In January and February each year, Tampa, Fl is invaded by Pirates. This started in 1904 when a mythological pirate named Jose Gaspar and his Krewe "attacked" Tampa on horse back during May Day celebrations and were given the key to the city. The invasion has turned into a yearly tradition with amazing parades that bring around $40 million dollars to the local economy each year.
The Jose Gaspar ship stays moored off Bayshore blvd. near Tampa General Hospital year round. Many people take to the water on their boats following the ship into downtown, others stick to celebrating on land. Groups, called Krewes raise money for charity's, have their own traditions for how their costumes are made and join in the parade throwing beads from their floats.
Tampa, especially South Tampa, has another tradition of decorating their doors with Pirate themed wreaths. These pictured are some of my creations. I'll share more photos as I create them.
