For me, it's patriotism. It started great, just being proud of your country. Now, it seems like it's evolved into "My country is the best. You can go f**k yourself since you're not from it."

The internet. In the beginning there was a belief that it would bring about the democratization of information - that with everyone having access to the world's knowledge it would lead to a smarter more advanced society. Nope instead peer reviewed research papers now have the same virtual weight as crackpot conspiracy theories while the anonymous formats brings out the worse in people and also allows nefarious actors to mass bot comment sections feeding the hate.
