Popular doesn't always equal good. Therefore let's see your controversial opinions on popular book series.

I wish Anne Frank's real diary was released without being edited at all. I want to read the FULL authentic one. Apparently they cut out quite a lot of it before it's release.

I don't think it should though. It's her personal thoughts, and she wrote it for herself, never intended it to be published

And this is why my idea is controversial. It's okay to have different opinions. And while I do somewhat agree with you, it would be really interesting to read the original either way.😊

I just recently became aware of this. I can see why it was bowdlerized but I think it has been long enough that it should probably be read in its entirety now. This is an opinion besed on what I read about it so take it with a grain of salt.

To the best of my knowledge, much if not all of this has been published. Shortly before his death in 1980, Otto Frank released five pages that he had removed from her diary prior to initial publication, and in 2018 more pages that had been hidden by Anne herself were discovered. I think this has all been published now.

I agree in principle, but only in the circumstance that it had been stolen from her and she had still been alive when it was published. But I Strongly believe that what she wrote lets girls know that the feelings they have are normal. That they are not alone, and do not have to be ashamed of their thoughts and feelings. We never would have read her words if she hadn't been murdered by the 3rd Reich.

Twilight. The entire series was like watching a train wreck and I don't see why people love it so much. Admittedly, I've never been a big vampire fan but it was dreadful, especially in comparison to other authors I read at the time.

Me and my friend were at the school library. She picked up the twilight books and said "my friend likes this book series, and I'm a fan of murder mysteries." I then said that they were romance novels about vampires and you have never seen someone put a book away so fast.

Read them, they were... on the bad side of meh, watched the movies and actually loved them! Not because they were good, but because I got to watch them with my mom, who usually never likes anything I like, but she watched the movies as they came out with my older sisters. It was nice to have quality time with my mom, which is the only reason I cared for them at all.

It's a train wreck and that's what makes it funny. I distinctly remember one chapter where they established over and over the colour of Charlie's shirt and then, in one sentence, they call his shirt a different colour. Like clearly no one edited this book. I love it for the lols.

Agree- why worship him when we have Prof. Mcgonnagal right there? She's amazing tbh. Honestly though him loving Lily was not enough to redeem him and honestly made it worse when you think about it- he verbally abused her, probably stalked her, attacked her husband, and WALKED OVER HIS DEAD BODY AND IGNORED HER SCEAMING INFANT to hold her dead body. Ffs man. Plus he bullied Neville for no reason at all.

I don't glorify Snape but honestly, I think that movies make him look worse than the books. Starting with the fact that in books Snape wasn't present at Godric's Hollow during or after Potters' deaths, let alone stepping over James's body. He was immature and there were many situations (especially in the first few books) where he could do things better but in the books 5-7 imho he did everything he could to do as much good as he was able to without showing to Voldemort his true loyalties. At this point he couldn't openly be good toward Dumbledore or Harry's allies without risking his life. I see him as a overly-jaded bullying victim who never got a proper closure when it comes to his victims since they all were either dead or imprisoned very shortly after school.

Also, remember that book-Snape is significally younger than movie-Snape. At the beginning of the first book he's only 31. Given that he never received proper help (let's be honest, Dumbledore sort of s***ed his life too) or had opportunity to work over his many problems, there's no wonder he's still riled up by his past and trauma. Worth glorifying? No. But definitely doesn't deserve hate too.

It was part of his deception of Voldemort. He could never be seen as being nice, or fair to the one Voldemort viewed as his rival. Remember the profacy. V tried to kill Harry. And never stopped wanting him dead. Snape could not risk showing kindness to his "leaders" no.1 enemy.

Here, an upvote for you. There's nothing wrong with enjoying any genre/book that you like. Of course, not everybody has to like it but you shouldn't be forced to be ashamed of your choices because of this. I was reading "Twilight" series when I was 13-14 or so and I actually enjoyed it at the time. As years passed I noticed some plot holes or writing flaws I had not noticed as a teenager but it doesn't make me regret reading the series because this way I am at least aware of the content and able to formulate my opinion about it. Also, I enjoyed it at the time of the reading and that's what matters the most.

I think people misunderstand that "classic" doesn't necessarily mean "good" or "enjoyable." Works which are labeled as classics, or foundational, are there because they did something really new, for the first time. It also means it can probably be done better, and we should appreciate it as a piece of history, not the epitome of literary enjoyment. Lord of the Rings was terrible. I tried so hard to like it. It was truely tedious. It was unique because of its in-depth structure, history, language, and world-building. That doesn't mean it was *well written.* A structurally sound building, which reaches new heights, doesn't guarantee it's aesthetically pleasing.

I'm guessing that most people who thought LOTR was boring were too young when they read it. I was 18, and even at that age there were aspects of the book that I didn't get until my third or fourth reading. The films were beautiful to look at but the content showed that Peter Jackson missed a lot of the deeper themes that were essential to the understanding of the book.

I think The Lord of the Rings has a lot of depth as long as you have the stomach to get through it. It’s easier watching the movies first. I found it impossible to get through until I watched the movies. Now it’s a well loved series, though I do need to make sure I have more than my usual amount of brain cells at hand when I want a reread. Honestly, though, Tolkien is a genius, and if you know what’s going on, the series can be very enjoyable. It’s quite well written over all, but definitely not to everyone’s taste. Which is why the movies are there! Which…I think I already mentioned. Oops.

I love Harry Potter, like so much. But it drives me crazy that the whole story is based on the lazy old trope of all of the conflict being a huge misunderstanding because people just don’t share information with each other. What’s worse is that the adults just shut the kids down before hearing them out, even though they’ve been right and basically saved all their asses like a million times. Or they don’t tell the kids important information because they’re “too young”. They seem to think that they’re not too young to be in mortal danger over and over but sure, let’s preserve their childhood innocence. I started using it in reference to other books and shows. I call it “doing a Harry Potter”. I do something similar with The Flintstones but that’s another story for another day lol. It’s just now occurring to me that this is probably how kids perceive how adults treat them so maybe it is actually valid, because yeah, it’s a book FOR KIDS. But when Harry’s like “Guys, Draco is totally a Death Eater” and even his best friends are like “Impossible! Don’t be ridiculous!” I want to scream!

Agreed. It’s basically a storyline about a hundred year old, controlling narcissist preying on the emotions of an innocent teenage girl that he lured in with glitter and then ending her life at 18. Do we really want young girls to think that’s what love should be like?

    #11

Game of Thrones has done an irreparable damage on the fantasy genre. It set a trend that everything must be "dark, mature and realistic" which usually means "extremely bleak with lots of graphic, senseless violence and tasteless erotica". I find it sad to see fantasy / sci-fi losing its magic and escapism in favor of "realism".

There are countless dark, mature and realistic old fantasy works, including The Witcher, for example (the books are full of very disturbing stuff). Game of Thrones just happened to make it to the top.

I mean I want my fantasy to have some form of dark realism to it but I don’t want it’s whole personality to be the goth kid in the corner who wants gut you. That’s why it’s called fantasy because we have enough of that b******t in the real world

Fan fiction is nothing but plagerism. The fan-fiction writer steals the characters and settings because they’re too lazy to create their own characters and settings.

Only the first two or three arcs of the Warriors Cats series were really needed. They kept on creating more arcs, and that led to the decline of the series for me. It got confusing, and of course you could never figure out exactly how to read all of them in order (unless you're a billionaire with money on your hands). Also, they began to focus more on churning them out than actually putting content. (Also- there is no Erin Hunter. It's six writers who make some amazing books on their own, but they do need to let this plot line go.)

I love really long book series. Like the longer the better. I have a hard time with stories ending. This might not be controversial or unpopular, but since I am probably the biggest reader I know, it seems like I'm in the minority. My favorite long series includes: Harry Potter (of course) The Chicagoland Vampires, House Of Night series Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Soul Screamers, and so many others. Other unpopular opinion: as an adult (31 years-old), I prefer to read YA novels instead of adult books. YA is just more fun in my opinion.

Riffing off of #12, I think YA is better because it hasn't (yet) succumbed to the idea that fantasy needs to be gritty and dark to feel 'real'.

Hunger Games: Story was good, but IMO Peeta was useless and didn't need to be in the series, also I didn't like the forced love triangle between Katniss, Peeta, and Gale Maze Runner: Never liked Teresa's character, also didn't like how Thomas seemed to get special treatment for being The Main Character (scorch trials: tons of gladers die and WICKED doesn't care, he gets shot in the shoulder and WICKED fusses over him?!?)

I've never read Maze Runner- but I somewhat agree with the Hunger Games. I think Peeta had great bones for a character- being the more pacifist person to Katniss's fighter, a thinker to her impulsiveness, and the planner and speaker. I do like him, he does seem to have more personality than Gale (again, IMO.) We got more time with Peeta and most of what we see of Gale is him being a slightly less feisty male Katniss- honestly he feels more like her brother, or, as their cover is, a cousin. Idk though

I REALLY VERY STRONGLY dislike the Hunger Games. Now, Ladies and Gentlemen, sit back and enjoy this Caffeine-Fuelled Two-Thirty-AM scathing rant about why I hate this overrated, pathetic series: Firstly, the writing. In my opinion, the writing is absolutely horrendous. Multiple lines make zero sense and I have no idea why they weren't cut during editing as there is no point to them being there. The series is not very fast-paced and it took over half the book to get to the actual Games during the second book. As well as this, whilst it's slow-paced, it just doesn't explain certain aspects of the story or fleshes out scenes / actions properly which leaves the reader confused + the dialogue is especially bad. Secondly, the main character herself. Katniss is an EXTREMELY unlikeable protagonist, she's riddled with self-doubt and whilst usually this would give the character an opportunity to grow and expand in their confidence, Katniss stays SO PATHETIC throughout the entire series. I know this may be to exemplify the horror of what she's are living through but it simply unenjoyable for a reader to have to read page after page about how the protagonist hates herself, feels she is useless, always messed up, will fail her family, etc. I STRONGLY dislike her character. Thirdly, the rest of the character & the pathetic attempt at a love triangle. Almost every character is NOT expand on character's motives, flaws, ambitions, etc. (quick example: Prim. We know she's Katniss's innocent younger sister, but we have zero insight to what she wants in life, her inner struggles, anything. It's just "oh look her Katniss has a cute sister you need to like her because we're going to kill her off later so YOU MUST BE SAD!!) I have taken zero liking to ANY characters, although in the first book I grew fond of a few but they just ended up getting killed off and no new likeable characters were introduced throughout the rest of the series. EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER (sorry for caps!) is extremely one-dimensional and I feel the author made no attempt at writing relatable, or even remotely LIKEABLE characters. Also, the love triangle is extremely poorly written and it was obvious what was going to happen right from the start. Next, there is too much focus on the politics and far too little on the Hunger Games themselves. As I said earlier, it takes over half the book for them to start in the second one, and THERE ISN'T EVEN A HUNGER GAMES in the third!! What I came to read about is a dangerous, high-stakes, kill-or-be-killed death game between intelligent, skilled, and yet VULNERABLE young people who will use their wits to outsmart the others and struggle with the morality of killing throughout their journey; to make allies and enemies and to end up learning a greater lesson in the end. But NOPE, instead we get long, droning, bland, tasteless political garbage that I could barely stay awake reading. And this is all that was happening during the third book, I HATED that one with a burning, fiery passion. Lastly, expanding on my previous point, there is SEVERE lack of inner torment for the characters involved with the games. This is probably my greatest gripe with the series. There is ZERO, and I mean ZERO, inner troubles about having to literally KILL CHILDREN. I wish Katniss had set a trap, caught a defenseless child, and had to kill them, probably while they begged for mercy. THAT would give her something to feel bad about. But NO, all we have is ruthless murderers and psychopaths, reading to slit the throats of toddlers. WE'RE TALKING ABOUT THIRTEEN-YEAR-OLDS. Surely at least ONE of them would feel bad? But of course, no! Each character, despite seemingly being very young, seems to have the mental age of twenty. This is incredibly unrealistic and believable. The ONE THING that could VASTLY improve the entire series is to GIVE YOUR CHARACTERS A DAMN CONSCIENCE. There are no redeeming qualities to this book. Overrated and Horribly Written.

I agree with this, I considered putting the series down at multiple points (I didn't because my mom and sister begged me to finish because it was supposedly good) I also really like what you said about Prim. It never really occurred to me that she WAS just there to draw pity from the reader. It would have been great if we learned more about Katniss' family including her dad through the eyes of her mom and Prim (because Katniss just makes him out to be some hunter guy she inherited her skill from)

Court of Thorns and Roses series by Sarah J Maas. It's WAY too overrated to be considered good, and I picked it up thinking it would be a good fantasy book. The first book in the series was good, but it quickly became more and more erotic as the stories went on. I know a lot of people enjoyed it, but I found it dull and simplistic.

A lot of older books had that problem, and I think it was because at the time, writers were paid by the word/line. So they had to add tons of detail to make money. If they were able to write what they wanted, those books would probably be quite different.

No, older books like “War and Peace” and “Crime and Punishment” are long and detailed because when they were written, there was no TV, no computers, no movies. Readers wanted to be entertained for hours or even days, and they were. They had much longer attention spans back then.

OK go for the lowest hanging fruit. Harry Potter is derivative of just about every other successful fantasy book series. J.K liberally nicks from everyone else like C.S. Lewis, Roald Dahl, Tolkein, Jill Murphy (particularly Jill Murphy, the worst witch series predates HP by a good 20 years or so yet Hogwarts is basically a rip-off of Miss Cackles Academy for Witches). So it's weirdly satisfying to see her popularity dwindle away now she's turned out to be a weird TERF / transphobic

I separate works from authors. If I didn't, I would read nothing. There are a LOT of homophobic, and terrible people, who make enjoyable artworks. That said, I also don't think it makes a work bad just because it's a derivative work, or "steals" from predecessors. I actually like when people use the experience of others to write a new adventure. For example, game-writers have a habit of jumping into a genre without knowing anything about it, or ever having played the genre...it just makes poor games, and every "new" game repeats the same mistakes. Authors can work the same way. It's okay not to like something that others like. Also while I liked Harry Potter, as a kid, it's not my favourite series, and I am weirded out by the fandom.

Very sensible - and despite what I wrote above she did a hell of a job character and world building, which is no mean feat in a genre where 'borrowing from others' is pretty much the norm. It's also v sensible to assess the works on their own merit and distance them from the creator but the more you pick at something...(personally I've been disappointed by the number of creatives I always had huge respect for that have ended up as BREXIT-supporting gammons so it's definitely not limited to JK)

The HP series requires way too much suspension of disbelief after a while. I mean imagine a parent going “So Mr Dumbledore last year you hired a dude who received a life sentence for torture, kidnapped another dude for a year, killed people AND had a magic eye which he would regularly use to see through children’s clothes? And not only are you still headmaster, but you want me to send my kid to your school? Well damn! Sign me up bro.”

HP sank in quality as the books went on, a direct result of editors laying off. Rowling is a master at foreshadowing, good at plotting, decent at characterization but not that great at exposition. Not to mention being pretty awful at being a decent person. Who attacks a marginalized, prone-to-suicide population?

I don't understand what you mean when you say she "attacks a marginalized, prone-to-suicide population"? The things she has said includes "I know and love trans people, but erasing the concept of sex removes the ability of many to meaningfully discuss their lives" and "I respect every trans person’s right to live any way that feels authentic and comfortable to them. I’d march with you if you were discriminated against on the basis of being trans. At the same time, my life has been shaped by being female. I do not believe it’s hateful to say so" - please tell me how this constitutes "attacking" trans people?

I don't see people talking about this much but The Selection series was only good until The Heir book, then it took a turn into incredibly boring. I really enjoyed hungar games and Divergent and I think Katniss and Tris were really interesting characters except for the last books of those series which I had to force myself to finish. Also I love Twilight, the movies are terrible but the books are fun and filled with diolague, maybe not the best written love story in the world but I found it to be a light and enjoyable read.

Hunger Games - what an idiotic series. It takes people 75 years to get angry and rise up against getting their kids killed. And why did the president snow just kill her? The other victors talked about how their loved ones where killed or after they won, they were forced to sleep with other rich people...but he just lets her go about her business with just vague threats.

This. I really enjoyed them at first, but they got so preachy! Like, each chapter you just expected a 3-page long monologue. It got so bad that I started skipping ahead until Richard shut up and it got back to the plot. It was unfortunate, too, because I think Goodkind created some really cool characters. I remember picking up each book and having a list of characters I was so afraid would get killed off and being so relieved when they survived, but eventually I just got tired of how sanctimonious it got and gave up.

Yes! But I listened to them on CD so I had to listen through Richard's droning on and on and on. I've seriously wondered how Goodkind got away with thinking his readers needed to be lectured ad nauseum on every topic imaginable...or does he just think women are stupid since he was always lecturing Kahlen and Cara?

The Wheel of Time. The people all suck. It is said that Robert Jordan must have hated women because of the way he wrote them. The men any better in their own ways. And on top of the frustration of shitty, bickering, manipulative jerks/idiots you have the boredom of hundreds of pages of nothing good. I only read three books and about 200 pages of the fourth book. There may be a good story in there somewhere but haven't the time nor inclination to mine the petrified poo in which it is encased.

There is a reason why they have so many teachers of this class - position of the DADA teacher is cursed, so nobody is able to stay there for more than year. Also, there was only one teacher who actually turned to dark arts - Quirrell. As for the rest: Lockhart was simply stupid and ended incapacitated. Lupin was fired because public opinion learned about him being werewolf. Moody - well, Crouch impresonating him definitely was a Death Eater but Moody (who was actually hired) was a good guy. Umbridge was totally evil - no dark magic though. Snape - reformed. During 7th book Hogwart was occupied by Death Eaters so this year doesnt matter

I'm a professional reader so I read ~a book a day with some exceptions. Like right now I'm reading a school book and it will probably take me a week to finish it. Sometimes I read smaller books in between. I'm going to start with Marie Kondo. Not a series per se but she has 2 related books and I gave her a very long 2-star review on Amazon. She's inappropriate and thinks she's better than thou. Believe me, she's not. And my review will show why. Ann Omasta/Callie Love Man of the Month Club. Phoebe's apps doesn't work that well and the error is mostly human; if she wants to keep clients, she has to do things right. She has bad news every single month; I don't think it's fair for anyone. It's also unprofessional. All the ladies at the table never get their chance. It's mostly the last one in that gets the guy. I read 6/12. Autumn Macarthur Love in Store series. Maddie is supposed to be a "practicing" "devoted" Christian, and yet, she divorces her husband Brad because she's not happy. She's not happy because she expected things to happen, never shared them with Brad, and of course, they didn't happen. Then she takes the advise of someone she barely knows and divorces her husband who has no clue what happened. Then he goes after her and apparently the whole town knows "he didn't treat her well", except Brad doesn't know, who's the main one who should know. Don't you think? I read 2/9. Wendy H. Jones Cass Claymore Investigates. The end got me face-palming. During the story we are told many times that young Theo cannot sleep without his teddy bear and his mother and sister are not sleeping either because of that. Everyone is on the brink of going mad. When Cassandra finds the teddy, she has a choice of calling the mother to get the teddy so everyone can have a wink or go get a bite. Guess what she chose? The whole book is worst than the end. I read 1/1. Whitney Dineen/Melanie Summers An Accidentally in Love Story. Worse love stories ever. A lot of hidden abuse. I read 2/4. Jonas Jonasson The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out The Window And Disappeared and The Accidental Further Adventures of the Hundred-Year-Old Man. These were excellent books and I gave both a 5-star review. I thought it was over-the-top funny with unbelievable adventures, interesting politics and history bits. Funny, sad, awful, with fun name-dropping included but always entertaining. I'm going to finish off with Agatha Christie. I've read all her books in High School, now I'm going through them again because they appear on Prime. The editing is awful. Missing words, wrong words, etc., many repeats. Also, it's almost impossible to find the culprit so we get a full chapter to explain what happened. Those are not fun mysteries. I'm not sure I'm going to finish.

I like Dumbledore from Harry Potter. I know several potterheads loathe him but I think his actions were more or less justifiable. He gets a lot of hate for leaving Harry with the Dursleys but that was the only way Dumbledore could ensure that Lily's blood protection for Harry. Making sure he was alive to kill Voldemort in the future was the only way the wizarding world would be protected. He possibly couldn't have known that Voldemort would be regenerated much much later. And don't get me wrong I really feel bad for Harry and the fact that he had to grow up in a very abusive household but by doing so he ensured that Harry was safe and that there was a chance that he would defeat Voldemort and save the wizarding world.

That is not the main criticism that I have ever observed of Dumbledore. Most people that I have seen/spoken to state that they are much more angry at Dumbledore for playing the houses against each other, and lying to and manipulating Harry into getting purposely killed by Voldemort while knowing Harry had PTSD. I provide no personal opinion here, but leaving Harry with the Dursleys is much more understood by people than the other stuff done to Harry.

It's really funny and has a lot of the wit and sass that makes Percy Jackson amazing but it's also really fast paced! Definitely The New Moon wast the best from the whole series. I enjoyed that it wasn't so focused on the romance between Edward and Bella and parts with werewolves were entertaining and interesting. I also liked how it portrayed Bella's depression - that she was actually functioning in school and at home even though for everybody it was obvious that there's something wrong. We still live in a world where people think that every depression looks the same and it was refreshing to see someone portraying it another way. Shame that it was so shallowed in the movie.

I actually kind of liked how they translated the month pages to the movie... as far as what they could have done and given how much they cut/changed I was glad they kept it in. That feeling of looking outside and seeing the world going on with their lives while you are stuck in a cycle that you don't want to be in I can really relate to.

David Bramhall's "Greatest Cape" novels. Well written, but too long, too many characters with outlandish names, and the whole concept of the little isolated town with no name and virtually no contact with the outside world is slightly absurd. And what is it about the author and clergymen? Was he frightened by a vicar as a child, perhaps? And teachers, for that matter? ... still, I suppose we've all been threatened by a teacher at some time. His "Kitty" books are better.

Mary Shelley's Frankenstein has a great concept but the book itself really needed an editor. It almost feels like a joke how much pointless details are included in the story. You're introduced to a captain who is travelling across the artic, he's sending letters to his sister detailing his journey and eventually his encounter with Dr. Frankenstein who is chasing after a man or "Creature". This is all just been a framing device for Dr. Frankenstein to tell his story, the actual story of the book. There was no need for this captain and his sister, they hold no relevance. At one point Dr. Frankenstein is talking to the monster and who then takes over the narrative and is telling the doctor and us about the time he went to live next door to a family and was helping them by collecting wood and stuff. It's actually the best part of the book but you now have a guy explaining to his sister, about the time he met a doctor who told him about the time the monster he created lived in the woods. It's like inception or something. Also lots of pages are wasted talking about hills and trees. It's not a bad book, I mean it's still read 2 hundred years after it was written but like I side it could have benefitted with an editor.

In Shelley’s day there were no movies, no TV, no computers, no video games. Readers wanted to be entertained for hours or days, just like people today. They had much longer attention spans back then, and all those “pointless details” kept them engaged and happy.

I haven't read it in a while but just the thought of what Terry Goodkind did makes me want to cut out all the repetitive junk and have him sign that copy. Literally the first book the young child hero pretty much understands almost all his psychic powers by the end, by book 3 he's basically back to square one. But that backtracking seems to repeat every book until#15 (audiobook so I listened to them all). Learn a great ability, forgets by next book so he's not too powerful... again and again. HB is about transfem Harry (Rose) (yay) and IF is about Harry with PTSD and depression and Remus is a therapist and also Wolfstar raises Harry and anyway I need to shut up

Honestly, I think the Cursebreakers series (by Brigid Kemmerer) is awesome but I really hate Lia Mara for inexplicable reasons. Harper is awesome and she and Rhen are pretty cute together. In my opinion. Feel free to disagree. (HAHAHA that rhymes)

Percy Jackson was bad for Greek mythology.

Could you elaborate? Greek mythology is literally fictional, and it was passed down orally a lot before it was written down, so there have been probably hundreds of versions of each story. The Percy Jackson books aren't meant to contradict Greek mythology, but add a modern twist to the original myths. It's not completely accurate to mythology, but it didn't take anything away from it either, in my opinion.

I actually learned a lot from Percy Jackson about Greek mythology, and before I get told that I obviously didn't learn anything from a fantasy series... Percy Jackson inspired me to get books on mythology (the real versions), to research it, and learn a heck lot of it. I think Percy Jackson was bad if you read it alone and then thought that it was all accurate and everything, but if you keel reading about Greek Mythology and stuff it's good... ish. Does that make sense?

Little House on the Prairie. Contain(ed? s?) racist terms. (Note: Yes, I know it's outdated)

It's also based on the authors real life. Of course we consider it racist now.

They are period pieces, just like Huckleberry Finn.

This is a tricky one. On one hand, it’s really uncomfortable to read about racism. On the other hand, it’s representative of how white people really felt about Native Americans and not including it would be a disservice to Native Americans. When it comes to racism, I think it’s important for white people to experience that discomfort. As with all problematic art and banned art (and most things in general) the way forward is to talk about it and allow ourselves to recognize that sometimes terrible things happen or we might not personally like the way characters behave. Art is meant to spark conversation and emotion. Unfortunately, American society currently values outrage far more than thoughtful discourse (thanks, reality tv) and parents continue to avoid talking to their children about sensitive issues. (I say Americans because I can’t speak for other cultures.) And now I will hop off my soapbox. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to share my thoughts!

L.I. Wilder published the first books of the series in the 30s and they're based on her childhood which (obviously) took place even earlier, at the end of 19th century. Of course that the mentality and vocabulary will be different there than in modern works.

Where is the opinion? This is a statement of fact not an unpopular opinion. (I cannot speak of the veracityof the fact as i have not read it but that's irrelevant)

Hmm you make a good point Eliza. IDK I've just heard people defending the racism in it (incorrectly, not like the ppl in here!) i.e. "Well it's just In-juns hur hur hur"
