It seems to have become a major trend on an increasing number of sites—including BP—to censor common words that aren't profanity, especially words related to violence or being unalived, to use the most absurd of euphemisms. Sometimes it takes a bit of effort to figure out what the word is. But the same sites have no problem about posting some pretty horrible and even gruesome photos, so the trend is confusing. What do you think? Is there any good justification for it?

I don't know, personally I think it's fücking ridiculous!!!! But it is fun finding loopholes in the algorithm.

The frustrating thing is BP have recently had a lot of medical articles, and common medical terms have been censored out, which puts some of the posts out of context. But my biggest bugbear has to do with death and dying - these are natural processes, and by avoiding discussing these subjects there is a real risk of causing long lasting trauma in people. This isn't an opinion, but proven through research. Finally, lets be fair, children are exposed to much worse content that a few swear words, or words that reference recreational pharmaceuticals, for example.

I'm teaching death to my 3 yo, because I'm familiar with these studies and it's important to show that death is part of life and we shouldn't be terrified of it but accept it as the price to be alive and have children.

The irony is that it brings more attention to the word. But it's such a waste of time to have to figure it out.

It drives me crazy. It was already ridiculous but it had gotten out of hand recently. Even very usual words that could have a 'certain meaning' are banned, this is plain annoying and stupid.

It's stupido. And it's not a trend in real life - just another example of worshiping add revenue & big corp on social media over you know - real life. It's dangerous when people stop talking about things with the real words with leaning behind them vs.made up words - as if we could use baby talk when talking about serious or bad things they are not as bad?

Yeah, it's stoopid. Like doing a word puzzle invented by a 10 year old boy. the algorithm needs to get its circuits out of the gutter.

But - what bugs me is Every single time I load BP - not even signing in I have to "manage my preferences" by clicking disagree 3 times and then Save. Anyone else run into this?

It's annoying. The word murder isn't gonna trigger someone. Censorship sucks.

I don't need to be parented by an algorithm. I'm all grown up now, and don't need to have anything censored.

The censors need to get over themselves.

Luckily I'm French, so my keyboard has à shîtload of accents to fûck with the algorithm. I can also use as many French swear words as I like, bordel de putain de merde! 😊

I am not a child, and I do NOT need to be fed censored words! PERIOD! As an adult, I am perfectly fine dealing with words and the meanings behind them. I do not want to be force-fed baby food words! Once again, for the folks in the back, I DO NOT WANT TO BE FORCE-FED BABY FOOD WORDS!

If Bored Panda cannot treat their readers like the adults we are, people will begin to float away to sites that don't censor half the words in a post. I think everybody here knows we don't have a majority of pre-teens visiting the site.

BP has censored so many dammed words that there are times you simply cannot figure out what someone was trying to say because all you see is a string of words like b*****d.

Ok, maybe - and that is MAYBE with capital - words like fůck, should be censored.
Buth what we see in past months in here is beyond ridiculous and on borderline Orwellian newspeak. Censoring common normal words, not offensive, a*****e or insulting is b******t.

See, I managed to sneak off word, but the st00pid algorithm censored one mildly vulgar word, but one totally normal. So first one is abus1v3, the next is boolsh1t.

Don't anybody go off half cocked. I was amused when I found out that the term "cold cocked" refers to the cold caulking that is driven into the seams of ships with a hammer. It's not that kind of c**k, it's not the other kind of c**k either. It's yet another kind.
