Using cutting edge rare earth phosphors that absorb light energy and release it in the dark, I have been experimenting with painted illusions in the tromp l’oile tradition. The phosphors glow in the dark and using this to my artistic advantage I create the illusion of the starry heavens and night landscapes that can only be seen in total darkness!
The mural is invisible by day, your ceiling or walls look completely normal, just as it does right now. But at night, when the lights are off it appears that your ceiling or wall is gone and you are looking at the most beautiful starry night scene imaginable! For all the years that I have been creating art, I have always looked to nature for relaxation, inspiration, and creativity. I remember when I was a young man and I would hike up into the mountains to camp out under the open sky… lying under all those beautiful stars and contemplating the vastness of the universe away from the light pollution of the cities. For me it was exciting as well as soothing. I wanted a way to capture that feeling for my art collectors.

Bali Hai Tunnels Beach Kauai Glow-In-The-Dark Mural
This glow in the dark mural, “Bali Hai, Tunnels Beach, Kauai” measures 10 feet tall and is almost 17 feet wide!
It is painted on a plain white canvas and was mounted on a wall. The mural is virtually invisible in the daytime or when the rooms lights are on! The scene is accurate and is the view is from Tunnels Beach looking towards the Bali Hai Cliffs of the North Napali coast on the Hawaiian Island of Kauai. This mural is astonishing in it’s beauty and the realism that I captured using nothing but five different glowing phosphors on a white wall.
