Man Wanted To Buy His Wife A Nice Bouquet Of Roses, But Amazon Suggested Substituting An Organic Bell Pepper And 3 More People Share Their Hilarious Experiences
Online shopping is a wonderful thing. No need to wait around in queues or to actually interact with people—just add to cart and you’re good to go (having money in your account helps too.) Like the majority of online businesses, the big online stores use algorithms to suggest you products if the ones you actually need are out of stock. However, that algorithm isn’t perfect, to say the least.
Recently, some proof of it went viral on Twitter. One man shared a screenshot of a hilarious substitution option suggested to him by Amazon. Instead of getting a bouquet of roses that were no longer available, the page suggested that the man buy… an organic bell pepper.

“Can’t wait to surprise my wife with an organic red bell pepper!” Andreas Hagemann wrote a caption upon sharing a screenshot of the Amazon suggestion. The poor guy only wanted to give his wife a nice bouquet of roses, but while they’re out of stock on Whole Foods Market on Amazon, hopefully, red bell peppers will do just as well.
The hilarious tweet went pretty viral, with over 21k likes and over 4k retweets. “That’s one way to keep things spicy,” one Twitter user commented. “I hope she’s not on Twitter today, lest the surprise be ruined!” another one added.

“Imagine coming home and finding a trace of organic red bell peppers leading to a candlelit hot bath with more organic bell peppers (so not quite like this picture, but there aren’t so many bell pepper bath photos around),” one Twitter user wrote jokingly and shared a photo of a bathtub full of green bell peppers. “Like a romantic goulash,” she added.

Intrigued about how come there’s a photo of a bathtub and a bed full of bell peppers? Apparently, “there was a house on sale in Stockholm in 2014,” the user who shared the photos wrote. “The seller with the photographer Johan Larsson wanted to do something different for the ad—bell peppers. The so-called Paprikahuset went viral.”
“I loved it. It went from ‘quite a few peppers on the counter’ to ‘is that a pepper on the shelf’ to ‘what’s going on with all these peppers.’ I read that the owners didn’t trash any but instead ate a lot of peppers after the photo shoot: grilled, filled, salads, ratatouille,” her story continued.
The man hoped he could even turn the bell peppers into “an edible arrangement”

One Twitter user explained that it’s quite a common occurrence in online stores

“I work for Whole Foods in the Amazon Prime Now department and we’re required to replace out of stock items with whatever the algorithm decides even if we don’t have anything remotely similar,” the person wrote. “I’ve felt bad sending people ham slices when one specific brand of wine is out,” he revealed.
