Tough one. 1984 is up there. So is The Handmaids Tale. As the best author, the most consistently brilliant, is Sir Terry Pratchett's Discworld.

    radio silence (alice oseman), i will reread it over and over again. it's so well written and really made an impact on me. not an easy read but definitely a worthy one.
