.

I managed to create one a day for 26 days until the alphabet was complete (using the added pressure of posting daily on social media so I couldn’t cheat!)

As an expressive cartographer, I take conventional maps and then deconstruct, redraw and reinterpret them into something new, trying to explore the hidden beauty of these cartographic landscapes. I use a combination of pen drawing, lino printing, screen printing, digital painting and collage to create each map.
