Far right groups and a priest try to destroy an art installation in a church in Belgium.
The Holy Cow project by Tom Herck involves placing a white cast of a cow in a church behind a 5000 ltr milk bath, highlighting the waste of empty churches (space) and the food industry. A protest related to the project led to clashes between supporters and critics, raising questions about artistic expression and public sensitivities.
A chapel where studies of the project were shown was set on fire, causing significant damage.
In addition, the church where the installation was presented, a local priest destroyed a church window and tried to put the work down with a long stick connected to a knife. Later, 2 more attempts were made by ultra catholics and far right organisations.
These incidents targeted the cow sculpture, sparking debates about expressing dissent towards art. The project ignited controversy by questioning societal values and prompting discussions about freedom of expression, public awareness, and art’s role in society.
