They are long-gone now but IF not I say Thomas Midgley. This one person was nearly single-handedly responsible for not only leaded gasoline but also those horrible CFC chemicals. The worst part is he knew the lead was toxic but pushed it anyway over less toxic octane boosters like ethanol because the lead was cheaper and would make more profit.
The "scientist" who faked the data used for the research paper saying autism was caused my mmr vaccine. Not sure it qualifies as an invention but it was the first person who came to mind
